1. Research evaluation
From the research I’ve reached a much clearer understanding of the codes and conventions of the
genre of music magazine I want create myself. I’ve also realised what genre of music magazine I also
want to create as beforehand I wasn’t too sure myself of what I wanted to focus on whether to
make a more mainstream magazine that will appeal to a much wider audience or a niche market. As
you can from my work later on I have decided to focus on a more niche market and taken a lot of
ideas from kerrang.
From the front cover I have realised to make it very gritty and have lots of cover lines and flashes
that pull in the audience also mentioning what bands are include are a very main part of a front
cover and it gives quick snippet as what’s In inside and the audience look for what bands are inside
that they like rather than the topic the dps is on. I will use in my own front cover by having plus
areas where I just name artists inside of magazine and I will also have a lot of flashes and boxes
which cover lines in to attract the audience and make the magazine look more realistic.
With the contents analysis I have realised there is more to it rather than just telling the audience
what inside the magazine. I have seen how a lot of the magazines have editor’s notes on the
contents page this is usually a very fun little insight into how the creators of magazine felt about
making this particular issue. I will now include an editor’s note of my own and when doing this I
ensure it is to very down to earth and it makes the reader laugh and feel at comfort when reading
the magazine.
Form the double page spread analysis I have realised that a lot of the features on the double page
spread are the pictures rather than the text and the more interesting the photos are according the
focus group the more intrigued they are to read the text on the page. They say the more visually
appealing the page is the more readers you get. This has taught that when I am to make my own
double page spread they I should con-pact it up with writing and to make it look interesting and
creative to make the audience want to read it and make the audience not just flick past it in the
magazine. Although I suppose this goes for the whole magazine as if it doesn’t look interesting the
reader then nobody would want to buy it. As I have thought myself if you walked past a magazine in
a shop where it was very plain and boring a bit of text on the front nobody would want to buy it. You
also want attractive looking people on the cover to give it a sexual appeal as well even though this is
by far not the aim and selling point of the magazine.
