2. Director
• The person who is ultimately responsible for the creative
vision and style of the film.
• The director works closely with the cast and crew and also
has a major role in post-production.
• Traditionally, the director has complete control ‘on the
floor’ and if they are well known his/her name and image
are used to promote the film alongside the stars of the film.
• Some directors are known to also star in
the films that they’re directing. For
example, Clint Eastwood and Mel Gibson.

3. Cinematographer/Director of
Photography
• The cinematographer is responsible for discovering the
style of screenplay using source material such as
paintings, photographs and other films.
• In large productions the cinematographer would direct
and work closely with the camera operators, but in
smaller productions the cinematographer and camera
operator can be the same person.
• The cinematographer may be involved with/work
closely with Production Design,
Costume Design, Lighting and Hair
and Make-Up Department.

4. Editor
• Editors work closely with Directors before shooting
actually begins (they are one of the key Head of
Department’s).
• At the start of production, Editor’s work in the cutting
room looking at the previous day’s footage.
• During production, they check the technical standards,
the storyline and the actors’ performances.
• During the post production period, the director works
closely with the Editor refining the
film, which has to be approved by
the Producer.

5. Production Designer
• Production Designers are major Head’s of Department
and are in control of the entire Art Department.
• The are largely responsible for realising the Director’s
vision and the visual requirements for the film.
• After a breakdown of the script, the Director meets
with the Production Designer to discuss how best to
shoot the film.
• Production Designers then deliver their sketches to the
Art Directors who oversee the production of technical
drawings and models which are then Ken Adams
used by the Construction Department
to build the sets and source locations.

6. Sound Designer/Sound Department
• Sound Designers are responsible for providing any
required sounds to accompany.
• The first task is to identify the three main kinds of
sound effects required; spot effects, atmosphere
effects and sound design effects. Once this is done, the
Sound Designer has to source different kind of sounds
and also record new material.
• When sounds have been chosen/created they are often
enhanced and distorted to
create a new sound that is different
and interesting – a highly creative
and experimental period.
