Let’s not rush into things too quickly.
We’re going to kick things off with the basics. You want to start playing a decent game? Make sure
your gaming area is conducive for you to start practicing.
Basic ergonomics not only ensure you get a better game; it also reduces the chances of you
sustaining injuries like carpal tunnel. Certain emphasis must be placed on this aspect because as a
gamer, you will potentially be spending more time in front of your computer as compared to anyone
else. So do take care of yourself. You ain’t going to game long if your wrist hurts after 2 hours. Trust
us when we say it’s going to suck if that happens.
Here are some fundamentals to healthy ergonomics:
 The monitor should be placed directly in front of you, at a distance of 1.5 to 2 feet away, so your
neck is in a central position facing straight ahead.
 The top of the monitor should be at eye-level.
 Adjust your computer screen to avoid glare.
 Make sure your mouse, keyboard and any other objects frequently used are within arm’s length to
avoid frequent reaching for them awkwardly.
 Your forearms and wrists should be straight and parallel to the ground and be on the same level
as the keyboard.
 Your keyboard should be set at a height which allows your wrist and lower arms to be straight and
for your shoulders to be in a relaxed position.
 Your feet should rest flat on the ground, not dangle above the floor.
Now that we’ve got that out of the way, let’s move on to operating systems.

Most people don’t really care a lot about their operating system. This explains why after a period of
time, it’s very common to hear about complaints about their computers slowing down.
You must understand that your OS needs regular maintenance as well. The more programs you
install and the more stuff you store in it, the higher the chances of it slowing down.
Check out Download.com or Google for utilities that maintain your computer. There are all-in-one
software suites like Tune-up utilities that’s pretty much idiot proof (you just need to click on one icon
and they do the rest).

them and to make sure they put on their best show for you.
Tweaking your hardware for better frame rates in your games is the first step before deciding to
splurge on new hardware. Spending time optimizing your hardware before upgrading it will save you
a bundle in the long run.

all about GaminG mice
Ah…our favorite domain, after all we did start out with the world’s first gaming mouse. While
we could ramble on into the technological and mechanical aspects of what goes into the years
of development of our mice, we’ll keep it simple with the basic “must-know” information about
utilizing your mouse to better your game play.
Gaming mice specifications – DPI? IPS? Lift-off Distance?
This miniature CMOS sensor takes thousands of pictures per
second of the surface pattern. A processor then interprets
mouse movement and speed by comparing successive
pictures. This change is, in turn, reflected on the PC display as
cursor movement.
How good this optical sensor (and so, how good the mouse is)
is primarily based on how many of these “pictures” it can take
as you move the mouse over a specified distance. The
measurement used to determine this is DPI (dots-per-inch). It is how many counts per inch of
movement that is sent by the mouse hardware to the OS. e.g. 400dpi (dots-per-inch) means a
movement of one inch will result in 400 counts of movement. So generally speaking, the higher the
DPI, the more accurate the mouse.

What a higher DPI means to you is better control over your cursor on-screen. A good estimate to
what’s a good precision level to have in a gaming mouse is roughly 3500dpi and above.
As manufacturers race up the DPI charts to outdo each other, some have resorted to using software
interpolation to artificially boost up the specifications on their mice to up to higher levels. The last
thing you want is to pay top dollars for a gaming mouse only to let it disappoint you. Do your due
diligence by reading up on a product over the internet before committing your money to one.
Currently leading the DPI race is the Razer Mamba with its 5600DPI 3.5G Laser sensor that achieves
the highest precision without falsifying the output by software interpolation.
Still with me? Hope we didn’t lose you with the technical mumbo jumbo.
As much as DPI is prominently used as the standard benchmark that gaming mice are marketed
with, it is actually oversimplifying the requirements of a good gaming mouse. There are other lesser
known factors that play just an important part in contributing to the overall performance of a mouse.
In 2004, laser sensor technology was introduced to the
gaming industry and its main appeal was the higher
DPI levels that were not achievable with conventional
optical sensors. Laser sensor technology was heavily
marketed to take over the torch from the older optical
sensors and to become the new standard in gaming
mice.
Although laser sensors are indeed a substantial technological advance, its inception among the
gaming community was sluggish. The key issue that plagued the first generation laser mice was that
it exhibits skipping of the tracking sensor when the mouse is move at fast speeds over the mousing
surface.

