Colours of the Night,
Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), New York.
The first exhibition to be devoted to Van
Gogh's representations of the evening and
night, a theme which recurs throughout his
oeuvre. Famous works from international
collections were included in the exhibition.
It was the first collaborative project that
the Van Gogh Museum has undertaken with
New York’s MoMA.

November 20
Ceremonial Planting, New York Botanical
Garden, New York.
HRH Princess Margriet and Prof. mr. Pieter
van Vollenhoven were honorary guests at
the ceremonial planting of rare Dutch tulip
bulbs in the ‘Seasonal Walk’ of the New
York Botanical Garden (NYBG). The Walk
was designed by Dutch garden architects
Piet Oudolf and Jacqueline van der Kloet.
The first planting symbolized the start of
the cooperation between the NYBG and the
International Flower Bulb Centre for the
NY400 celebrations in 2009.

December 2008

14 December
Het geheim van Amsterdam…, Felix Meritis,
Amsterdam.
Tijdens dit event gaven ondernemende
persoonlijkheden uit de culturele sector en
het bedrijfsleven hun visie op de geest van
Amsterdam. Frans Timmermans sloot af
met een betoog over de Amsterdamse
waarden die in de 17e eeuw naar New York
(toen Nieuw Amsterdam) werden
geëxporteerd.

De Nieuwjaarsreceptie van de stad
Amsterdam stond in het teken van NY400.
Tevens vond de lancering plaats van het
boek van Russell Shorto en Geert Mak,
getiteld 1609; De vergeten geschiedenis
van Hudson, Amsterdam en New York,
plaats (uitgegeven door Stichting Hudson
400).

onthulling van het ontwerp van het New
Amsterdam Pavilion.

15 Februari – 7 Juni
Colours of the Night,
Van Gogh Museum, Amsterdam.
In deze tentoonstelling van werken van
Vincent van Gogh die eerder in het MoMA
werden getoond, stonden zijn schilderijen
van de ‘avond en nacht’ centraal.
De tentoonstelling kwam voort uit een
samenwerking tussen het Van Gogh
Museum in Amsterdam en het MoMA in
New York.

March 6 – September 7
Fashioning Felt,
National Design Museum, New York
This exhibition at the Cooper-Hewitt gave a
comprehensive overview of the varied uses
of felt in contemporary design. Highlights of
the exhibition were the site-specific
installations by two of today’s leading hand-
felters, American designer Janice Arnold
and Dutch designer Claudy Jongstra.

18 Maart
Opening Keukenhof, Lisse.
Koningin Beatrix opende de 60-jarige
jubileumeditie van de internationale
bloemententoonstelling Keukenhof.
Het jubileumjaar had als thema:
USA, New Amsterdam - New York, 400.
Congressman Maurice Hinchey was
aanwezig bij de opening.

18 Maart
Ontvangst Congressman Hinchey en
Brooklyn Borough President Marty
Markowitz, Stadhuis, Haarlem.
Ontmoeting met Burgemeesters van
Amersfoort, Breukelen, Haarlem,
Vlissingen en Wassenaar, in het Stadhuis
van Haarlem.

Foto: De speciale editie van Elsevier over
Amerika, getiteld Ons Amerika, werd in het
Stadhuis van Haarlem overhandigd aan
Congressman Hinchey en de toenmalige
Amerikaanse Consul Generaal Marjorie
Ames.

Brooklyn Borough President Marty
Markowitz bracht een bezoek aan
Breukelen, waar hij werd ontvangen door
de Burgemeester van Breukelen, Ger Mik.

25 Maart – 12 April
New York Loves Amsterdam:
Contemporary Urban Graphics,
Amsterdam.
Als onderdeel van NY400 en het NY Nights
Programma vond er in Amsterdam een
internationale uitwisseling plaats tussen
New Yorkse en Amsterdamse vormgevers.
Centraal stond grafische vormgeving en
street-art.

30 Maart
NY400 zakenlunch, Amsterdam.
De WTC Business Club ging in het kader
van NY400 in debat met staatssecretaris
Frans Timmermans, architect Ben van
Berkel en schrijver Russell Shorto. Het
thema was New York - Amsterdam, de
verschillen, overeenkomsten en de
toekomst.

1 April
Bezoek First Lady of New York State Mrs.
Michelle Paterson, Keukenhof, Lisse.
De Keukenhof eerde de First Lady van de
staat New York met een narcis:
'Narcissus Mrs. Paige Paterson'.
Michelle Paige Paterson, erevoorzitter van
de NY400 viering in New York State, bracht
een bezoek aan Nederland in het kader van
NY400.

