2. The Content
There are several reasons as to why my magazine will suceed. Firstly, the
content. Although this is explained in more detail in the ‘content’ section
of my proposal, I feel this is very significant in the selling value of my
magazine, as generally people buy a magazine due to the content. The
features of the magazine, although they may not be completely
original, will be different to that seen in any other magazine on the
market. Currently, NME has a section devoted to undiscovered talent, and
informs the reader of this band. In the case of my magazine however, it
will also include an interview with a member of the band .This will be one
of two interviews in each magazine, one with a well recognised artist, and
one with this unknown artist. This interview will also be the feature seen
on the double page spread that I will be creating.
3. The Audience
Another reason why my magazine will be a success is due
to the audience that it will attract. Although there is
quite a large market of rock/indie magazines
currently, on the market, I think my magazine will be
seen differently. NME tends to focus on well known
bands that everyone knows about. The main focus of
my magazine will be to help people discover unknown
talent. This will uncover a huge new audience, because
of the originality of the concept. This USP allows for my
magazine to differ itself, from the huge competition
that features in the rock/indie genre of magazines.
4. The Look/Feel
In the build-up to the creation of my magazine, I have compiled a list
of research that will help me in creating the ‘perfect’ magazine.
Information such as researching the key concepts of my magazine
(Including Representation, Institution Etc), and a survey completed
by readers of music magazines, will all be useful when creating my
magazine. I have built my magazine around this research compiled
before its creation. For example, in my survey, I discovered that a
mixture of dark and bright colours appeal to most readers, so this is
the colour scheme I shall aim for. I also learnt that people much
prefer interviews rather than reviews or straight up articles, so this,
again will be a main feature in my magazine. Instead of creating the
magazine I think will work, I have taken my own ideas, and the
ideas of the reader, to create the best magazine possible.
5. Competition
NME – Possibly the most popular of all rock/indie magazines. NME has become the forefront of
music magazines. Features include ‘Track of the Week’ and an interview with an A-List music
star. Although this magazine will prove to be competition for my magazine, some people may
prefer my magazine, due to the focus on new up and coming talent, as opposed to well
known talent.
Q – Another well known rock/indie magazine. It is often seen as being in the shadow of NME.
Includes many of the same features, but has more of a focus on older bands, as opposed to
bands of today. This again shows a gap in the market, allowing my magazine to make the
most of this gap.
Kerrang! – May compete with my magazine in some ways. This magazine tends to feature more
metal music, as opposed to indie, however there are some crossovers. This magazine has
many loyal fans, due to the huge following it has gained due to its individuality of metal
following.
Mojo – Another magazine that may not be a close contender with my magazine. It is much less
well known compared to the 3 featured above, but includes a wide range of genres, including
even some pop genres. However, this magazine hasn't become popular enough to become
one of the more well known magazines in the industry, and as such will not be a major
competition for my magazine
