                                                   garden
Xeriscape refers to landscaping with water
conservation in mind. It can be achieved by incorporating
seven basic principles. By adopting these techniques you
can create an attractive, diverse and sustainable landscape
    that uses less water.
The City of Penticton Xeriscape Garden displays many plants and plant combinations
to inspire you, and includes many plants indigenous to the Okanagan’s dry climate. It
is comprised of three distinct planting areas of similar water usage, designated in the
plan by three distinct colour codes.
The Demonstration Garden provides examples of how indigenous and non-
indigenous drought-tolerant plants can be combined to create a water-wise landscape
    on a typical urban property.

All plants are identified with both botanical and common name, and cross-referenced by location.

assigning space for function, privacy and indigenous plants are inherently ‘engineered’ for
navigation. Consider sun and wind exposure, low water use, and offer a familiar and varied
drainage, sightlines, topography, existing habitat for wildlife. Choose the right plant for
trees and shrubs, utilities (both overhead and the right place, appropriate to your garden‘s
underground), soil conditions and local bylaws. soil, micro climate, sun exposure, and drainage.
Commit your plan to paper. Consider each plant’s mature size. Group plants of
                                                  similar water needs together.

D the Demonstration Garden
The two plantings forming the far east sections of the Xeriscape Gardens were designed to provide examples of how indigenous
and non-indigenous drought-tolerant plants can be combined to create a water-wise landscape on a typical urban property.
The garden to the left (D1) has no lawn, and uses a gravel path between the planted areas. The garden to the right (D2) includes
a small lawn of EnviroTurf TM, a mix of drought-tolerant species that form a turf-like surface. In both gardens, plants are chosen
and placed to provide features of privacy, year-round interest, and a variety of size, shape, texture, and colour.

The Xeriscape Garden: A Guide to Water-Wise Landscaping

  • 1. WELCOME TO garden Xeriscape refers to landscaping with water conservation in mind. It can be achieved by incorporating seven basic principles. By adopting these techniques you can create an attractive, diverse and sustainable landscape that uses less water. The City of Penticton Xeriscape Garden displays many plants and plant combinations to inspire you, and includes many plants indigenous to the Okanagan’s dry climate. It is comprised of three distinct planting areas of similar water usage, designated in the plan by three distinct colour codes. The Demonstration Garden provides examples of how indigenous and non- indigenous drought-tolerant plants can be combined to create a water-wise landscape on a typical urban property. Explore the Xeriscape Garden and refer to this guide for: • Seven Principles of Xeriscape • a descriptive list of 40 Top Plants • the Xeriscape Garden planting plan • complete plant list including perennials, shrubs and trees, ornamental grasses and bulbs The Xeriscape Garden is located Okanagan Lake in Marina Way Park, east of the a Way Marin Penticton Art Gallery. ore Lakesh Main inster Westm Eckha rd The garden was planted in 2007. t *Xeri (rhymes with terra) is from the Greek word “xeros”, for dry.

Xeriscape Xeri (rhymes with terra) is from the Greek right word ”xeros” plant, for “dry”. right place plan 1 planning & design A well designed plan involves assessing and 2 plant selection Select plants with low water needs. • 17. D the Demonstration Garden The two plantings forming the far east sections of the Xeriscape Gardens were designed to provide examples of how indigenous and non-indigenous drought-tolerant plants can be combined to create a water-wise landscape on a typical urban property. The garden to the left (D1) has no lawn, and uses a gravel path between the planted areas. The garden to the right (D2) includes a small lawn of EnviroTurf TM, a mix of drought-tolerant species that form a turf-like surface. In both gardens, plants are chosen and placed to provide features of privacy, year-round interest, and a variety of size, shape, texture, and colour. location Botanical name • common Name location Botanical name • common Name D1 Juniperus scopulorum ‘Blue Haven’ • Blue Haven Juniper D39 Chasmanthium latifolium • Northern Sea Oats D2 Mahonia aquifolium • Oregon Grape D40 Schizachyrum scoparium • Little Bluestem D3 Amelanchier x grandiflora ‘Autumn Brilliance’ • Saskatoon D41 Rosa glauca • Red Leaf Rose D4 Ribes cereum • Wax Currant D42 Viburnum plicatum ‘Summer Snowflake’ • Summer Snowflake Viburnum D5 Lavandula angustifolia ‘Munstead’ • Munstead English Lavender D43 Aster novi-belgii • Michaelmas Daisy D6 Achillea tomentosa ‘Moonshine’ • Moonshine Yarrow D44 Buddleia davidii • Butterfly Bush D7 Philadelphus lewisii • Lewis’ Mock Orange D45 Calamagrostis x acutiflora ‘Overdam’ • Variegated Reed Grass D8 Syringa patula ‘Miss Kim’ • Miss Kim Lilac D46 Miscanthus sinensis var. purpurascens • Flame Grass D9 Syringa ‘Tinkerbelle’ • Tinkerbelle Dwarf Lilac D47 Hemerocallis • Daylily D11 Sedum spectabile ‘Brilliant’ • Brilliant Sedum D48 Lavandula angustifolia ‘Munstead’ • Munstead English Lavender D12 Liatris spicata ‘Kobold’ • Kobold Blazing Star D49 Santolina chamaecyparissus var. nana • Dwarf Lavender Cotton D13 Lamium • Creeping Lamium D50 Potentilla fruticosa ‘Sunset’ • Sunset Potentilla D14 Alyssum montanum ‘Mountain Gold’ • Mountain Gold Alyssum D52 Juniperus scopulorum ‘Blue Haven’ • Blue Haven Juniper D15 Penstemon fruticosus • Shrubby Penstemon D53 Sesleria heufleriana • Blue-green Moor Grass D16 Lonicera maximowiczii var. sachalinensis • Sakhalin Honeysuckle D54 Heuchera ‘Mint Frost’ • Mint Frost Coral Bells D17 Miscanthus sinensis var. purpurascens • Flame Grass D55 Koelreuteria paniculata • Goldenrain Tree D18 Juniperus sabina ‘Moor-Dense’ • Moor-Dense Juniper D56 Geranium sanguineum ‘Striatum’ • Blood-red Cranesbill D19 Arctostaphylos uva-ursi • Kinnikinnick D59 Pennisetum alopecuroides ‘Hameln’ • Fountain Grass D20 Iris germanica ‘Loop de Loop’ • Bearded Iris D61 Penstemon pseudospectabilis • Desert Penstemon D21 Chrysothamnus nauseosus • Common Rabbit-brush D62 Rosa x rugosa ‘Therese Bugnet’ • Therese Bugnet Rose D26 Perovskia filigran • Russian Sage D63 Artemisia x ‘Powis Castle’ • Powis Castle Artemisia D27 Panicum virgatum • Red Switch Grass D64 Pinus mugo ‘Mughus’ • Mugo Pine D29 Hemerocallis • Daylily D66 Miscanthus sinensis var. purpurascens • Flame Grass D34 Penstemon pseudospectabilis • Desert Penstemon D67 Pinus mugo ‘Pumilio’ • Dwarf Mugo Pine D35 Yucca glauca • Soapweed D69 Sedum • Showy Stonecrop D36 Spiraea japonica ‘Goldmound’ • Goldmound Spirea D72 Helictotrichon sempervirens • Blue Oat Grass D73 Yucca glauca • Soapweed water use/irrigation:  low to moderate 15