1 April – 7 April
New York Nights, Amsterdam.
Een week vol debat, cultuur, dance en
design. Tijdens de NY Nights werden
diverse evenementen georganiseerd ter
gelegenheid van 400 jaar vriendschap
tussen New York en Nederland. Het
programma van New York Nights begon
met een openingsevenement in de
Ridderzaal, de Night of the Stars.
Daarnaast prikkelende debatten, zoals
P!oneers in Felix Meritis en de Town Hall
Meeting in de Westerkerk. Maar ook
culturele evenementen, zoals de sneak
preview van Weerzien met Manhattan in
het Rijksmuseum, het designfestival Cut 'n
Paste in Paradiso en een streetdance-
wedstrijd Topscore XXXSperience in
Escape.

1 April
Night of the Stars, Ridderzaal, Den Haag.
Officiële opening van de NY400 viering in
Nederland, georganiseerd door de Holland
America Friendship Foundation. De
opbrengst is gegaan naar culturele- en
educatieve uitwisselingen die bijdragen aan
het versterken van de band tussen
Nederland en de VS.

P!oneers – PART ONE, Conferentie over
actief burgerschap, Felix Meritis,
Amsterdam.
In een feestelijk divers programma met
talkshows, optredens en workshops zijn
hedendaagse pioniers op zoek gegaan naar
inspiratie en de kracht van verandering. Zij
onderzochten de kruispunten van
technologie en democratie, comedy en
politiek, macht en muziek. De conferentie
was speciaal gericht op nieuwe vormen van
burgerschap.

1 April – 3 April
Richard Avedon – Photographs 1946-2004,
FOAM, Amsterdam.
Speciaal voor New York Nights was FOAM
van woensdag 1 april t/m vrijdag 3 april
iedere avond geopend tot 21.00 uur. Ook
werden er gratis avondrondleidingen
gegeven.

2 April – 1 Juni
Weerzien met Manhattan, Opening
tentoonstelling, Rijksmuseum Amsterdam.
Het Rijksmuseum toonde in samenwerking
met het Nationaal Archief verschillende
documenten die te maken hebben met het
ontstaan van de kolonie Nieuw-Nederland
en de handelspost Nieuw-Amsterdam aan
het begin van de 17de eeuw, het
tegenwoordige New York. Eén van de
topstukken van de tentoonstelling was de
Schaghenbrief uit 1626, afkomstig uit het
Nationaal Archief. De Schaghenbrief is het
enige document dat melding maakt van de
aankoop van Manhattan, het eiland waar
de kolonie Nieuw-Nederland werd gesticht.

4 April
Cut ’n Paste, Designfestival,
Paradiso, Amsterdam.
Het debuut van Amsterdam in het
internationale ‘Digital Design Toernooi’. Een
“battle of skills, speed and style” waarvan
de winnaar Amsterdam mocht gaan
vertegenwoordigen in het allereerste Cut ’n
Paste Global Championship in New York (20
juni 2009).

4 April
Town Hall Meeting, Westerkerk,
Amsterdam.
Een gezamenlijk initiatief van HH400
Stichting en het John Adams Institute.
Nederlanders en Amerikanen gingen tijdens
de Town Hall Meeting samen op zoek naar
de verschillen en overeenkomsten tussen
beide steden (NY en Amsterdam), beide
landen (NL en de VS) en hun inwoners.
Russell Shorto, Geert Mak en
staatssecretaris Frans Timmermans
spraken over het gedeelde DNA van
Amsterdam en New York. O.a. Sam Roberts
(The New York Times) en Ruth Oldenziel
namen deel aan de discussie.

Young Professionals Event, Heineken
Experience Hall, Amsterdam.
De Young Professionals Committee van de
American Chamber of Commerce in
Nederland organiseerde een event met
schrijver Russell Shorto en Heineken
Directeur Frans van der Minne. Het debat
ging over het verleden, heden en de
toekomst van Nederlands- en Amerikaans
ondernemerschap.
4 April
Contemporary Urban Graphics Exhibition:
The New York Loves Amsterdam Exchange
Voormalig kadaster en toekomstig Art’Otel,
Amsterdam.
De expositie toonde het werk van een team
van internationale vormgevers, bestaande uit
11 designers en urban artists uit Amsterdam
en New York.

4 – 5 April
Mini Museum Nacht, Amsterdam.
Speciale openstelling van FOAM, het
Rijksmuseum, Van Gogh Museum,
Amsterdams Historisch Museum en Anne
Frank Museum.
4 – 5 April
Topscore XXXsperience
Streetdance wedstrijd, Escape, Amsterdam.
Gezamenlijk inititatief van XXXS, de
jongerenkaart van Amsterdam, HH400
Stichting en gemeente Amsterdam.
Danswedstrijd voor jongeren tussen de 12 en
de 18 jaar. Hoofdprijs: een reis naar New
York en deelname aan een Talent Swap (zie:

Re-Thinking History, Native American Films
and Dialogue, Amsterdam.
Native American speakers, performers en
filmmakers presenteerden hun visie op de
komst van Nederlandse pioneers naar New
York, 400 jaar geleden.

