2. A typical Slasher movie usually
consists of a group of attractive
teenagers being preyed on by a
masked serial killer, with his motive
usually being revenge and his
weapon of choice always being
something metal and sharp to inflict
incredibly gory injuries. At the end of
the movie there is always one
survivor, and the serial killer is always
either dead or no where to be
seen, leaving the survivor as the main
suspect in the inevitable sequel which
always welcomes the return of the
original killer, or an imitator willing to
carry on his „work‟.
Being a sub-genre of Horror, it was
first introduced with Alfred Hitchcocks‟
1960 hit Psycho, but Slasher movies
first become popular in the late 70‟s
and early 80‟s with the arrival of the
iconic movies: Halloween, Friday the
13th and A Nightmare on Elm Street.
The sub-genre was reborn in the mid
90‟s with the arrival of the first of the
Scream franchise in 1996.
3. This is the movie that
introduces a new level of
Psycho 1960
violence, gore and Alfred Hitchcock
sexuality, which are all
essential parts of the typical
Slasher genre. Psycho went on
to influence later creations
which followed the typical story
lines.
The iconic shower scene from
the movie is the main scene
that tells us it‟s a Slasher
movie: attractive young woman
brutally killed by a shadowy
“masked” villain with a sharp
object.