Today’s Laser sensors are much more advanced and easily compete with Optical sensors, but these
key issues that the first generation showed let Gamers search for an explanation. What else is
important, if it’s not just DPI?
This missing part of the picture was IPS (inches-per-second). IPS is not commonly discussed by a lot
of manufacturers but it plays crucial role in determining the worthiness of a gaming mouse. What IPS
measures is the maximum speed at which a mouse can be swiped over a surface before it loses its
tracking, causing your cursor to skip on screen. So this means that even if you have a mouse with a
superb dpi, it will still exhibit skipping in your games if it has a horrendous IPS specification on it.
This is even more crucial if you’re a gamer who plays with a low sensitivity setting. Low sensitivity
gamers are known to move their mouse in game at higher speeds and over a larger distance. This is
where a reliable IPS specification on their gaming mouse will kick in and deliver the performance
they need.
A good mouse will never exhibit skipping when moving your cursor for that headshot in an FPS game
or mis-clicking on a unit in any RTS game.

One more factor that is underrated in a gaming mouse is Lift-Off Distance. The lift-off distance is the
maximum distance from the mousing surface that the mouse is still able to track after being lifted.
Again, this is more for the low sensitivity gamers.
Rather than using an oversized surface, these players move the mouse rapidly across a smaller
distance, then physically lift the mouse back to its original position on the pad and repeat the
movement (fig. A).
All sensors continue tracking for a short distance after being lifted from the surface and this result in
small erratic movements of the curser at the moment of lift-off.

Ideally, what you are looking for in a gaming mouse is minimal lift-off distance so that it immediately
stops tracking when your mouse is being lifted up from the mousing surface. This minimizes any
unintended cursor movements.
Referring to Fig. B below, what this means is that the mouse on the left is a more ideal gaming
mouse compared to the one on the right because of its lower lift-off distance.

All these things may sound very minor to you but if you put them all together, the combined impact all
these factors have on your gaming performance can be tremendous.
Never underestimate the impact of all the little things. They have a nagging tendency to snow ball
into something that comes back to haunt you.

Get a grip – Understanding how you hold your mouse and what to get
“What do you mean how I hold my mouse?! With my hand of course, dude!” is what many of you are
thinking right now. But let me bring this seemingly simple topic one level deeper for you =).
After years of studying how gamers hold on to their gaming mice, we have identified 2 major distinct
styles of grip: “Claw” and “Palm”.
The claw grip involves the gamer using his
fingertips to control the mouse. The palm does
not rest on the mouse at all. Using the
fingertips results in greater control over the
mouse as fingertip control offers greater agility
as compared to the “palm” style which uses
the movement of the forearm.
Gaming mice that are built for claw gamers in mind
are usually flatter so that the “butt” of the mouse
doesn’t touch the palm and hinder the movement of
the gamer.
Gamers with a claw grip have sensitivity settings
that ranges from low to high as the claw grip offers
them greater minute movement control. They also
tend to be smaller in size so that it does not obstruct
the delicate fingertip movements.

On the other hand, we have the palm grip.
Gamers who prefer this style have their
whole palm cupped over the mouse, with
their fingers flat over the buttons. The
gamer’s palm rests on the mouse at all
times.
They control the movement of the mouse using a combination of the forearm and the wrist so the
fingers rarely move. This style offers the greater movement possibilities over the mousing surface as
compared to the claw grip. In addition to this, it’s also more stable than the claw grip.
Gaming mice suitable for palm gamers are
usually hunched with an arched “butt” that allows
for the resting of the palm on it. They are usually
larger in size so that the gamer can comfortably
rest his whole hands on the mouse.
What needs to be addressed here is that we’re
not trying to convince you to take up one style
over the other.
The points brought up should serve to enable you
to identify the type of grip you have on your
mouse so that you can make a better choice prior
to making your purchase.

Do you need a mouse with extra buttons?
This is really quite subjective. It depends on the habits of the gamer. It depends on the type of games
the gamer plays. The reason why a lot of mice these days have these extra buttons (beyond the usual
left click and right click) is because gamers bind commonly used functions in their games to these
buttons for easy access and for a quicker response.
Not having to look at the keyboard all the time to search for keys means you can concentrate on the
screen and on your game.
It may sound insignificant because many new
gamers will think “Come on, how long is
looking for a key on the keyboard going to
take?” but as they become better and their
games become more fast paced, they soon
realize the convenience of being able to shave
a few seconds off your reaction time will
prove invaluable.