Schuttersgallerij, Amsterdams Historisch
Museum, Amsterdam.
Lancering van een historische wandel- en
fietstocht langs vijftien historische plekken
in Amsterdam, die een belangrijke rol
hebben gespeeld in de gezamenlijke
geschiedenis van twee belangrijke
(financiële) centra: Amsterdam en New
York. Auteur: Linda Maas. Gezamenlijke
uitgave van Capitaal Amsterdam (o.a.
Euronext Amsterdam en de Stichting VvdE)
en HH400 Stichting.

April 4 – September 27
Amsterdam/New Amsterdam
The Worlds of Henry Hudson
Museum of the City of New York, NY.
This exhibition, about colonialization on
the North American Eastcoast by the
Dutch, was opened by Minister Frans
Timmermans. The exhibition consisted of
stories, images and objects that illustrated
the Dutch travels and discoveries,
developments in New Amsterdam, the
Dutch influence on what would later
become New York, and the economic,
cultural and ideological connections
between New York and Amsterdam.
During the summer of 2009, several
lectures were organized that were
connected to this exhibition.

Henry Hudson for Kids Tour,
Amsterdams Historisch Museum,
Amsterdam.
Educatief programma, zowel in het
Nederlands als in het Engels, over Henry
Hudson, Amsterdam en New York. Het
programma begon in de Schuttersgallerij.
Hier vertelde de Stadsverteller van
Amsterdam over het leven in de 17e eeuw,
de spannende zeereis van Hudson en zijn
bemanning en de spectaculaire ontdekking
van Manhattan. Vervolgens liepen de
deelnemers onder leiding van
museumdocenten/gidsen de Henry Hudson
for Kids Tour. De Tour kon ook gratis
worden gedownload via de site van het
AHM.

6 April
Urban Health; A Public Health Tale of Two
Cities, PART ONE, De Duif, Amsterdam.
Conferentie met als thema: zorg voor
kwetsbare en gemarginaliseerde burgers in
de stad. Zowel Amsterdam als New York
kent problemen met groepen mensen die
zorg nodig hebben, maar hier zelf
nauwelijks om kunnen vragen. In beide
steden hebben de lokale overheden een
grote invloed op zaken als huisvesting,
inkomen en medische zorg. In Amsterdam is
de GGD een belangrijke speler, in New York
is dit The NYC Department of Mental Health
and Hygiene.

6 April
Muntslag Manhattan vijfje, Koninklijke
Nederlandse Munt, Utrecht.
Premier Balkenende slaat het eerste officiële
NY400 hightech Manhattan vijfje in
aanwezigheid van Nederlandse en
Amerikaanse scholieren.

Amsterdam/New York, Lezing,
Oude Kerk, Amsterdam.
Onno Ruding sprak in de Oude Kerk over
"USA and Europe: Different Values and
Behaviour in Finance?”. De avond werd
muzikaal opgeluisterd door het strijkkwartet
‘The Hague String Variations’.

April 9 – 12
Nederlands Dans Theater II, Premiere,
Joyce Theatre, New York.
The internationally acclaimed Nederlands
Dans Theater II, founded over 30 years
ago, is known for being one of the most
revolutionary ensembles in the world of
contemporary dance. Returning to NYC
after ten years, NDT II presented three
works by Lightfoot León.

21 April
Amsterdamlezingen: 400 jaar Amsterdam -
New York, Universiteit van Amsterdam.
In deze lezingenreeks werd gekeken naar de
historische- en actuele betekenis van New
York voor onze hoofdstad. Wat valt er te
leren op stedenbouwkundig gebied of wat
betreft immigratie vraagstukken? Zo vond
op 21 april de lezing ‘De ontsluierde stad’
door Lodewijk Asscher plaats, over het
leven in, en het vormgeven van, de stad
Amsterdam.

NY Pops, Carnegie Hall, New York.
During this concert at Carnegie Hall,
specially selected young musicians from
the Netherlands performed together with
their fellow musicians from New York.

25 – 26 April
IDFA Goes West, Openbare Bibliotheek
Amsterdam.
In het kader van de NY400 viering
organiseerde IDFA het speciale programma
IDFA Goes West, waarin verschillende
kanten van de veelzijdige Amerikaanse
cultuur aan bod kwamen.

