Corporate Training for the Management Team
OBJECTIVES:
The objectives of the CBI are to enhance the business and behavioral knowledge, skills, and
abilities of the management team. The objectives are to be accomplished by identifying
development needs and providing core and elective courses for supervisors, middle managers and
executives.

Process for Identifying CBI Core Courses and Electives:
1. On-going needs-assessment by addressing deficiencies, development, changes)
2. All management levels, areas and disciplines have a role with responsibilities and
   accountability.
3. Redundancies and related topics were grouped.
4. Fifty-five topics were identified and grouped into six categories of training needs.
5. Five of the categories were determined to be core management courses and the sixth to be
   elective.
       Organization and Business (Priority One)
       Finance (Priority Two)
       Company Policies (Priority Three)
       Regulatory Compliance (Priority Four)
       Leadership (Priority Five)
       Information Technology (elective)
6. The priority of the courses was determined using the number of areas identifying the need
and the number of management levels identifying the need (Attachment One).
7. Course descriptions were drafted, Class Time was estimated, and Content Experts were
   identified (Attachment Two).
8. Recommendations were developed for training strategy and tactics (below).

STRATEGY:
To assess, and address, the developmental needs of the management team on an annual basis.

TACTICS:
Supervisors are required to complete all of the core courses within eighteen months of hire date in
the order of established corporate training priority. Certificates of Completion will be awarded.
Electives are decided in the development-planning phase of the corporate Performance
Management Process.

Middle Managers are required to complete the priority one through four core courses within
twelve months of hire date. Certificates of Completion will be awarded. Other core courses and
electives are decided in the development-planning phase of the corporate Performance
Management Process.

Executives are required to complete the priority one and priority two core courses within twelve
months of hire date. Other core courses and electives are decided in the development-planning
phase of the corporate Performance Management Process.

The order and schedule of the CBI core courses is established by corporate priorities.

The schedule for the CBI electives is determined by need.

                                                                                              Page 2
                                                                                            10/13/09
TARGET AUDIENCE:
Vice Presidents, Directors, Managers, and Supervisors.

IMPLEMENTATION PLAN:
• The courses are provided according to a final schedule endorsed by the Executive Operating
Committee. Rationale: Training with the evident direction, support, and involvement of the
senior management team gets the commitment of resources to promote a learning
    environment.

• Each course is highly interactive and communicates:
     What you’ll know
 What you’ll be able to do
     What to do next

• Knowledge and skill demonstrations are incorporated into the course design to reinforce
learning and applying the critical content of each course.

• The business area provides course content and qualified instructors (Finance for Finance,
Human Resources and Corporate Affairs for Corporate Policies, etc.). Rationale – This
approach supports distributed responsibility and accountability for the design, development,
delivery, and documentation management of training.

• The Manager - Training Operations provides direction and support as an internal consultant
to the business areas/content experts on course design, development, and delivery.

• Training Operations provides logistical support including scheduling, registration, training
and course materials, equipment, and training rooms.

• All trainers are certified by the business area and Executive Operating Committee as “content
qualified” and encouraged to become certified in Advanced Instructional Techniques (the art
    of facilitating adult learning).

• Completion of the core courses is mandatory to receive certificates of completion. Exclusion
from core courses is an option that can only be considered by the area manager, the Manager-
Training Operations, and the Vice President of Human Resources and Corporate Affairs.
Exclusion is decided collectively on a case-by-case basis.

• “Refresher” training is an option based on developmental needs.

• Management training is part of the performance management process as defined in the
Performance Management Plans. Rationale: Performance standards revised to incorporate
new learning and skills enhancements provide a corporate mechanism to link compensation
to commitment and support for organizational and personal change.

Corporate Training For The Management Team

  • 1. Corporate Training for the Management Team Adapted from earlier work by Mitchell W. Manning Sr. for use as an example by business and industry Mitchell W. Manning Sr. MitchellWManning@aol.com Page1 10/13/09
  • 2. Corporate Training for the Management Team OBJECTIVES: The objectives of the CBI are to enhance the business and behavioral knowledge, skills, and abilities of the management team. The objectives are to be accomplished by identifying development needs and providing core and elective courses for supervisors, middle managers and executives. Process for Identifying CBI Core Courses and Electives: 1. On-going needs-assessment by addressing deficiencies, development, changes) 2. All management levels, areas and disciplines have a role with responsibilities and accountability. 3. Redundancies and related topics were grouped. 4. Fifty-five topics were identified and grouped into six categories of training needs. 5. Five of the categories were determined to be core management courses and the sixth to be elective. Organization and Business (Priority One) Finance (Priority Two) Company Policies (Priority Three) Regulatory Compliance (Priority Four) Leadership (Priority Five) Information Technology (elective) 6. The priority of the courses was determined using the number of areas identifying the need and the number of management levels identifying the need (Attachment One). 7. Course descriptions were drafted, Class Time was estimated, and Content Experts were identified (Attachment Two). 8. Recommendations were developed for training strategy and tactics (below). STRATEGY: To assess, and address, the developmental needs of the management team on an annual basis. TACTICS: Supervisors are required to complete all of the core courses within eighteen months of hire date in the order of established corporate training priority. Certificates of Completion will be awarded. Electives are decided in the development-planning phase of the corporate Performance Management Process. Middle Managers are required to complete the priority one through four core courses within twelve months of hire date. Certificates of Completion will be awarded. Other core courses and electives are decided in the development-planning phase of the corporate Performance Management Process. Executives are required to complete the priority one and priority two core courses within twelve months of hire date. Other core courses and electives are decided in the development-planning phase of the corporate Performance Management Process. The order and schedule of the CBI core courses is established by corporate priorities. The schedule for the CBI electives is determined by need. Page 2 10/13/09
  • 3. TARGET AUDIENCE: Vice Presidents, Directors, Managers, and Supervisors. IMPLEMENTATION PLAN: • The courses are provided according to a final schedule endorsed by the Executive Operating Committee. Rationale: Training with the evident direction, support, and involvement of the senior management team gets the commitment of resources to promote a learning environment. • Each course is highly interactive and communicates:  What you’ll know  What you’ll be able to do  What to do next • Knowledge and skill demonstrations are incorporated into the course design to reinforce learning and applying the critical content of each course. • The business area provides course content and qualified instructors (Finance for Finance, Human Resources and Corporate Affairs for Corporate Policies, etc.). Rationale – This approach supports distributed responsibility and accountability for the design, development, delivery, and documentation management of training. • The Manager - Training Operations provides direction and support as an internal consultant to the business areas/content experts on course design, development, and delivery. • Training Operations provides logistical support including scheduling, registration, training and course materials, equipment, and training rooms. • All trainers are certified by the business area and Executive Operating Committee as “content qualified” and encouraged to become certified in Advanced Instructional Techniques (the art of facilitating adult learning). • Completion of the core courses is mandatory to receive certificates of completion. Exclusion from core courses is an option that can only be considered by the area manager, the Manager- Training Operations, and the Vice President of Human Resources and Corporate Affairs. Exclusion is decided collectively on a case-by-case basis. • “Refresher” training is an option based on developmental needs. • Management training is part of the performance management process as defined in the Performance Management Plans. Rationale: Performance standards revised to incorporate new learning and skills enhancements provide a corporate mechanism to link compensation to commitment and support for organizational and personal change.