Keeping your mouse fit for combat
Let’s start with those of you who are still using a ball mouse (Really! Do consider getting an optical or
a laser one). We’ll try not to bore you with how you should clean your ball mouse. There are tons of
guides out there with pictures to help you along.
For the rest of us, these mice have no requirements for you to clean your sensor whatsoever. But one
thing that still plagues gamers is the wearing out of the Teflon feet below your mouse. Game stores
now sell replacement Teflon feet for when your original ones wear out.
Never neglect the importance of a good mouse pad. Just like how race cars perform differently on
different types of roads, your mouse is also
affected by the surface that they run on.
Mouse pads come in different materials
these days and the more common ones are
made of metal, plastic or fabric. Some better
ones come with dual sides so you choose
whether you want a smoother surface or a
rougher one with more grip.
No pro gamer will play without a proper
mousing surface so take a page from their book. Get a decent mouse pad because even modern
optical mice are very dependent on a good mouse pad to be able to perform well. A lot of things
influence the type of mouse mat that you should be using. It depends on the type of sensor you are
using, the speed at which you play and your preferred level of thickness just to name a few.
It’s not something any gamer should underestimate.

On-the-fly sensitivity settings
A new feature that more and more gaming mice have these days is an on-the-fly sensitivity changing
option. This is the ability to change your mouse sensitivity in a game without having to exit or Alt+Tab
out of the game and fiddle with your mouse settings.
Originally, this was intended to save gamers from the hassle of leaving their game, changing their
sensitivity and then loading the game again to test out the new settings. On-the-fly changes made it
possible for them to test out new settings immediate, never needing to leave the game itself.
Over time, gamers adapted this feature to the way they play, using it for aggression to score more
kills in FPS games instead of using it for the traditional convenience factor.
This is how it works:
Typically, a gamer would require a higher sensitivity when using a submachine gun or a rifle because
the closer range combats means more maneuvering is needed to keep the target in view and on the
targeting reticle.
In contrast, the same gamer might prefer a lower sensitivity when he picks up a long range weapon
like a sniper rifle which , because his targets are further (and thus, smaller on screen), needs lesser
movements of his mouse.
With on-the-fly sensitivity changing, many gamers simply use this to swap between the higher and
lower sensitivity settings to suit the current weapon they are using. This way, they are able to fully
exploit each weapon at their best sensitivity settings.

diFFerent Genres oF Games
The breakdown of games can be done in several ways.
We could break down games for the PC and then for the console systems, but many games have
options for both. Nevertheless, the best way to break them down is through the types of game that
they are.
The following are some of the largest genres in games for either or both console or PC gaming
systems.
FPS: First Person Shooter
One of the largest areas and therefore the best place to start is the genre of FPS, or first person
shooter. There is no doubt that this is one of the more popular genres of games that you will find.
Games here include Counter-Strike, DOOM 3, Call of Duty, Medal of Honor and the Halo series in the
shooter style games. The name of this genre really does tell you what it is all about. Action, plenty
shooting, beating the bad guy and more shooting, is what you can expect to find in this genre. Years
of gaming competitions have spawned from this genre and have literally created an entirely new
sport by itself.
FPS games come in both single player and multiplayer elements and gaming teams around the world
have devised collaborative and tactical strategies for use in world-class tournaments.

RPG: The Role Playing Games
The next most popular type of game is that of Role Playing Games, called RPGs for short. You will
find some of the most successful PC games out there in this genre. The point of these games is
you’re usually in control of a character and you complete quests and level up, pounding your way
through to a boss character or saving the world.
RPGs were made popular by the Super Nintendo console system that kicked off its popularity with
superb titles like Chrono Trigger, Final Fantasy and The Legend of Zelda.
Popular PC titles also include the Diablo Series, Knights of the Old Republic, and Fable. Even games
like X Men Legends is considered to be a role playing based game. Some of the most current games
have roots in some type of older role playing game.
MMORPG: Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Games
For those that want to take role playing to the highest level, consider MMORPG games. These games
are just what their name says. They are massively built up games of online players playing a role-
playing style of game.
The draw of these games has been incredible in the last five or so years, as more and more people
began having access to high powered internet servers, allowing faster and better play every year.
The games are mostly played by those that do have broadband or some form of high speed internet
connection. A player’s connection speed is crucial because up to 40 players can band together in a
party to carry out quests or slay larger monsters.
The sheer number of players puts quite a strain on bandwidth requirements to maintain a lag-free
gaming experience.

