This document contains notes from an anthropology class discussing relativism and conceptions of Africa. It includes topics that will be covered such as a film screening, a lecture on relativism and key themes, and readings on stereotypes of Africa. Relativism topics discussed are fighting ethnocentrism, linguistic relativity, and applying relativism to values. Common stereotypes of Africa mentioned include chaos, poverty, primitive, and AIDS. Readings will address the functions of stereotypes and dichotomous views of Africa in National Geographic as well as romanticized views and the spread of Afrocentric ideology.
