Fuel Cell Collaborative
The Fuel Cell Collaborative was formed by the University of South Carolina, the City of Columbia, EngenuitySC, Midlands
Technical College and SCRA to position Columbia, SC as a leader in hydrogen and fuel cell innovation and technology.
Each of our 5 member organizations brings a critical set of unique abilities to help foster the growth of new technologies and
fuel cell firms. Together, our members create a welcoming environment for partners to thrive locally in Columbia, S.C. and in
the global industry.
The Fuel Cell Collaborative’s mission is to discover, develop and deploy the world’s leading fuel cell technologies from the
heart of the Palmetto State.
The Fuel Cell Collaborative:
Discovers and recruits the next generation of innovators, talent, and researchers
Develops technologies and sustainable, thriving firms that will change the face of the fuel cell market
Deploys projects and businesses into the marketplace through supportive collaborations and lasting relationships with
private sector, higher education, government and community leaders
Fuel Cell Collaborative
With one of the state’s two hydrogen fueling stations,
the City of Columbia is a prime metropolitan area for
launching pilot programs with hydrogen and fuel cell
vehicles or backup power, and showcasing public
demonstrations like existing units at the University of
South Carolina and the U.S. Army’s Fort Jackson.
The Fuel Cell Collaborative has access
to some of the world’s leading
innovators and researchers in
Columbia, S.C. Working with its
partners, the Fuel Cell Collaborative
creates collaborations and
relationships that bring the tools and
resources necessary to maintain our
status as a world-class fuel cell
community.

University of South Carolina
The University of South Carolina works with the Fuel Cell Collaborative to offer access to innovators
through:
Research experts at the College of Engineering & Computing
SmartState Catalysis for Renewable Fuels Center
Upcoming SmartState Hydrogen Economy Center
SmartState Solid Oxide Fuel Cells Center
The Innovista Innovation District is a physical campus covering 500 acres in the heart of downtown
Columbia designed to be office, laboratory, home, playground and community to technology and
innovation focused entrepreneurs, business and start-up companies. Anchored by the nationally
recognized research strength of the University of South Carolina, the Innovation District is a
community that provides exclusive access to a skilled workforce, groundbreaking research, strategic
partnerships and more.
USC– Energy Leadership Institute (ELI)
The ELI is a collaborative effort including more than 125 faculty members from six of the university’s
colleges – College of Engineering and Computing, College of Arts and Sciences, Darla Moore School
of Business,School of Law, Arnold School of Public Health and College of Mass Communications and
Information Studies.
USC already houses eight Centers of Economic Excellence, financially supported by the State of
South Carolina’s SmartState Program, which are directly connected to the mission of the ELI
including the following:
Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Economy
Renewable Fuel Cells
Solid Oxide Fuel Cells
Strategic Approaches to the Generation of
Electricity (Clean Coal)
Nuclear Science and Energy
General Atomics Center for Transformational
Nuclear Technologies
Nanoenvironmental Research and Risk
Assessment