Such games include the extremely popular World Of Warcraft Series from Blizzard. Dungeon and
Dragons, Ultima Online, Runescape, Ragnarok and Everquest are also extremely popular with
gamers worldwide (some of us in the office are also hooked onto them.)
Players can play others from around the world in very diverse, virtual worlds. This allows for
multitudes of players as well as an ever changing game play. Challenging as it is, it can be an
amazing way to spend your time.
The Sports Games
Not to be forgotten are games that are dedicated to sports. You will find that many of these are on
the console style systems in terms of popularity, but they are often available for both types of
systems. Many of these games are sponsored by the big sporting industries and therefore are the
"fan based" games that you would expect.
Many of these games are sponsored by organizations such as the NFL, NBA, MBA and NHL. You will
find that these games often come with some of the best "sports players" endorsing them, making
them a huge draw for some younger fans.
Included in this genre is the world of sports racing. Leading titles in the genre are games like Gran
Turismo and Need For Speed. With each release, game developers are breaking new levels of
realism in game physics and achieving stunning graphics at the same time.
RTS: Real Time Strategy Games
Consider the world of strategy. Some of the gaming genres above also consider strategy to make
them successful, such as in the role playing games. But, you will also find that there are a number of
games, especially for the PC that based the game solely on this concept. Some of these games have
even been converted into console versions because of their popularity in their original PC
counterparts.
Successful titles includes the Warcraft and the Starcraft series by Blizzard, Warhammer 40,000 and
Command and Conquer.

Simulation Games
For those that fancy real world experience in the world of gaming, the games you want to consider
are simulation games. There are many of these, with more hitting the aisles every day. These games
have seen an incredible bounce of enthusiasm in the world of console gaming in the last few years.
“The Sims” has helped to pave the way for development in this genre. Simulation games have always
centered on the player’s management and multitasking skills. For the control maniac in you, there
are titles that allow you to manage your own hotel, pizzeria, railway station and the list goes on. Some
examples of simulation games include Tropico 2: Pirate Cove and Caesar 3.

For every sequel to any game, there are bound to be changes and tweaks to them. Most of us might
shrug them off, rationalizing that it can’t be THAT much different from the previous one.
I made that mistake in Diablo2. Rogues were not particularly powerful in Diablo so I stepped into PvP
with an Amazon in Diablo2, thinking I was going to own her. How hard was it right? I’ve killed Rogues
before in Diablo =) But boy was I wrong. The Amazon tore me a new one with her simple but deadly
Guided Arrows and Multishot combo =P Needless to say, I spent the night reading the guide that
accompanied the game.
“Each game is different even newer versions of the old game: E.G. Diablo vs Diablo2, Neverwinter
Nights vs Neverwinter Nights 2, Civilization I, II III and IV are all different in rules and play!”
There really is no shame in acknowledging that you’re new to a game. Everyone was new at some
point or another. So read that tutorial or complete the tutorial. If you’re playing an RPG and have
choices to make when you level up, read all about them. It’ll definitely pay off in the long run.

perFectinG your Game play – practice
makes perFect.
Top gaming professionals are perfect, even god-like in their style of play. They know every corner,
nook and cranny that a map has to offer and literally make use of each and every location on the map
to leverage their scores and to destroy their competition. They seem to instinctively know where and
what their opponents are doing, even while they can be miles apart in the same map.
Their prediction, on top of their aim, is nothing next to
amazing and frightening at the same time.
It’s no wonder that many people have actively sought
out ways and techniques on how to be one of the
professionals and to learn their secret “techniques”.
Some of these gamers have honed their skills over
the years, while others seem to have sprung out from
the hidden underground to take over a veteran gamer.
After years of working with professional gamers who range from individual champions to dominating
teams, we’ve dug down and documented the core strategies that have made them leap across the
general casual gamer league to fearsome inner circle elites.
While we do not get into each generic tactic and strategy of each specific game, you can apply these
techniques into further details by your own. The gaming scene changes almost on a daily basis, but
the basic fundamentals remain as a core building block in improving and bringing your gaming skills
to the next level.