Hail Henry!, Benefit dinner/concert,
Riverside Church, New York.
The American Friends of the Royal
Concertgebouw Orchestra presented this
one-time concert. It featured the
renowned Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra
Brass Ensemble and brass players and
percussionists from the New York
Philharmonic.

April – November
Half Moon – Voyage of Discovery, NY.
Students sailed on a replica of the Half
Moon and learned about navigation,
sailing and history.

April 30
The Glory of Dutch Bulbs; A Legacy of 400
years, New York Botanical Garden, NY.
Opening of an exhibit that featured more
than fifty thousand rare Dutch bulbs. This
unprecedented indoor exhibition - inspired
by the lavish gardens at the Keukenhof,
renowned for its vibrant spring displays -
celebrated 400 years of Dutch supremacy
in bulb cultivation. Curators were Piet
Oudolf en Jacqueline van der Kloet.
Partners: New York Botanical Garden,
International Flower & Bulb Center and
Henry Hudson 400.
April 30 – November 20
Queen’s Day Celebration, New York.
Launch of 200 orange bikes (‘400 wheels’)
in New York. Biking Tour through the city
after meeting with Deputy Mayor Lieber en
singer Lou Reed.

May 6 – July 27
Aernout Mik, MoMA, New York.
This exhibition presented a series of
installations by Dutch artist Aernout Mik
(born 1962) placed in non-gallery spaces
throughout the Modern Museum of Art.
Mik’s work encompasses motion-picture-
making, architecture, sculpture, sociology
and social comment.

May 6 – September 13
Object Factory; The Art of Industrial
Ceramics, Museum of Arts and Design,
New York. The exhibition explored how
(Dutch) artists and designers revived
interest in ceramics through collaborations
with industry. Object Factory featured
more than 200 pieces by fifty artists,
designers, and industrial manufacturers.

May 7 – December 23
Dutch Threats: Highlights from the
Collection of George Way,
Snug Harbor Cultural Center & Botanical
Gardens, Staten Island, New York.
The exhibition consisted of a period room
installation and a cabinet of small Dutch
drawings and paintings. The period room
was representative of the interiors from
the century that is known as the Golden
Age of Holland (17th century).

14 Mei – 23 Augustus
NY Perspectives - Amsterdam discovered by
NY photographers, Stadsarchief,
Amsterdam. In de tentoonstelling ‘NY
Perspectives’ presenteerden vier
verschillende fotografen uit New York hun
visie op Amsterdam. De vier fotografen
maakten ieder een reportage rondom een
thema: ‘Outskirts’, ‘Water’, ‘Night’ en
‘Pedestrian’.

Holland’s Golden Age in America:
Collecting the Art of Rembrandt, Vermeer,
and Hals, The Frick Museum, New York.
This symposium celebrated the
contributions of American art collectors to
the appreciation of masterpieces of
seventeenth-century Dutch art. It
underscored the long and historic
attraction Dutch culture and Dutch art
have held for Americans in general and
New Yorkers in particular.

May 16 – June 14
400 Years Later: Cite goes Dutch,
CITE, New York.
In this exhibition, everything from
furniture and tabletop objects to jewellery
was presented. It included works from 23
emerging Dutch designers, 6
manufacturers and 1 emerging
photographer. Theme:
1609: The Dutch Discover New York
2009: New Yorkers Discover Dutch Design

Feest in de Hudsonstraat, Amsterdam.
Iedereen was welkom en maakte kans op
een vliegticket naar New York!

May 19 – October 13
Mannahatta / Manhattan: A Natural
History of New York City,
Museum of the City of New York.
Through cutting edge multi-media,
historical artefacts and maps, and
interactive visuals, this exhibit at the
MCNY showed what the island of
Mannahatta looked like at the time of
Henry Hudson's arrival: a fresh, green
new world at the moment of discovery.

May 19
Opening ‘New York Dutch Room’,
Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York.
The Museum’s new New York Dutch Room
comes from an 18th-century house built
by Daniel Peter Winne (1720-1800) on the
famed Van Rensselaer Manor (present-day
Bethlehem, New York, outside of Albany).
The style was characteristic of the earliest
Dutch settlements in Manhattan, Brooklyn,
and the Albany region in particular. The
New York Dutch Room is in use as a
gallery for the Museum’s superb collection
of furniture, silver, and painted glass
made or used in the Dutch cultural areas
of colonial New York.

24 Mei
Holland Mania Lezing & Discussie,
Pieterskerk, Leiden.
Annette Stott, auteur van het boek Holland
Mania, kwam speciaal over uit Amerika om
deze lezing te geven. NRC journaliste Tracy
Metz leidde na de lezing een discussie
tussen Annette Stott en panelleden Jaap
Jacobs en Ivo Smits. De lezing vond plaats
in het kader van de manifestatie Holland
Mania: Amerikaanse en Japanse
beeldvorming over Nederland,
georganiseerd door Stedelijk Museum De
Lakenhal (Leiden).

