This presentation will offer insight into certification testing and the role it plays in the anti-malware industry. Certification testing offers benefits to the customer and we will examine those
benefits. For the antimalware vendor certification testing provides a critical role in assessing the efficacy of a product. After the presentation you will have the opportunity to ask questions
about certification testing.

As more and more of our lives are lived online, cyber criminals are increasingly attracted to the
worldwide shopping and communication platform provided by the Internet.

The average computer user does not have the skills to determine the effectiveness
of a anti-malware product.
By reading the reviews and test reports of third-party independent testers the consumer
can determine how well the product fits into their computing environment
7. CERTIFICATION – BENEFITS TO BUSINESSES
Business usually don’t have the people, skills or training to evaluate security products
Relying on third-party independent testing is a way to overcome the skills gap
Results from multiple test can provide an insight into how the product will fit and perform in the
corporate network and end-user environments

G DATA Security Summit 2015
Welcome to the G DATA Security Summit
My name is Andy Hayter and I am a Security Evangelist for G DATA located in the US.
This session we will discuss Certification Testing and the role it plays in the Anti-Malware Industry.
Here is our Agenda

Q & A
What is Certification Testing
Certification testing is the process of evaluating an anti-malware product to determine how effective it is at protecting the user.
Effectiveness also know as efficacy is determined in a couple of ways. Testers will run the product against a know set of malware, typically the “In-the-Wild” set and / or they test against real-time threats.
Generally performed by third-party independent testing labs other features of the products can be tested. Among those are:
Performance – how fast the scan is
Usability – how easy is it to navigate the user interface
Disinfecting – does the product completely remove the malware rendering it harmless
Who Performs Certification Testing
Companies all around the world perform anti-malware testing and certification. This graphic represents some of the companies involved in certification testing.
Organizations such as AMTSO offer guidelines and objective standards and best practices for testing anti-malware products.
AMTSO publishes Testing Guidelines. G DATA is a member of AMTSO and actively participated in the development of these guidelines.
Certification – Benefits to the Consumer
The average computer user does not have the skills to determine the effectiveness of a anti-malware product.
Proper testing provides independent third-party advice on the quality of the anti-malware product and how well it fits into their computing environment
Certification – Benefits to Businesses
Business usually don’t have the people, skills or training to evaluate security products
Relying on third-party independent testing is a way to overcome the skills gap
Results from multiple test can provide an insight into how the product will fit and perform in the corporate network and end-user environments
Certification - The benefits to the vendor
Certification – Benefits to the Anti-Malware Vendor
Certification testing benefits the vendor in many ways. It provides third party validation of many features of the product.
Most test are conducted on specific operating systems. A test can determine compatibility issues with the operating system.
Next detection testing either with a know set of malware or real-time threats provides the vendor with valuable feedback on how well its detection capabilities are.
Performance testing provides valuable information on what and how to tune the product for optimal performance.
Usability testing will suggest ways in which to change the user interface to make it more friendly and informative allowing the end-user to make the correct decisions about malware issues.
Disinfection testing, although not many certification testing organizations perform this test, provides feedback on how well the anti-malware product cleans or sanitizes malware to allow the user to continue to use their computer.
Summary
Certification testing is very useful in determining how well a anti-malware product functions
Consumers can read the results of testing to decide which product they will use
