INTRODUCTION
The Earth isour home.
How did the Earth begin?
4.6 billion
yearsago,neither the
Earth norany of the
otherplanets in the Solar
System existed.

12% Nickel
How long is a day?
The Earth takes 23 hours,56 minutes
and 4 seconds to rotate on its axis.
This number is known as siderealday
Exactly how long is a
year?
Every year the Earth travels once around the
Sun. This journey occurs every 365.24 days.
It is this extra
0.24
daysthatcreates
the need for
leapyears.
Was the Earth at the centre
of the Universe?
The Earth was once believed to be the
centre of the universe. That is, people
believed the Sun and the
otherplanetswereorbitatingaround the
Earth.
However,in1514,Nicolaus
Copernicus,aPolishastronomer,postulatedt
hat the Sun was the centre of the universe.
Wheredid the name
« Earth » come from?
Most of the planets in the
solar system are
namedafterdeities of Roman
And Greekmythology.
For example,Uranus is a
Greekdeitythatrepresents
the sky.
The origin of Earth’s
nameisdifferent.
The name Earth comesfrom the Germanicword
« ertho » whichmeans « the soilthatwas the
source of all life ».
Because 70% of the planet is covered
by water. We live in the remaining 30%
solidground.
Why is the Earth called the Blue
Planet ?
It is a photograph of planet Earth taken in
1990 by a spacecraft named Voyager 1.
The photograph was taken from a distance
of about 1,6 billion kilometers.
Is the Eartha Pale Blue Dot ?
Carl Sagan, who was part of the Voyager 1’s
team, suggested taking this picture.
Earth is shown as a fraction of a pixel
against the vastness of space.