Watch demos
Many games have incorporated the ability to save a replay after your match ends. Such a feature has
proved invaluable to mainstream gamers. This allows them to watch the replays of the professional
gamers at their best and learn from it, all this at their own time and pace.
Certain games have replays which you can pause,
fast forward or rewind, which means it’s possible to
re-watch the exciting parts of a replay. This speeds
up the learning process, allowing you to win your
games, and faster. But this is only half the story.
The value of replays is that you can even save
replays from your own games. Knowing strategies
and tips from the better gamers is one thing, but
knowing your own strengths and weaknesses is the
other. Make it a rule to save and watch your own
replays.
In real time strategy games (Command & Conquer, Starcraft etc.), replays often have the option that
allows you to watch the playback with the map totally revealed (i.e. no fog of war). It’s a brilliant way
of comparing your build order against your opponent’s. Find out what is he doing that makes him
faster and steal that technique from him to make it an evolution of your skills.
In addition, voiceover commentary or replay evaluation comments are things you would want to keep
a lookout for when obtaining a replay. There’s not much point in watching a replay and not knowing
what’s happening. Let the more experienced players guide you along the replay and highlight key
strategic movements that’s worth noticing.

correct a mistake, or how to further improve a technique.

only give you the replays, but there are also comments about the games and they highlight the things
that are worth learning from in every replay.

Play more, and then some more.
Constant practice is the foundation to being good at any game.
Games are very dynamic by nature and
accomplished players familiarize themselves
to a multitude of scenarios. It doesn’t stop
there. Constant practice then serves to
improve their reaction time in the face of all
the scenarios present in the game.
This is especially true in FPS (First Person
Shooters) where your agility in a shoot out
determines who lives, and who dies. Practice
should never be undermined.
Just because you’ve seen it all doesn’t mean you know it all. Keep playing and more strategies will be
unveiled to you. Learning progressively is crucial in making sure you keep yourself on top of the
competition.
Many a gamer will tell you straight off the bat that constant practice is the one thing that makes a
good gamer great. Just being able to play the game is insufficient if you strive to excel. Good gamers
play to the point where it becomes second nature. Every reaction and every move is fueled heavily by
instincts and familiarity. Only consistent practice will bring you to this level of game play.
No fancy hardware or game guide you buy can ever achieve this in place of practice.

One great tip in any FPS game is to be able to gauge the distant between your mouse cursor and the
target you want to hit. Your job is to “memorize” how much movement of your mouse is required to
cover any specific distant on-screen. Once you have accomplished this, you’ll be able to “swipe” your
mouse to nail the enemy the moment you see him, resulting in an almost instantaneous reaction.
Play against someone else who still can’t do this and you’ll immediate see how incredible this skill is.
The challenge now would be to find a
sensitivity that you are most
comfortable with and to stick with this
sensitivity in every FPS you play. Tweak
your sensitivity setting bit by bit until
you find the one that gets you the most
kills.
One way to practice this is to find a
target spot in your FPS. It could be a
mark on some wall or maybe even a
barrel or some small object.
Turn 180 degrees around and then
immediate turn around and try to hit
that spot. This would slowly improve your hand eye coordination to the point where you can nail it
almost every time.
Professional gamers track, jump, and do strafing runs until they get perfect at it, after which they
refine it further till it gets to a point where they just repeat the motion in a real gaming tournament.

Learn By Playing With Other Teams
Let’s be frank. There’s only so much you can learn about any game by playing with the computer AI or
by playing with your own circle of friends. You may accomplish a level of game play that’s competent,
but not good.
Go out and see the world. I’m not talking about traveling all over the country to look at the pros play
at every tournament. You’ll be surprised that there are probably a couple of players or teams in your
neighborhood cyber café that kicks ass at their game.
On top of that, many of them could potentially be looking out for new
teams to play with.
Playing with a myriad of gamers allows you to be exposed to the many
different play styles. As mentioned, games are merely a medium. How
one player utilizes the weapons and options available in the game can
vary very different to another. Being exposed to different styles of play
makes it possible for you to pick up some good tips and improve on
them, making you a better player.
Not only that, once you’ve figured out the main strategies your
opponents use, you’ll be able to break them down and pinpoint the
weaknesses. So on one hand, you become better at the game; the other hand, you are better
equipped to exploit your opponent’s weaknesses.
Learning by playing is also a great way to improve because by interacting with actual gamers, you’ll
be able to understand their game play mentality and get insightful tips from the better players. So
don’t just play with other teams, be friendly. Gamers are usually more willing to give up more tips
once you warm up to them.

