The Networked
Society

Mobile World Congress 2013
The Networked Society
Every half century a new technology system that changes everything emerges.
       The Railroad and Iron: 1840s
       Electricity and Steel: 1890s
       Electro-Mechanical Systems: 1950s
Now: Information and Communications Technology
It impacts virtually everything: what we produce, how we produce it, organizational structures, required infrastructure,
information availability and more.
In this station we explore mega city visions and possibilities and some technologies believed to be essential facilitators of
the Networked Society
You also can meet technology research experts from Ericsson and from our collaboration partners that share and discuss
innovation insights and what’s next within ICT and how it supports the realization of the Networked Society.
Topics are e.g. the technology future in areas such as radio access beyond 2020, telecom /IT convergent architectures
and real-time Big Data analytics.
To emphasize the importance of the standardization and open source eco-systems we have invited partners from
universities and CSPs to help us present different initiatives and outcomes.

The Networked Society
We are entering a new reality! Let’s take the long view. Our society today is quite different from that of just
ten or twenty years ago. The rise of the internet, the growth and diffusion of mobile phones, and
developments in global mass-media has changed the world in fundamental ways, and will continue to do so.
I argue that we are in the early stages of a revolution -the broadband revolution. Today people, enterprises,
markets and societies are getting more and more dependent on connectivity and broadband. Today we are
in a world with:
› Empowered People
› Enabling technology
› Expanding business

Transformation
ICT is a game changing technological revolution that impact virtually everything
Efficiency improvements.
Existing value systems are based on structures with certain technology uses, manual labor input, information
exchange etc., for creating the end services. ICT has the potential of improving the efficiency of these
structures basically without changing the end services.

Service disruption.
ICT has the potential of creating entirely new services or radically changing or displacing old ones. Through
innovation new value is created and new services put on the market. This may, or may not, entail the
emergence of new market roles.

Attributes of the networked
society
In the Networked Society we see that
Innovation is changing
Production is changing
Creation is changing
Knowledge is changing
Resources are changing

We need to have a new mindset and realize that ICT is change agent in The Networked Society that both
enable and change what we produce, how we produce it, how we organize production, where we locate
productive activity, the infrastructure needed and what the laws and regulations that are required.

media/entertainment
Let’s use media and entertainment as an example of the changes that ICT has realized.
All media can now be personalized and stored in the cloud enabling availability to be consumed on any device, screen or
sound system.

Media is an essential part of social life with sharing and co-creation.

Contextual triggering of media.

A multitude of business models has been established and is continually being explored.

Personalized journalism and aggregation.

Multimedia publishing for books.

All media on demand except live events

At the station we will show similar material for several industrial systems

Relating to value chains and what roles different telecom operators want and strive to play, we will
share our knowledge of what some of them already do for companies in other industries – to
transform their way of working and communicate.
We will also discuss what is needed from us as a ICT vendor and the building blocks that is
needed to be successful.

Depending on the CSPs business capabilities and objectives their strategies and approaches with
regards to The Networked Society will be different.

We will discuss different possibilities and roles for CSPs to take on and the capabilities they need
to have to be competitive and innovative in that role.

The Networked Society

To realize the networked society both technology and society will bring
challenges. The societal change will bring challenges to business, government
and users and we need government, academic and industry collaborations to
help solve it.
In the technology domain we need high performing networks and cloud along
side with support systems to cater for the huge amount of devices and consumer
& enterprise services all with a diverse set of requirements

Challenges
Services
Services and applications for users and enterprises will put high requirements on cloud & network
infrastructures. High flexibility, very high bit rates and very low delays will be demanded from both
consumer and vertical services.
Devices
The 50B set of devices will range from small sensors and actuators to HD cameras and 3D
displays needed or connected in the services with needs of long battery life and data processing
and management .
Network
There will be a need for higher capacity & coverage as well as higher resilience and robustness in
future networks. Quality of experience will be key and the network needs to handle m2m as well
as infrastructure flexibility and distribution of functions.
Cloud
The cloud will handle a huge data explosion used in analytics and need to cater for demanded
scalability, flexibility and a diverse set of delivery model.

Overarching challenges are seen in Sustainability, Security and Management of the solutions.

The Networked Society

  • 2. The Networked Society Every half century a new technology system that changes everything emerges. The Railroad and Iron: 1840s Electricity and Steel: 1890s Electro-Mechanical Systems: 1950s Now: Information and Communications Technology It impacts virtually everything: what we produce, how we produce it, organizational structures, required infrastructure, information availability and more. In this station we explore mega city visions and possibilities and some technologies believed to be essential facilitators of the Networked Society You also can meet technology research experts from Ericsson and from our collaboration partners that share and discuss innovation insights and what’s next within ICT and how it supports the realization of the Networked Society. Topics are e.g. the technology future in areas such as radio access beyond 2020, telecom /IT convergent architectures and real-time Big Data analytics. To emphasize the importance of the standardization and open source eco-systems we have invited partners from universities and CSPs to help us present different initiatives and outcomes. • 4. The Networked Society We are entering a new reality! Let’s take the long view. Our society today is quite different from that of just ten or twenty years ago. The rise of the internet, the growth and diffusion of mobile phones, and developments in global mass-media has changed the world in fundamental ways, and will continue to do so. I argue that we are in the early stages of a revolution -the broadband revolution. Today people, enterprises, markets and societies are getting more and more dependent on connectivity and broadband. Today we are in a world with: › Empowered People › Enabling technology › Expanding business Mobile World Congress 2013 | © Ericsson AB 2013 | 2013-02-25 | Page 4

  • 6. Transformation ICT is a game changing technological revolution that impact virtually everything Efficiency improvements. Existing value systems are based on structures with certain technology uses, manual labor input, information exchange etc., for creating the end services. ICT has the potential of improving the efficiency of these structures basically without changing the end services. Service disruption. ICT has the potential of creating entirely new services or radically changing or displacing old ones. Through innovation new value is created and new services put on the market. This may, or may not, entail the emergence of new market roles. Mobile World Congress 2013 | © Ericsson AB 2013 | 2013-02-25 | Page 6

Attributes of the networked society In the Networked Society we see that Innovation is changing Production is changing Creation is changing Knowledge is changing Resources are changing We need to have a new mindset and realize that ICT is change agent in The Networked Society that both enable and change what we produce, how we produce it, how we organize production, where we locate productive activity, the infrastructure needed and what the laws and regulations that are required. • 20. networked Society Challenges Services Services and applications for users and enterprises will put high requirements on cloud & network infrastructures. High flexibility, very high bit rates and very low delays will be demanded from both consumer and vertical services. Devices The 50B set of devices will range from small sensors and actuators to HD cameras and 3D displays needed or connected in the services with needs of long battery life and data processing and management . Network There will be a need for higher capacity & coverage as well as higher resilience and robustness in future networks. Quality of experience will be key and the network needs to handle m2m as well as infrastructure flexibility and distribution of functions. Cloud The cloud will handle a huge data explosion used in analytics and need to cater for demanded scalability, flexibility and a diverse set of delivery model. Overarching challenges are seen in Sustainability, Security and Management of the solutions. Mobile World Congress 2013 | © Ericsson AB 2013 | 2013-02-25 | Page 20
