2. WHAT’S IT ALL ABOUT?
Ello has recently taken the internet by storm with its claim that it will never sell
ads to users, which lead to disbelief among many in the social networking
community.
However, now the site is taking legal measures to ensure it will live up to its
promise.
3. ELLO SENDS OUT A MESSAGE
Ello has recently sent out a memo to its subscribers urging them not to worry, as
it will always offer an ‘ethical ad-free social experience’.
It explains how it has converted itself into a Public Benefits Corporation, which
means it is liable to follow rules laid down in a charter.
4. WHAT RULES MUST ELLO FOLLOW?
Ello’s founders and investors have committed to never making money from
selling ads or selling its users data.
The conditions also mean that if Ello was to be sold on to another company, the
new owners must abide by the same rules or face prosecution.
Paul Budnitz, Ello’s founder, has said: ‘we’re really creating a way to enshrine
Ello, legally, as what we intend it to be.’
‘The bottom line is we’re not going to sell out and no one can make us sell out.’