May 28 – December 31
New Amsterdam Trail,
Lower Manhattan, New York.
To make historic Dutch Manhattan come
alive, the Henry Hudson 400 Foundation,
the Nationaal Archief, the National Park
Service and the New York Harbor
Conservancy, joined forces and created
the New Amsterdam Trail. The Trail was
multi-platform and available as a self-
guided, ranger-led, or virtual walking tour.

4 – 14 Juni
ANYtime – Viering Amersfoort - New York,
Amersfoort.
In 2009, wat voor beide steden
een jubileumjaar was, gingen
Amersfoorters en New Yorkers op
zoek naar onvermoede
overeenkomsten en vermakelijke
verschillen. ANYtime was een grenzeloos
uitwisselingsproject, waarbij Amersfoorters
en New Yorkers elkaar ontmoetten langs de
digitale snelweg. Hoogtepunt was een
festival van 4 t/m 14 juni in Amersfoort,
met een podium, expositieruimte en een live
verbinding met New York.

June 5, 2009 – January 3, 2010
Pages of the Past: the Breukelen
Adventures of Jasper Danckaerts,
The Brooklyn Historical Society, NY.
Nineteen local teens curated this
exhibition, which chronicled the voyage of
Jasper Danckaerts through 17th century
Brooklyn. His journals and drawings
provide vivid insight into Dutch colonial
New York.

June 6
River Day: Relay Flotilla, New York.
After the official opening by Governor
Paterson, the yacht clubs of Manhattan
and NYC sent their membership out
around the tip of Manhattan and the
Statue of Liberty. The boats were led up
the river by New York State heritage
flagships. The flagships, amongst which
the famous Onrust and Half Moon, re-
traced, over the course of seven days,
Henry Hudson's historic path to Albany.

June 11 – September 13
Dutch Seen: New York Rediscovered
Museum of the City of New York.
In this exhibit, Dutch photographers
presented their vision of what New York
City is like today.

13 – 20 Juni
Brooklyn Connection, Breukelen.
In Breukelen vonden verschillende
activiteiten plaats in het kader van de
‘Brooklyn Connection’. De relatie Breukelen
- Brooklyn heeft een speciale positie binnen
de verschillende stedenbanden. Het
programma BrooklynBridgeBreukelen heeft
een fundament gelegd onder een unieke
historische relatie, met herkenbaar
toekomstperspectief. De georganiseerde
activiteiten waren o.a. een jaarmarkt met
een Amerikaans tintje (zoals gratis popcorn
en veel Amerikaanse muziek), een
etalagewedstrijd, en een Brooklyn Night in
het Park.

June 13, 2009 – January 10, 2010
Dutch New York: The Roots of Hudson
Valley Culture, Hudson River Museum, NY.
The exhibition, which was three years in
the making, followed the story of the
waxing and waning of Dutch influence in
America that began with Henry Hudson’s
voyage for the Dutch East India
Company aboard the ship the Half Moon,
in 1609, to the New World.

On June 28, an ‘I Amsterdam Wedding’
float participated in the NYC Gay Pride
Parade. Afterwards, a wedding party for
gay couples was
held at the NY
harbor and an after
party for 400
people.

Battery Conservancy Spring Gala, NY.
Minister Timmermans attended the event,
during which the Netherlands was awarded
the ‘Battery Medal for Cultural Heritage’.
In a tribute to the Dutch, the guests were
dressed in royal orange, delft blue and
porcelain white.

PICNIC Salon NY emphasized the
countries’ and cities’ shared creative DNA.
PICNIC was organized in order to create a
stronger and lasting cooperation between
Amsterdam and New York in the fields of
creativity, media, entertainment and

1609, New York State Museum.
This exhibition looked back on the Dutch
period in New York State history. Focus
was on the interaction of the Dutch and
Native People of New York during these
years. The exhibit re-examined Henry
Hudson’s voyage, the myths that surround
it, and explored the legacies of
Hudson’s unexpected discovery.

Schoolmeester’, Westzaan.
Het papier voor de Amerikaanse

Hudson, New York.
Macy’s 4th of July Fireworks returned to
the Hudson River for the first time since
2000. Organized to honor the country’s
independence and this year themed
around the NY400 celebration.

Vijf New Yorkse gaykoppels, waarvan één

de koppels door Burgemeester Job Cohen
getrouwd (rechtsgeldig in Nederland en NY

Royal Roots Revisited: Saluting the Dutch
House of Orange-Nassau, Exhibition,
The Vander Ende – Onderdonk House, NY.
Rare coins, vessels and ephemera, ranging
in date from the establishment of New
Amsterdam through the modern era,
provided historical and cultural context for
the House of Orange-Nassau's enduring
relationship with the Empire State. Archival
photographs of Dutch monarchs' visits to
New York were also exhibited.

