This document outlines techniques for effective classroom management and teaching, including the use of dialogue, feedback, and reflection. It emphasizes that a teacher's attitude sets the tone and discusses steps like class discussion, written feedback, student goal-setting, and dialogues. Students should be given regular feedback opportunities and taught to self-reflect through prompts and journaling. This helps students take responsibility for their own learning and critical thinking.

26. Student Self Assessment/Reflection Page WEEK of : Name : My Behaviour Very good Good OK Needs Improvement My Use of English in class Most of the time Some of the time A little bit Not much I was On Task The whole lesson Most of the lesson Some of the lesson Not really I did my homework All done Most done Some of it done Not done The Effort I made : Very good Good OK I need to improve Problems Circle as many as you need to. Talking to friends and fooling around Not understanding the material Not understanding the teacher Getting low grades .
Explain my rationale of the use of feedback / reflecction and dialogue.. ( we are partners.. Kids need to be active and NOT passive learners.. And need to figure out (with me) how to do this..
Your job is to know how to manage the kids and teach them how to manage themselves
Kids want you to hear them.. REALLY listen to them.. They expect it , need it and have a lot to say.. So how do you this when you have so many pupils.. ??
As teachers we need to let our pupils know that we are there behind them and have expectations.. And that we believe in ALL of them.. IF not.. Uh oh..
So step ONE was setting YOUR attitude .. And it really is STEP ONE !! SMILE..
If they can learn how to assess themselves.. And you can engage them in a dialogue ..
I will discuss a few ways today.. But there are many more.. We must get our students to learn to think about the part they play in the learning process. WE can be great teachers and know our material but if the kids are NOT with us (for a million reasons then we won’t be teaching them anything)
What do you do with this feedback ?? THAT is what is important ..
Discuss the importance of Feedback from kids in all ways, shapes and forms. Ask if anyone uses them . HOW.. Say that there are summative and formative.
Ask if they know what formative feeedback is ?? An xample of the beginning of a feedback page.. What does it do to the kid when s/he reads the first questions.. (ASK them )
Intro summative pages.. WHY ? WHEN..
You need to know that you can really hear the student and that he can hear you !!
Opening remarks.. This talk will focus on why reflection is a useful / effective tool.. And how it can make our students partners in the learning process. Make them responsible and be better learners.. And of I will give some ideas how to do it ( use reflection in the classroom)
Teaching them to reflect is a giving them an opportunity think about what they are doing/ why they are doing.. And making learning.. Sometihng.. Which progresses and doesn’t get stagnant..
For what is reflection if not a way to transform ourselves..
Try to encourage them to truly look at both their weaknesses and their strengths. Where do I need help ? How can I get it ?
Discuss here how the teacher needs to monitor them and help them reflect .. Do they really see themselves ..
We really need to guide them here.. To set short term goals which are achievable or doable.. Goals which are realistic.. ( NOT get 100 on every test ).. And the goals must be their own. OWNERSHIP is so very important.. !!
