Application of Electrostatics
Electrostatic Paint Spraying
Application of Electrostatics
Electrostatic Paint Spraying
• Paint droplets from an aerosol
usually become charged by
rubbing against the nozzle of the
spray.
• Car body is earthed, paint
droplets will be attracted onto the
metal body.
Application of Electrostatics
Electrostatic Paint Spraying
• Paint droplets repel each other
and spread out more evenly.
•Areas that are covered with
charged paint would create
repulsion to the fresh layer of
sprayed paint drops allowing better
dispersion of the paint coating.

•Adv:
  • Even coat of paint
  • Paint reaches inaccessible
  parts
 During car
  production, the
  unpainted car body and
  the paint are given
  opposite electric
  charges.
 Unlike charges
  attract, so:
   › The paint sticks to
     every corner of the
     car body
   › The paint covers the
     car body evenly.
 This machine allows
  you to make
  copies of printed
  material.
 Makes use of light,
  heat and static
  electricity.
 (1) & (3) drum inside is charged. Light reflects an image
of document on drum. Dark areas (writing and images
on the original) retains a positive charge.
 (4 & 5) Charged parts of the drum attracts the
  negatively-charged toner ink (black powdered
  particles).
 (6) Toner ink transferred from drum to positively-charged
paper, producing a copy of original.
And laser printers…
Inkjet printers work by spraying charged drops of ink onto a
page. The droplets can be directed using two oppositely
charged plates. The voltage on these plates can be easily
swapped or varied. The inkjet cartridge can also moved across
the page by the printer .