Memorize the maps
In any RTS or FPS, the games are played on certain maps. Committing the layout of the map and the
exact location of any resources (gold, power-ups, etc) to memory will dramatically improve your
game play and increase your chances of a win.
In RTS games, good players will very often rush to take control of a resource location before the
opponent does. Knowing exactly where the resources are means you don’t waste time scouting
around for it. In the example of a FPS, having fully memorized your map means that you will be able
to rush straight to any location with a strategic advantage, be it a higher ground or a choke point that
your opponents frequent and gaining the upper hand.
Memorizing the layout of the map also mean you’ll know all the back alleys or alternative routes to
take if you want to backstab a camping enemy or a sniper.
Break your opponent’s rhythm and predict your battlegrounds
In any game, common clashing zones exist in maps. In FPS, this is usually an open space in the
middle of the spawn zone of both teams; a narrow tunnel choke point or any grounds where firefights
between players or teams are frequent. Knowing how fast it takes you and also how fast it takes your
opponents to get there can net you a huge advantage.
Imagine playing an FPS and you have a few grenades in your inventory. Predicting and accurately
identifying where your opponent will be by the time you are near a familiar clashing zone means you
can lop a few grenades over to damage him before he even sees you.
Likewise, in a RTS, being able to accurately time where your enemies will be means you’ll be able to
place a few siege units or mines before he walks into them and into the arms of certain doom.

Most players have a certain rhythm to their game. This is mainly because once most gamers are used
to a certain approach to their game. They become too comfortable with it and tend to stick to and
repeat their movements.
This rhythm is more obvious as you play against a certain player over time. The trick here is to take
away that comfort in your opponent. If they are expecting you at a particular area all the time, then
just not be there at that time you normally reach it.
Purposely waste a minute or two at your spawn point. Doing this makes your own rhythm
unpredictable and it makes it more difficult for the opponent to pre-empt you.
If they won’t know where and when to expect you, they will continuously fear that you might backstab
them. Take away their confidence and you’re a step nearer to victory.
Tracking Respawn Time For Power Ups
Power-ups are common in many games. One common characteristic of power-ups is that they
usually re-spawn after a certain interval. Your job is to memorize this interval. Getting power-ups as
soon as they spawn accomplishes two things. One, you become more powerful. Two, your opponent
doesn’t get a chance to become stronger. It’s win-win for you.
Some games like Quake has an in-built timer you can choose to have displayed on screen while you
play so you can make reference to it and know when you should be running back to the armor or
weapon spawn point.
If your game doesn’t have this feature, a simple way around this is to place a small timer or clock
beside your monitor. It achieves the same result and trains you to be more disciplined in keeping
track.

If you were to look at many good players, they tend to place quite a high importance on securing
power ups or resources.
Knowing when they will spawn and where they are located is incredibly crucial because the last thing
you want to do is to waste time and effort running around to search for them or running to a location
only to find out that the power up has now spawned or has already been taken by your enemy.

Improve Your APM with Shortcut Keys
APM stands for actions-per-minute. This is more commonly a term for RTS gamers.
In RTS games that involve selecting units and building certain structures, there can be sub-
commands that can be given to these units. For example, attacking units may have special abilities
that must be activated by the gamer or structures must be given commands before they will launch
an attack or build you a unit. Having to move your mouse around clicking frantically to issue all these
commands, while executing your attack, wastes an incredible amount of time.
In almost all RTS games nowadays, shortcut
keys are made available to every command you
have to issue. For example, the “A” key on your
keyboard is commonly used for an “Attack”
command. Commit the commands you use
frequently to memory so instead of moving your
cursor back and forth between the battlefield
and your command panel, you can swiftly hit a
series of keys to issue the exact same command
to your troops.
If you’ve taken the recommendation and have bought yourself a mouse or keyboard with
customizable keys, use it. Binding a series of keystrokes to a single key or button will save you a lot of
time and reduce distractions. Instead of wasting time clicking on your barracks and building more
units, bind the action to the shortcuts keys instead. Your concentration is better off spent on
destroying your enemies or forming a strategic formation.
After all, if you spend your time looking for each key in order to type out an email, you’ll take an
eternity to write it. Speed is everything.

