Click here to view that handout. attach below To carefully read the assignment instructions for Daily Writing 2.1, click here. attach below DUE OCTOBER 17 Discussion 2 Daily Writing 2.2 DUE OCTOBER 19 Draft a persuasive essay that uses a minimum of 300 words and at least three paragraphs that argue for or against the thesis below. Thesis: Alabama (or wherever you reside) should ban sales and other distribution of all firearms except for those required by employment. Agree or disagree C D with the above opinion, but take a clear, logical stand on the issue. Before forming your own thesis, click here to read “A Word about the Thesis” posted in “Handouts and Course Documents.” attach below When forming the thesis (argument, opinion), recall that a good opinion is always supported by facts. Write the essay from the first-person point of view of a law enforcement officer, the first-person point of view of a wildlife hunter, the first-person point of view of an anti-gun proponent who despises freedom and the Second Amendment to our beloved Constitution, or the first-person point of view of a convicted felon who possesses several automatic weapons, all of which have been illegally obtained. Just a reminder for anyone who needs it: When writing from the first-person point of view of a law enforcement officer, the voice in your entire essay must be the voice of a law enforcement officer (or hunter, or anti-gun person, or convicted felon), and the voice must be especially strong in the introductory and concluding paragraphs. Do not write about the voice, be the voice. Write from only one point of view, not all four. The language in assignments that require writing from a particular point of view must conform to the “Checklist for Essays and Other Writing Assignments.” For example, a dirty rotten scoundrel would probably use some unsavory language filled with inappropriate expletives, but if an English Composition student were writing from the point of view of a dirty rotten scoundrel, the voice must be that of a dirty rotten scoundrel, but the writing (usage, grammar, language mechanics) must be suitable for English Composition classroom expectations. For additional help with point of view, click here. attach below Underline the thesis in the first paragraph of the essay. In the text of the essay and on a Works Cited page, use and cite the source below and one other online source (MLA format style) that supports your thesis. The textbook and Blackboard are not outside sources. Click here for the Lagman source. attach below Two sources are required. Make sure that the text of your essay includes the in-text citations for the Lagman source and the other credible online source of your choice. Developing a clear and concise thesis statement (an argument) in response to the following question: Does the lm have the power to transform political sensibilities? 2. Writing an outline for a ve paragraph analytical essay building on a clear and concise thesis statement, including topic sentences and secondary supports. 3. Identifying and explaining three scenes from the lm text in support of the thesis statement/argument. 4. Writing an introductory paragraph for the outlined analytical essay Be sure to read thoroughly the writing conventions below before beginning this assignment. Note: You are NOT writing a full essay; rather, you are outlining an analytical essay by completing the dialogue boxes below. Writing a Critical Review (analytical) Essay 2020/3/8 Critical Review #1 - WebCOM™ 2.0 https://smc.grtep.com/index.cfm/smcc/page/1criticalreviews 2/10 1. Every essay that you write for this course must have a clear thesis, placed (perhaps) somewhere near the end of the introductory paragraph. Simply stated, a THESIS (or ARGUMENT) expresses, preferably in a single sentence, the point you want to make about the text that is the subject of your essay. A THESIS should be an opinion or interpretation of the text, not merely a fact or observation. The best possible THESIS will answer some specic questions about the text. Very often the THESIS contains an outline of the major points to be covered in the essay. A possible thesis for an essay on character in Perry Henzell’s The Harder They Come might read somewhat as follows: The protagonist of THTC is not a hero in the epic sense of the word, but a self-centered young man bred of economic oppression and cultural dependency. The characters in this lm have no real psychological depth, but are markers for a society of consumption and momentary glory. (You might then go on to exemplify from the text and argue in favor or against this interpretation: your essay need not hold to only one perspective.) What single, clear QUESTION does the above THESIS attempt to answer? 2. Each essay should be organized into ve (5) paragraphs, each based on one of two to four major ideas, which will comprise the BODY of the essay. Each paragraph must have a topic sentence, often (but not always) towards the beginning of the paragraph, which clearly states the ARGUMENT or point to be made in the paragraph. Following the thesis set forth above, the rst pa.