August 3 – September 8
Light on New Netherland, Federal Hall, NY.
A travelling exhibit consisting of 26 two-
dimensional panels that introduced adults
and children to important, but not well-
known, Dutch aspects of American history
and culture. The exhibit was shown in
venues throughout the former New
Netherland area and beyond . Ultimately, it
will become a part of the permanent exhibit
of New York City's New Amsterdam History
Center.

Bowling Green Park, New York.
Traditional Dutch canal houses, a windmill
and a stage. Some of the best known
Dutch agricultural products and foods could
be sampled and bought in the village,
including cheeses, herring, dollar pancakes
(poffertjes), sirup wafels (stroopwafels)
and flower bulbs. In addition, a model of a
Dutch greenhouse was showcased.

September 7
Royal Honours, Medals of the Order of
Orange-Nassau, awarded in NY.
Congressman Maurice Hinchey, author
Russell Shorto (photo), captain (Halve
Maen) Chip Reynolds and owner of the
Halve Maen, Andy Hendricks, were
awarded a royal honorary medal by Her
Majesty Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands.

NY400 Week in NY

September 8
The NY400 week opened with the
ceremonial entry of Dutch and NATO ships,
including Dutch naval frigates HNMLS
Tromp and Van Speijk, the replicas of the
Half Moon and the Onrust, Flying
Dutchman racers, traditional Dutch barges
and several others, on the Hudson River.
The HMNLS Tromp, its crew lined up on
deck in parade formation, saluted New York
with a 21-gun salute, followed by the
official NY400 Week opening on board the
USS Intrepid. Their Royal Highnesses the
Prince of Orange and Princess Máxima,
Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, Mayor
Michael Bloomberg and Minister Frans
Timmermans participated in the opening
ceremony. The Royal Netherlands Navy
Band provided musical accompaniment to
the welcoming ceremony.

Also on September 8:
- Royal visit to West Point and Albany;
- Lighting of the Empire State
Building in orange in honor of NY400;
- Miles4Justice: a sailing project for human
rights.

September 8 – 13
Flying Dutchman Race, Manhattan, NY.
Sailboats in the Flying Dutchman class,
representing 10 countries, competed in the
'1609-2009 International Flying Dutchman
Class 400th anniversary of New Amsterdam
Regatta' on September 8, 9 & 10, and the
'1609-2009 International Flying Dutchman
Class Centennial World Championships’ on

Organized by HISWA Holland Yachting
Group. The program consisted of;
- an exclusive VIP network reception and
dinner with the most important spokesmen
of the Dutch Super Yacht Industry,
attended by NY yacht club members,
important financial decision makers and
government officials.
- an exhibition of Dutch-built super yacht
scale models.
- the premiere of the Dutch Super Yacht
Documentary. This documentary aimed to
give viewers a precise understanding of the
Dutch Super Yacht Industry.

Vermeer's Masterpiece; The Milkmaid,
Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York.
This exhibition marked the first time that
the Milkmaid has travelled to the US since
it was exhibited at the 1939 World’s Fair.
To celebrate this extraordinary loan from
the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, the Met
organized a special exhibition that brought
together five paintings by Vermeer, along
with a select group of works by other Delft
artists, placing Vermeer’s Milkmaid in its
historical context.

September 6 – 20
Jobswap, Amsterdam & New York.
In a unique exchange of work experience,
knowledge, and culture, Amsterdam and
New York nurses, teachers, fire-fighters
(Photo: the fire-fighters with Minister
Timmermans), musicians, organic farmers,
bartenders, singer/songwriters, public
prosecutors, and park rangers swapped
jobs for a week. Real-estate tycoon Cor van
Zadelhoff swapped with American
counterpart Bill Rudin.

The Amsterdammers spent September 6-
13 in New York; the New Yorkers spent
September 13 - 20 in Amsterdam.
Organized by the Henry Hudson 400
Foundation.

New Amsterdam Pavilion,
The Battery, New York.
The New Amsterdam Plein and Pavilion was
the gift of the Netherlands to New York in
honor of 400 years of friendship. Designed
by Dutch architect Ben van Berkel of
UNStudio, the Pavilion is meant to serve as
a gathering place for New Yorkers,
commuters and tourists, as well as a
tribute to our common history and shared
values. Princess Máxima and Prince Willem
Alexander attended the festive unveiling.

