Initiation of the cardiac cycle normally begins with at the SA node. A resulting wave of depolarization passes through the right and left atria, which stimulates atrial contraction.
Following contraction of the atria, the impulse proceeds to the AV node. The impulse slows at the AV node, which allows time for contraction of the atria. Just below the AV node, the impulse passes quickly through the bundle of His, the right and left bundle branches and the Purkinje fibers and lead to contraction of the ventricles.