Play Against the Player, Not the Game
A common pitfall of new players is that they focus only on the stats of units in the game and believe
that winning or losing is a numbers game. Good players think beyond the game. They focus on
exploiting the weakness of the player behind the game. Some players have a more defensive style,
and others play more offensively.
Play with their minds. A defensive player will have a certain expectation of you to run into their traps
or guns. If you can successfully disrupt this expectation of theirs, you’ll be able to instill panic in your
opponent. When they panic, that’s when they start making mistakes. The whole idea is to cause
confusion in your opponents.
Gaming is a psychological battle between human players; the game merely a medium.

Slumps – What are they and what to do
A slump is simply a point in time when your frags simply drop, you get backstabbed a lot, you can’t
kick ass like you used to, and you just can’t figure out why! You’ve checked your settings and nothing
changed. You’ve checked your hardware and there’re no problems with any of them. So why has your
performance suddenly hit rock bottom? This, my friend, is what the pros call a slump. Like in any
other professional sport where the star player is on a losing streak over a few seasons, this happens
in computer gaming as well.
Many gamers will be disheartened and many are tempting
with quitting the game totally. What most people don’t
realize is that it happens even in the best of us. It sure as
hell doesn’t mean you’ve lost your edge. It doesn’t mean
that’s your limits and it’s the best you’ll ever get. What I’m
trying to drive at is that it very well doesn’t mean you suck!
A general advice is to just take a break from the game and
get your mind off doing something else. The last thing you
need at this point is to force yourself to continue playing
and still get the same crappy kills.
It hurts morale a lot. You’ll have to understand that as you
play more and not give up, your slumps become less
frequent. Don’t ever write off a slump. In any good gamer,
they fully accept that slumps are unavoidable and what
they work towards is to improve their skills such that even in a slump, they still perform reasonably
well. They are able to take a slump and turn it into a source of motivation.
This differentiates winners and losers so make that your own goal as well.

Gaming Etiquette
We’re all here to make computer gaming a more pleasant activity, be it for you or for the people that
we play with. You have probably experienced players who ruin a game with their unnecessary
comments and name calling. It happens.
Etiquette in gaming is not a necessity, but it’s definitely desired and appreciated. What’s the point of
being the best player around but have a nasty reputation that drags your name into the mud?
Let’s start with the name calling. Gamers have to understand that the repercussions of this are
usually wider than what they think it is. When you decide to embarrass yourself by lashing out at
someone from the opposite team, it puts a dent in the morale of your own teammates because you
might very well be embarrassing them when you start making a scene.
It’s easy for people to get heated up while gaming but it takes some level of discipline to draw the line
between the game and reality. The aggressiveness should stay in the game.
If you play online, you might have come across players whom you suspect is playing with a cheat of
some sort. As much as it may be natural to want to start pointing fingers, calm down and think about
it. Is it worth it to start pointing fingers and disrupt the game for everyone?
How sure are you that he’s cheating? If you’re not, we recommend against hurling accusations on an
empty basis. If the other player really wasn’t cheating, it may backfire and make you look bad at the
end of the day.
Good gaming etiquette can very often be the sole element that differentiates between an enjoyable
game versus a frustrating one. It establishes a solid foundation for friendly game play and healthy
competition.

Visit Gaming Forums, But Don’t Get Trapped.
Gaming forums are great avenues to draw information from
and learning miscellaneous tips and tricks from fellow
gamers.
Often you can chance upon an extremely powerful or sneaky
strategy and apply it to your game play to improve it even
more; however forums pose a threat that can eat away at
your time if you get swallowed in with all the banter and non-important chit chat.
While we recommend that you spend some time browsing
forums, one of the best strategies is to apply a time limit to
how much time you spend on each forum.
45 minutes of pure browsing can take place very easily and
throw you off your originally intended visit – which was to
learn two to three techniques.
We highly recommend that you note down or bookmark a useful forum thread or page each time you
visit a forum and test it out yourself in order to ascertain that it’s useful for your own use.

Never assume that what is posted is pure truth, and always take
secondary advice from the self-proclaiming “experts” with a
huge pinch of salt.
Another useful aspect of gaming forums is that you can make
like-minded friends and form potential team mates in the same
game that you enjoy. Again, beware of the time-wasting element that forums are extremely notorious
of. Stay out of bickering and flaming sessions as they do absolutely nothing but to reduce the time you
could have possibly used for training your skills.

