• Football derbies in Europe are the most decorated and passionate
football(soccer) games played in their continent. Their origins vary
from political disputes, tragedy, historical backgrounds, religion
and even money. To be considered a “derby” the two teams must
reside in the same city.
3. Derby de Lisboa
• This is a Portuguese Derby
between Sporting Lisbon and
Benefica
• Both teams are Portugal’s top
ranking teams having won 32
and 18 titles.
• The rivalry is a basic division
between the poor(Benefica)
and rich(Lisbon) of Portugal.
4. Revierderby
• Longstanding rivalry in
Germany; FC Schalke and
Borussia Dortmund
• One of few rivalries that does
not involve politics.
• Derby famous for atmosphere
in stadiums from fans.
5. El Derbi madrileño
• An intensified derby between
Atletico Madrid and Real
Madrid
• Derby began to get tense
because Atletico in the 70’s
brought in foreign players.
• Real Madrid is politically
backed by the Spanish capital
while Atletico has rebellious
fans
6. Battle of Moscow
• Spartak Moscow and CSKA
Moscow have passionate fan
bases. The two have won 21
and 19 league titles.
• Spartak is called the
“People’s Team” wheras CSKA
are the “Militarians.
• The two sides have political
differences and atmospheres
become violent.
7. Derby della Madonnina
One of the biggest derbies in
world. Between AC Milan and
Inter Milan
Once a whole club but
separated because Milan did
not want to use foreigners.
Both sides have met in many
competitions and competed for
trophies and titles.
Both teams share one stadium.
8. Derby della Capitale
• This is one of the most violent
derbies in Europe.
• Lazio vs Roma games always
turn out violent.
• Fans have died and riots
almost always ignite. Derby is
strictly political.
• 2004 the derby was cancelled
as 13 arrests and 170 injuries
resulted.
9. Turkish Rivalry
• In Istanbul, Turkey the match
between Galatasaray and
Fenerbahce gets extremely
violent. Flares will be thrown
everywhere, fights break out.
• Fenerbahce is considered the
“People’s club” as they
represent the working class
• Galatasaray represents the
aristocrats.
10. Catholics vs Protestents
• Celtic vs Rangers is all about
religion and ancestry.
• Celtic Have Irish roots and
Catholic people.
• Rangers have Scottish roots
and are Protestant.
• Both teams are extremely
successful in their league and
always fight for titles and
trophies.
