The concern of this email is centered on the academic dishonesty claims brought against me. By no
means is this email not contest the claim for which I regret my mistake it is to extend my sincerest
apology to the Point University Access staff. I was utterly distressed when I received the
notification from Dr. Leon Reese regarding the claim. I admit I have made a crucial mistake, which
may damage my educational pathway. I understand the importance of the violated policies, for the
sake of maintaining a high standard of education. I assure you that my actions were not
conscientious or maliciously motivated; I found no harm in reaching out to Mrs. Newhouse for

People are always tend to choose the easiest way in every task they are asked to do in their
everyday activities. We also tend to cheat and cheating became so trend nowadays, so students start

Technology is rapidly evolving and changing nowadays. As a result of the increasing availability
and propagation of several forms of technology, academic dishonesty cases in every college and

Discussion of Legal Issues
The first step in handling academic dishonesty issues is to determine if academic dishonesty really
took place. Faucher & Caves (2009) describe that academic dishonesty can be classified into three
primary domains including: 1) taking, giving, or receiving information from others; 2) use of
forbidden materials or information; 3) circumventing the process of assessment. In this circumstance,
the student may have committed two of the three domains. If the student used her cellphone to text
another person and asked him/her something about the exam, then she is receiving information from
others, which falls under the first domain. If she used her cellphone to look up for answers on the
internet or retrieve information she might have stored on her cellphone, then she is using forbidden
materials or information, which falls under the second domain. If indeed it is found out that the
student did use her cellphone to cheat on the exam, then disciplinary action must be imposed, but it
must be taken the legal way in order to protect the educator from any legal retaliation. This brings up
two secondary issues related to academic dishonesty which include students' right to privacy and
protecting the whistleblower.

Abstract
The main objective for this literature review is to gather and evaluate data from three studies on
cheating and plagiarism. While these studies were based on cheating they each differ slightly but,
overall, these studies aim to investigate the behaviors and methods that students utilize to cheat, as
well as the reasons why the student decides to cheat. Each study was performed in 3 different
institutions, in three different countries. The statistics investigated were provided by participants
who were students at the institution.

Studies on Academic Dishonesty: Why Do Students Cheat? Cheating and plagiarism has been a
major problem in schools throughout time. Truth is, a student will cheat if they get the opportunity.
There are several ways in which students can cheat: copying a nearby student, writing answers on
the desk, using Internet on phones, etc. Whatever way a student decides to cheat, it is a difficult
task to pull off without being acknowledged by a teacher. So why cheat? It would be much easier
just studying and knowing the information oneself. Many researchers have already asked and
investigated these questions in experimental studies. Three similar articles on these studies are

that even a Catholic Institution of St. Paul University Dumaguete (SPUD) is not exempted to have

Another most important cause of academic misconduct is the contextual factor of an environment of
peer disapproval of cheating, that is, peer pressure. Psychologists note that all people tend to follow
the norms of their peer group, which would include norms about academic dishonesty. Thus, students
who believe that their peers disapprove of cheating are less likely to cheat. Indeed, multiple studies
show that the most decisive factor in a student's decision to cheat is his perception of his peers'
relationship with academic dishonesty.
Teachers also have incentives to cheat. Taking the example of a federal government of the United
States that had mandated high–stakes testing as part of the No Child Left Behind Act, signed into
law in 2002. Schools and teachers are held accountable for the results. As a result, teachers are
known to "teach to the test": while not teaching the actual answers, they teach the questions and
similar ones, and they neglect any topic that will not be tested on. Teachers may also cheat, so as to
inflate the results of tests given in their classroom.
While cheating practices is a global fact, we wanted to somehow minimized, if not completely
eradicate cheating locally (in our own school) through giving emphasis on this issue. This study

Academic Dishonesty
Most people believe that people will cheat just because they are a dishonest person. Although,
scientists have done studies that have shown that most people will cheat under the right situation. In
James Lang's article "How College Classes Encourage Cheating," Lang states, that 75 percent of
students have at least cheated once while attending college (1). Academic dishonesty is a growing
problem in college and there are many possible ways to fix it. My solutions are improving
plagiarism detection software and using it more often and increasing students' knowledge on honor

Grand View Policy on Academic Dishonesty Grand View University students are asked to sign a
code of integrity before the academic school year. The code of integrity is an agreement between the
student and the university to follow rules and promote academic honesty to make Grand View a
better place to be. The university then defines academic dishonesty as a misrepresentation of
personal efforts and honest work. This includes plagiarism, cheating, fabrication and facilitation of
dishonesty (65–66). For the first occurrence the student is under the discretion of the professor. A
second offense means that the student will be removed and failed from the course and they will also
be put on academic probation. After the third incident, the student will be suspended from the
university and the incident will be recorded on the transcript. Another offense will most likely be
expulsion from the university (67).
Solutions for Academic Dishonesty The first solution to help reduce academic dishonesty is to
implement honor codes and frequently revise them. In the journal Academe, by Donald McCabe
and Linda Klebe Trevino recognize the increase of academic dishonesty. McCabe and Trevino
surveyed 2,200 students at 21 different universities. Nine of the universities did not have an honor
code while the others either had a tradition, hybrid, or a modified code. Of the universities who had
modified codes, 3 of them were large public universities. McCabe and Trevino thought cheating
would be more frequent at these institutions because of their size. McCabe and Trevino found that
