3. What Is A Smile?
Thank you for visiting Facial Paralysis Institute. Smiling is perhaps the most
important way people communicate with one another. At the Institute for
Facial Paralysis, we are committed to helping all of our patients regain this
important feature of daily life. We know you are here because you or a loved
one may be experiencing a facial nerve disorder. The facial nerve is one of the
most important neurologic components in our daily lives as its primary role is
controlling the muscles of facial expression - and hence our smile
mechanism. Smiling is the most innate way that we communicate with
others. It is hard to truly answer the questions "what is a smile." We have
compiled some famous quotations about smiling.

4. Philosophy of The Facial Paralysis Institute
The most important treatment objective for individuals with facial paralysis is
prevention of unwanted eye complications, reconstruction of facial
movement, restoration of a dynamic smile, and improvement of facial
aesthetics.
At the Institute for Facial Paralysis, Dr. Azizzadeh and his team of facial plastic
surgeons, otolaryngologists, neuro-otologists, neurosurgeons, head & neck
surgeons, ophthalmologists and physical therapists utilize a systematic
approach to reach these objectives. Each patient will be initially consulted by
Dr. Azizzadeh who will then utilize different members of the team to obtain the
best possible outcome. A true multidisciplinary approach is necessary in the
treatment of facial paralysis.

5. Physical therapy
Overcoming the effects of facial paralysis is a
long and difficult process. Dr. Azizzadeh and the
staff of of The Facial Paralysis Institute know the
importance that each step along the journey to
facial reanimation has in a successful recovery.
Our goal is to provide a physical therapy program
that will help facilitate facial symmetry and
improve facial paralysis. With the proper exercise
and physical therapy, facial paralysis patients can
recover some of their lost facial movement and
regain the animation in their facial expressions.
