3. Atherosclerosis Atherosclerosis is a condition in which a type of plaque is collected on the walls of arteries. It occurs when a large amount of fat, cholesterol, and other substances build up in the walls of the arteries. When plaque builds up, it can slow or block of the flow of blood through the artery and can cause damage to the organs, coronary heart disease, heart attack, stroke, loss of blood to limbs, Angina Pectoris, or a pulmonary embolism.
