As libraries move to become centers of digital collections, maintaining information on the usage of these collections is ever more critical. It's also essential to be able to maintain common measures across heterogeneous collections, in order to be able to effectively analyze how the library's collection dollars are being spent. The Project COUNTER Code of Practice and the SUSHI protocol aid in this work. This session will explore the newly-published Release 4 of the COUNTER Code of Practice for e-Resources and highlight its use in conjunction with the SUSHI (Standardized Usage Statistics Harvesting Initiative) protocol in an active library environment.

Heather Crozier, presenter Student debt is a compelling issue and many institutions are investigating solutions to ease the financial burdens of their students. Increasing the use of open educational resources benefits students by reducing course costs. Adopting OER in the classroom allows faculty more freedom in choosing instructional tools. Faculty also benefit from open access publishing by increasing their exposure. However, on the campus of a small, private institution, attendance at workshops to spread awareness and increase the use of these materials was minimal. Faculty had the perception that free resources could not be the same quality as traditional resources. In order to dispel this myth, the Electronic Resources Librarian and Educational Technology Manager collaborated to create custom one hour sessions for individual departments, leveraging library/faculty liaison relationships and the expertise of the office of educational technology. In the session, faculty learn more about open access publishing options, the value of open educational resources, the quality of many open educational resources, and where to find these resources. The session uses the course management system to both disseminate the information shared in the session and create a forum for departments to share resources with each other. Through the CMS, faculty gain access to vetted resources. All attendants have editing privileges within the site after the workshop, allowing them to curate course-specific lists for sharing and future reference. Pilot sessions have been well received and wider implementation is planned for the next academic year.

The study - Library Services Benchmarks 2016: Corporate Library Services in the Pharmaceutical Industry published by Best Practices, LLC examines the trends and staffing benchmarks such as library staff per potential and actual users across companies providing access to library services across the bio-pharmaceutical space. This study looks into staff with formal education level and the number of staff inside and outside the library who provide library services. Evaluating the Big Deal: Usage Statistics for Decision Making

Libraries play an increasingly comprehensive role in the research lifecycle, yet metrics and measures (both qualitative and quantitative) that illustrate the fundamental role and impact of the library in research still need to be developed. Research libraries need first to define the values by which they want to be measured, rather than trying to manifest those values from the data that they have traditionally collected. To this end, the Association of Research Libraries (ARL) underwent a visioning process for its assessment program between February and October 2017. The goal of this project was to develop a forward-looking program that advances the organizational outcomes of the 21st century research library. One result of the visioning process was a clearly elaborated need for research libraries to demonstrate their function in advancing and collaborating in the research enterprise. Rather than trying to define “impact” and “value” independently, the new ARL assessment program will set the context for understanding and communicating the stories of the research library to external stakeholders and provide the tools for members to tell this story locally. At the heart of this work is a framework that aims to draw a map of the landscape of services and functions provided across all research libraries. The comprehensive framework, and proposed new data points, will help research libraries translate their values into measures. The presenters will demonstrate how this collaboratively developed (and evolving) framework paints a map of the research library assessment landscape and how it will be used to understand and measure the role of the library in supporting institutional missions.

Over the recent years, there has been a growing interest in developing new scientometric measures that could go beyond the traditional citation-based bibliometric measures. This interest is motivated on one side by the wider availability or even emergence of new information evidencing research performance, such as article downloads, views and twitter mentions, and on the other side by the continued frustrations and problems surrounding the application of citation-based metrics to evaluate research performance in practice. Semantometrics are a new class of research evaluation metrics which build on the premise that full text is needed to assess the value of a publication. This talk will present the results of an investigation into the properties of the semantometric contribution measure (Knoth & Herrmannova, 2014). We will provide a comparative evaluation of the contribution measure with traditional bibliometric measures based on citation counting.