September 9
Lost & Found, New Museum Sky Room,
New York.
The program consisted of audio-visual
presentations by artists, writers, poets and
musicians. Lost & Found was initiated in
Amsterdam in 1997. The idea arose from
an urge to show material which doesn't fit
comfortably in a gallery; work which
demands more concentration than the
usual walk-by, or seems out of place
anywhere.

September 9 - 10
H209 Forum: Water Challenges for Coastal
Cities, Conference, New York and The
Future of Water Gala (benefit dinner for
watermanagers of the future).
The H209 International Water Forum
commemorated the pioneering spirit of
Henry Hudson by bringing today’s water
experts together with future engineers and
managers to explore sustainable solutions
to the real challenges facing the
Netherlands and the NYC/New Jersey
metropolitan region. Above all, it focused
on cooperation and shared expertise, in
order to make cities like New York,
Amsterdam, and Rotterdam prosperous,
dynamic and sustainable.

Speed Dating With the Low Countries,
Columbia University & The Times Center,
New York.
An introduction to the Dutch language and
Dutch-speaking culture, including
literature, movies, theatre and music.
Included artists such as Spinvis, singer-
songwriter Sarah Bettens and novelists
Stefan Brijs, Joke van Leeuwen, Tommy
Wieringa and Russell Shorto. The renowned
historical linguist Nicoline van der Sijs
presented the first copy of her book
Cookies, Coleslaw and Stoops on the
influence of the Dutch language on
American English and the languages of the
Native Americans. The event was jointly
organized by the Nederlandse Taalunie and
the Department of History of Columbia
University.

September 10
Dutch Financial Day, parallel sessions in
New York and in Amsterdam.
On Dutch Financial Day, the financial
industry organised four finance-related
events:
1) the VEB Financial Breakfast. The VEB is
the prime shareholder organization in the
Netherlands. Goal of the breakfast was to
explain to US participants how the Dutch
Corporate Governance model works and to
discuss this model with them.
2) the Sustainability and Finance lunch. For
this event approximately 80 guests, who
are involved in the world of Sustainability
and Finance in New York, were invited.
This in order to promote cooperation in the
field of sustainability.
3) closing of the NYSE by Minister Frans
Timmermans.
4) the NYSE Euronext dinner. This dinner
was hosted in the NYSE for Dutch and
American captains of industry and was
attended by Their Royal Highnesses the
Prince of Orange and Princess Máxima of
the Netherlands.

New Island Festival & Pioneers of Change,
Governors Island, New York.
The New Island Festival brought the
greatest elements of Oerol and the Parade
(Dutch Outdoor Theatre Festivals) together
in a special and spectacular NY-edition.

Also on Governors Island:
In and around eleven Commanding Officer
houses, the Pioneers of Change Design
project took place. This project aimed to
encourage a more responsible and
sustainable approach to living and
celebrated the blurring of low- and high-
brow and the value of handcraft. It brought
its visitors special and sustainable Dutch
‘design experiences’.

September 10
Urban Health; A Public Health Tale of Two
Cities, PART TWO, Conference, New York.
A conference on the care for vulnerable and
marginalized people in our societies. The
goal was to exchange professional
knowledge between New York and
Amsterdam.

September 10 – October 15
Nature as Artifice, Aperture Gallery, NY.
This exhibition showcased the work of 18
Dutch and foreign photographers and
artists who gave their interpretation of the
changing relationship between man and
nature.

September 11
At the West End Collegiate Church, a
commemorative service was held for the
9/11 victims. Prince Willem Alexander and
Princess Máxima attended this service after
they attended the annual commemoration
at Ground Zero.

Four Freedoms Awards, Award Ceremony,
The Waldorf Astoria, New York.
Dutch Minister of Foreign Affairs Maxime
Verhagen held a speech at the presentation
of the Four Freedoms Award to US
Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. The Four
Freedoms Medals and Award are presented
each year to men and women whose
achievements have demonstrated a
commitment to those principles which
President Roosevelt proclaimed in his
historic speech to Congress on January 6,
1941, as essential to democracy: freedom
of speech and expression, freedom of
worship, freedom from want, and freedom
from fear.

11 September
The New York Connection, AVRO & IDTV
Docs, Première Documentaire.
In the New York Connection ging schrijver
en filosoof Dirk van Weelden in het New
York van vandaag op zoek naar de vroege
geschiedenis van de stad. Alle vier de
afleveringen werden uitgezonden op de
Nederlandse televisie en zijn inmiddels
verschenen op DVD.

The New Amsterdam Bike Slam, Center for
Architecture, New York.
Two teams of pioneering Dutch and
American planners & designers presented
their visions to bring New York City cycling
up to the level of the Netherlands, the only
country with more bikes than people.
Spread over three days, the New
Amsterdam Bike Slam was a battle, a
bridge, a conference, a cocktail, a dance
party, and a path forward.