1 Interview Research Paper Since our interview essay centers around an older person and their experience (either indirect or direct) of the civil rights movements, you’ll have a chance to research some of the events Coates’ mentions in his book. Timeline Ø Choose interviewee and schedule interview (today)_______________________ Ø Conduct and record interview (this week)_______________________ Ø Transcribe interview (this week/weekend) _______________________ Ø Begin writing your interview essay by Sunday evening)_______________________ Ø Turn in a rough draft of your interview essay for peer-review _______________________ Ø Final draft of your interview essay due in 2 weeks _______________________ Steps to Write Your Interview Research Paper This essay has multiple parts, and you’ll have a better experience writing the essay if you plan ahead. Follow these steps to manage the interview and writing process. Step 1: Choose your interviewee and schedule your interview. Since you’re interviewing someone about what they remember of the 60s and 70s, you might want to ask them to briefly describe that they remember when you first ask to interview them. This will guide you in setting your interview questions. You’ll ask someone who had experiences through the media different questions than a person who was at a school that receiving bused children or even someone who actively participated in movements. You’ll interview an older adult who has experienced the civil rights movement and the radical movements in the 70s. Your interviewee does not need direct experience in any of these movements; they just need to have been in the US during these times and have had some exposure to the movements either through the media like TV and radio, personal experiences such as busing, or direct participation. Potential interviewees might be grandparents, older family friends, people in social organizations you frequent, or professional colleagues. If you don’t know anyone who lived during the 60s and 70s, contact me. Step 2: Develop interview questions. 2 During your interview, you want to ask open-ended questions that encourage your interviewee to share. An example of an open-ended question is “What has happening in your life during the Birmingham bombing of 1963, and what did your family think about them?” Your questions should encourage longer answers that draw out memories and personal experiences related to the events during the 60s and 70s. Adjust your questions depending on how familiar your interviewee was with the events during the 60s and 70s. This goes without saying, but Use the themes that come up during our theme discussion forums or that interest you from BTWAM as a guide for developing your questions. In an interview, you are in the driver’s seat, so it’s best to direct your interviewee by developing questions about topics you have already researched. Step 3: Conduct your interview, and ...

1 Writing and Formatting ENGL 2113 Essays Overview Each essay (W3, W4, and W4) should be approximately 750 words in length and include the following: A title, which reflects both the topic and your thesis Four (and only four) paragraphs: o an introductory paragraph that ends with an underlined thesis statement o two body/support paragraphs that begin with an underlined topic sentence o a concluding paragraph At least two authoritative, credible online sources of support, which are cited in the text and included on a Works Cited or Reference page. The sources must be correctly formatted using either MLA or APA style. Follow these steps to format and save your essay: Set margins at 1 inch • Set line spacing at either 1.5 or 2 • Insert a header with your last name and page number aligned to the right • In the body of the first page, aligned to the left, include: o your full name o instructor’s name o ENGL 2113 (your section number) o date • Include a title for the essay, one that reflects the topic and your thesis • Save the document as a Word document • Name the file YourLastName Assignment # (for example, Smith W3) Follow these seven steps to write, submit, and review feedback on your essay: 1. Read the Essay Grading Guidelines document If you don’t meet these criteria, you will lose points. 2. Read the assigned essay prompts Each essay prompt will be posted to D2L. 3. Outline your argument Before writing your essay, write out your thesis and the topic sentences you plan to use to defend that thesis. You will submit these three sentences for the W1 assignment. You will not turn in the 2 these statements separately for the other essay assignments; however, you would be wise to write them out before you write each essay: Thesis: In one sentence, state your opinion, or your stand, on the assigned topic. Topic/reason sentence one: In one sentence, state one reason WHY the reader should accept your opinion. Topic/reason sentence two: In one sentence, state a second reason WHY the reader should accept your argument. Reminder: A topic/reason sentence has two jobs: to serve as a reason in support of your thesis, and to announce which reason will be discussed and supported in the body paragraph that follows. Again, each topic sentence should be a reason in support of your thesis, not simply an introduction to the paragraph. 4. Write your paragraphs Paragraph one: an introductory paragraph. Assume that the reader of your essay does not know the assignment topic. First introduce the reader to the topic of the essay. Do not start the introductory paragraph with your thesis. End the paragraph with your thesis. Underline the thesis statement. Paragraph two: a body or support paragraph that is 7-10 sentences in length. Begin this body paragraph with your first topic/reason sentence. Underline the topic sentence. Devote the e ...

In BC’s nearly-decade-old “new” curriculum, the curricular competencies describe the processes that students are expected to develop in areas of learning such as mathematics. They reflect the “Do” in the “Know-Do-Understand” model. Under the “Communicating” header falls the curricular competency “Explain and justify mathematical ideas and decisions.” Note that it contains two processes: “Explain mathematical ideas” and “Justify mathematical decisions.” I have broken it down into its separate parts in order to understand--or reveal--its meaning. The first part is commonplace in classrooms. By now, BC math teachers—and students—understand that “Explain mathematical ideas” means more than “Show your work.” Teachers consistently ask “What did you do?” and “How do you know?” This process is about retelling, not just of steps but of thinking. The second part happens less frequently. Think back to the last time that you observed a student make—a necessary precursor to justify—a mathematical decision. “Justify” is about defending. Like “explain,” it involves reasoning; unlike “explain,” it also involves opinion and debate. In order to reinterpret the curricular competency “Explain and justify mathematical ideas and decisions,” I will continue to take apart its constituent part “Justify mathematical decisions” and carefully examine the term “mathematical decisions.” What, exactly, is a “mathematical decision”? Below, I will categorize answers to this question. These categories, and the provided examples, may help to suggest new opportunities for students to justify.
