1CASE STUDY OF THE LEADERSHIP PROGRAMME AT SUTTON GRAMMAR SCHOOL FOR GIRLS
2. Overview!
In May and June 2014 Errol Lawson and the team from Emerge Leadership worked
with KPMG in Birmingham to provide a unique leadership development opportunity for
sixteen year 10 students from George Dixon Academy. The students that took part were
identified by teachers as those having great potential whom with extra support would
stand a greater chance of being able to go on and realise their potential. The programme
consisted of four half day group coaching workshops over 4 weeks, on site at KPMG
offices in Birmingham. A parents workshop took place at the start of the programme and
parents were also invited to attend the celebration and certificate presentation at the end
of the programme. !
!
The topics covered in the programme
included:!
!
Communication skills: Slam Poet and
championship Boxer Matt Windle was our guest
speaker in this session. Students had the opportunity
to develop their public speaking and communication
skills. !
!
Team working skills: Students took part in a
range of experiential learning team work challenges.
The challenges were designed to enable the leaders
to consider the role they play in helping to make
sure the team effective and to understand the
relationship between the leader and the team. !
!
Goal Setting: Students were able to
understand the power and purpose of goal setting
and they were also given the opportunity to set goals for their lives in 6 areas. !
!
Personal Leadership: Students were able to understand what there core values are.
In turn how their values effect there beliefs, their beliefs effect their behaviour and their
behaviour their results. They were able to critically analyse their own behaviour and
decide upon some changes that need to take place in order to improve their results. !

The response and feedback from the students was fantastic. When asked for their
feedback on the programme the students said:!
!
Throughout this programme I’ve been able to develop my leadership skills, understand
my strengths and areas for improvement and set my goals. I’ve learnt how to coach
myself and others and I've learned how to realise my true potential. Nicole N.
!
I have found this to be a great opportunity. I will take
what amazing things I've learned and spread the
message that anything is possible and you have the
potential to be anything if you try. I am very grateful
for this opportunity and I will use the things Errol has
taught me in everyday life. H.Javed
