3. There is a tide in the affairs of men,
Which taken at the flood, leads on
to fortune. Omitted, all the voyage
of their life is bound in shallows and
in miseries. On such a full sea are
we now afloat. And we must take
the current when it serves, or lose
our ventures.
William Shakespeare

This presentation describes a journey of taking inspiration from wild places and adventure to re-imagine the way that we make change happen, on behalf of ourselves on nature
To make sure that we avoid a voyage bound in shallows and miseries, we need to take a radically different view of how we solve problems
I sit on the board of a national environmental organisation. We issue licenses to business that allow them to pollute our air and water. We don’t issue licenses to consumers, because they can do it for free. It’s OK
Part of our responsibility is to give our children and future generations the courage to face their challenges with confidence, and stay aware from the crippling effects of fear on creativity, energy and ability. Reminding ourselves of Helen Keller’s famous quote : “Security is mostly a superstition. It does not exist in nature, nor do the children of men as a whole experience it. Avoiding danger in the long run is no safer than outright exposure. Life is daring adventure, or nothing.
Wildlife populations down 50% in last 40 years
Hemp 75% less water than cotton
Cotton uses 2.5% of the world’s agricultural land, yet uses 16% of all insecticides and 6.8% of herbicides used worldwide
OPAL - £3m citizen science fund, with no intent to do anything about the information that it’s participants discover.
Let’s be reminded of the change that needs to happen by the broken things around us, and find ways of turning them into gifts for new ways of doing things – opportunities to remodel services, products and concepts.
Today, 86 percent of the world's population lives in countries that demand more from nature than their own ecosystems can renew.
