CIRCULAR NO. 25
13 August 2015
Dear Parent(s) / Guardian(s)
“THE WHOLE PURPOSE OF EDUCATION
IS TO TURN MIRRORS INTO WINDOWS.”
Sydney J. Harris
The school production ‘Deadly Devious Domestication’ took place this week and Mr Basson will
tell us about the highs of this brilliant show, supported with some great action photos, in next
week’s circular.
1) ACADEMICS
Our current academic focus rests with the grade 12’s who have two school weeks remaining before
they commence their Trial examinations. As always, we encourage them to make every effort in
their preparation for these exams.
Our weekly tests continue as indicated below. Parents of pupils in grades 8 and 9 are reminded of
the ANA assessments that will be written from 15 - 18 September.
2) LATE COLLECTION OF PUPILS
It is a major concern of ours that some parents do not collect their children in good time from school
after functions and in the afternoons at the end of the school day.
Safety of our pupils is of paramount importance and we ask those parents referred to here, to please
be on time for the collection of their children.

PLEASE NOTE!
All pupils are required to be at school at the regular time - 07h55 - even if they are not writing a test.
This time will be used for consolidation or tasks organized by various subject departments.
All parents are asked to please be aware that when your child misses a Monday or a Thursday test,
a relevant chemist slip (the date on the slip must pertain to the pupil’s absenteeism and medication
bought), a certificate from the clinic or a doctor’s certificate is required. A medical certificate from
either the clinic or the doctor is applicable for missing any exam. A note from you excusing your
child from school for the days missed is also required.
Grade 9 and Matric pupils must produce a doctor’s certificate for tests and exams missed as these
are the two exit phases and their marks are externally moderated by the Education Department.
Learners are not allowed to go home immediately after a test if they are ill. They have to stay until
first break. If they are ill, then they should not come to school. A doctor’s certificate will be required.

8) EMMA SADLEIR
EMMA SADLEIR IS VISITING FAIRMONT HIGH SCHOOL!!
A TALK THAT NO PARENT CAN AFFORD TO MISS
We are looking forward to a visit from Emma Sadleir to Fairmont on Wednesday, 19 August. She
will be talking to our learners during a special assembly period on Wednesday morning, and to
parents and other interested parties at 19h00 the same evening.
Fairmont is doing this as a service to the community; there will therefore be no entrance fee and it
will be open to all parents. Please come and bring your friends along.
Her talk will be only one hour long and she will allow questions afterwards.
Emma's areas of expertise include all aspects of print and electronic media law, with a particular
focus on defamation, privacy and social media law. She is an admitted attorney and has a BA LLB
(with distinction) from the University of Witwatersrand, and an LLM in Information Technology, Media
and Communications Law (with distinction) from the London School of Economics, having been
awarded a scholarship from the Oppenheimer Memorial Trust. She worked in the media litigation
department of Webber Wentzel for five years before going on her own to specialise in social media
law in April 2013. Much of her work involves creating social media strategies and policies for
corporates and schools, drafting social media agency agreements and providing training and
workshops on social media law. She also teaches media law to journalists and lawyers, and lectures
personal reputation management on various MBA programmes.
Please see the flyer beneath for more information.

10) FAIRMONT FOUNDERS DAY 2015
To all fellow Monties, past and present, on Saturday, 5 September 2015 we will be celebrating
Fairmont Founders Day 2015 with a full programme of Sport Events and family friendly
activities.
The full programme will be sent out closer to the Event, but in summary the following games
have been scheduled:
 3 past pupil’s Men’s Hockey on Astro, starting at 08h30.
 1 past pupil’s Ladies Hockey on Astro
 1 past pupil’s Men’s Soccer
 1 past pupil’s Ladies Soccer
 1 past pupil’s Ladies Netball
 2 or 3 past pupil’s Rugby
There will be a jumping castle for the kids with adult supervision and assistance from current
Fairmont pupils.
Food and beverages will be available (complimentary toasted sandwiches), and Cafe Monty
will be open for the event.
No alcohol may be sold on the premises, but you are welcome to bring your own alcoholic
beverages in a cooler box.
Mr Dingley, Fairmont’s Principal, is hoping to showcase the Aquatic Centre (still under
construction) on an informal basis as it is currently a Construction Site and may not be safe to
arrange a viewing of the Complex.
If the weather is inclement, the jumping castle will be moved indoors and the sport will go
ahead as planned.
There are no costs involved in the abovementioned Founders Day Event.
Many thanks

Rugby Team Report vs Bosmansdam (08-08-2015)
With the necessary preparation of the past week, our boys were so ready for their game against
Bosmansdam and everybody was looking forward to a spectacular game.
At the warm up session, the boys started to switch on and one felt there was a sense of pride and
determination about was expected from them.
The game got underway in awesome conditions with Jacques Gericke leading the team onto the
field for his 50th
game. What a great achievement!
Both teams were prepared to throw the ball around and many chances were created by both sides;
however good defence by Fairmont prevented Bosmansdam from scoring.
The game was played at a good pace, eventually giving way for Patrick Stevens to score twice - in
the first and second half.
Both Fairmont and Bosmansdam’s 1st
Teams can be commended for their efforts and spirit in which
the game was played, and the winner on the day was rugby.
Jacques Gericke was named our Man of the Match.

Fairmont Focus 25: 13 August 2015

  • 1. CIRCULAR NO. 25 13 August 2015 Dear Parent(s) / Guardian(s) “THE WHOLE PURPOSE OF EDUCATION IS TO TURN MIRRORS INTO WINDOWS.” Sydney J. Harris The school production ‘Deadly Devious Domestication’ took place this week and Mr Basson will tell us about the highs of this brilliant show, supported with some great action photos, in next week’s circular.
  • 2. 1) ACADEMICS Our current academic focus rests with the grade 12’s who have two school weeks remaining before they commence their Trial examinations. As always, we encourage them to make every effort in their preparation for these exams. Our weekly tests continue as indicated below. Parents of pupils in grades 8 and 9 are reminded of the ANA assessments that will be written from 15 - 18 September. 2) LATE COLLECTION OF PUPILS It is a major concern of ours that some parents do not collect their children in good time from school after functions and in the afternoons at the end of the school day. Cate, her mother, is caring for her while struggling with her grief at losing her husband, Max, and with the knowledge that Hana’s disease is getting worse by the day, Hana and Cate’s orderly, quiet days are shattered when Laura, Hana’s best friend from childhood, arrives unannounced with her two loud and energetic daughters. Dreaming Water is the heartwarming story of a mother’s courage, a daughter’s strength, and a friend’s love. 10) FAIRMONT FOUNDERS DAY 2015 To all fellow Monties, past and present, on Saturday, 5 September 2015 we will be celebrating Fairmont Founders Day 2015 with a full programme of Sport Events and family friendly activities.