World Cyber Games
World Cyber Games is another association that you need to learn about if you want to be a
professional gamer. This is an international gaming association that is operated by International
Cyber Marketing, out of Korea. Microsoft and Samsung are two of the largest backers of this gaming
organization.
WCG was first organized in 2000 with its first gaming tournament a year later. This is a once a year
festival, of sorts that allows gamers to meet and stay in "villages" where they will compete. The set
up is much like that of the Olympics.
Countries are sponsored and invited by the organization to compete in this positive gaming
experience. Each country is responsible for finding their best "players" such as in the Olympics by
hosting their own specific preliminary rounds of competition with only the best of the best moving to
the festival themselves.
Over 700 players will compete in the finals. The finals are held at a different host city each year. Over

Razer collaborates with gamers to develop, manufacture

In 1999, the Razer Boomslang™, the stuff of gaming legends, was launched after much research.
Featuring an unprecedented precision of up to 2000 dpi when other mice maxed out at 400 dpi, the
Razer Boomslang, powered by proprietary opto-mechanical technology, offered up to five times the
accuracy of other gaming mice. It came as no surprise when professional gamers worldwide such as
Jonathon “Fatal1ty” Wendell and Sujoy Roy readily adopted the Razer Boomslang as their gaming
mouse of choice. In just two years, more than 100,000 Razer Boomslangs were sold by Christmas.
The next quantum leap came with the unveiling of the Razer Diamondback™ in San Francisco at the
Grand Finals of the World Cyber Games 2004. The Razer Diamondback™ was the world’s first 1600
dpi optical gaming mouse. Powered by Razer Precision™, the Razer Diamondback was the first
gaming mouse ever to sweep all the major gaming awards available at that time. It also outclassed
an entire genre of gaming hardware to be awarded the highly coveted Gamespot's Gaming Hardware
of the Year 2004 accolade. The Razer Diamondback was considered the de rigueur gaming mouse of
its prime with most of the leading gaming professionals adopting it as their weapon of choice.

Having led the technology arms race and overpowered competitors, Razer once again stamped its
authority in gaming technology in the fall of 2005, by launching the Razer Copperhead™. Sporting the
world's first 2000dpi laser sensor in a gaming mouse, the Razer Copperhead scored another world
first by being an “intelligent mouse,” possessing 32kb of onboard memory powered by Razer
Synapse™. It is also the fastest mouse today, utilizing a full speed USB bus when other mice are still
low speed USB devices, and is up to 8 times faster in terms of data polling.
Shortly after the Copperhead, the Razer Tarantula™ was
launched. It is the first definitive keyboard created for
Gamers by Gamers, featuring anti-ghosting capabilities,
32kb of onboard memory powered by Razer Synapse, 10
programmable gaming hot keys and an optimized
Hyperesponse™ gaming key-top with fully replaceable
keys. The Razer Tarantula was launched at CES 2006 (Las
Vegas) and immediately was a finalist in the Best of CES
Show.
The realization that gamers also need excellent positional audio and crisp acoustics led to the launch
of the Barracuda™ HP-1 and AC-1, Razer’s initial foray into audio. Hot on the heels of the Barracuda,
Razer unveiled the Razer DeathAdder™ towards the end of 2006. Featuring a 3G Infrared sensor,
1800dpi and easily 2.25 times faster than conventional mice, the DeathAdder also has a response
time of 1000HZ/1ms and 5 customizable buttons.
Right about then, Microsoft and Razer decided to co-develop and co-brand Microsoft’s next
generation of gaming peripherals, culminating in the Microsoft|Razer Habu gaming mouse, and the
Microsoft|Razer Reclusa gaming keyboard.

Further diversifying the product line for gamers, it was in the Spring of 2007 when Razer and THX
announced a partnership on next generation audio products. With that, the Razer Mako™ was
announced at CES 2007, Las Vegas, and garnered Wired Magazine’s ‘Most Innovative of CES.’ The
Razer Mako is in a class of its’ own, with an innovative downward firing design eliminating distortion
from the ‘desk-bounce’ phenomenon, which creates a rich, omni-directional soundstage with a broad
and uniform response pattern.