September 12
Friesland Day, Governors Island, New York.
On September 12, the New Island Festival
was centred on Friesland. In addition, one
of the characteristic Colonel Houses on the
island, renamed 'Friesland Residence' for
the occasion, served as a meeting place for
the guests of Friesland Day, including
supermodel Doutzen Kroes (photo). Also
the Fryslân House (a meeting place and
office space for Frisian companies in New
York City) was officially opened and the
book Famous Frisians in America was
presented.

New Amsterdam: The Island at the Center
of the World,
South Street Seaport Museum, New York.
In this groundbreaking exhibition visitors
could explore how the Dutch colony New
Amsterdam laid the foundation for today’s
New York City. Visitors encountered rare,
17th century maps, views and plans of New
Amsterdam and the surrounding areas, as
well as important letters and documents.
The most prominent piece of the exhibition
was the 1626 Schaghen letter (on loan
from the Nationaal Archief), which
mentions the purchase of Manhattan for
goods worth of 60 guilders. (Top photo: the

presented by ING, Governors Island, NY.
Free Dance Event on Water Taxi Beach by
world-famous DJ Armin van Buuren.

Also this day: Henry Hudson Bike (biking
tour); The Island (educational online game
for students in Amsterdam and New York,
developed by de Waag and the John Adams
Institute in Amsterdam).

September 12 – 13
Hudson River Valley Heritage Weekend, NY.
During this first Hudson River/Champlain
Valley Heritage Weekend, over a hundred
museums, historic and architecturally
significant places, heritage sites,
battlefields, parks, and recreation areas
welcomed visitors free or at reduced rates
with special events, including tours,
performances, reenactments and other
great celebrations. Among the participants
were many Dutch heritage sites.

Harbor Day, New York.
Harbor Day was a city-wide public event.
Water was the overarching theme of the
day, with a wide range of activities up and
down the Hudson and in New York’s
waterfront parks. Apart from a bicycle tour
led by the Netherlands' Prince of Orange
and Princess Máxima, there was also a
‘Holland on the Hudson flotilla’, free bike-
and ferry use for all, and performances by
several artists such as Ellen ten Damme
and Esmée Denters.

Double Dutch, Hudson Valley Center for
Contemporary Art (HVCCA), New York.
An exhibition that celebrated the
Quadricentennial by showcasing
contemporary Dutch installation art and art
with a Dutch ‘soul’ (work that echoes the
influence of Dutch architecture, sculpture,
furniture and/or landscape).

Dutch New York between East and West:
The World of Margrieta van Varick, The
Bard Graduate Center, New York.
This exhibition explored the life and times
of a fascinating woman, her family and
possessions. Born in the Netherlands,
Margrieta van Varick spent the better part
of her life at the extremes of the Dutch
colonial world: in Malacca (now Malaysia)
and Flatbush (now Brooklyn). The
groundbreaking research conducted for this
exhibition and its accompanying catalogue
made an original contribution to the
histories of New York City, Dutch overseas
colonial and commercial networks, the life
of women in the Dutch overseas colonies,
and the material culture of New York under
Dutch and English rule.

September 19 - October 29
Towing the Line, Drawing Space:
40 Contemporary Dutch Artists, Defining
the Moment in Holland, WHITE BOX, NY.
This exhibition presented work from forty
contemporary artists, all born in the
Netherlands. The works that were on view
all related to the field of drawing and
ranged from work out of the 1970s to the
present day. It showcased contemporary
Dutch artists and their affiliation to the
New York art world.

September 20
Visit Prime Minister Balkenende to Wyckoff
Farm and Governors Island, New York.
The Wyckoff Farmhouse Museum is the
oldest structure in New York City, with
rooms dating back to 1652. Originally a
Dutch West India Company bowery, the
Wyckoff Farmhouse is a survivor from the
period of New Amsterdam. At the farm,
Prime Minister Balkenende was welcomed
by Brooklyn Borough President Marty
Markowitz.

Mapping New York’s Shoreline; 1609-2009,
New York Public Library, New York.
This exhibition celebrated the Dutch
accomplishments in the New York City
region, especially along the waterways,
forming its urban watershed, from the
Connecticut River and Long Island Sound to
the North (or Hudson) River and the South
(or Delaware) River. On display were maps,
atlases, books, journals, manuscripts,
prints, and photographs. Half-dozen
objects, including globes and navigational
instruments, were on loan from the
National Maritime Museum in Amsterdam.

September 29 – October 4
Emio Greco|PC, Joyce Theatre, New York.
The internationally renowned Dutch
company Emio Greco|PC blended raw
musicality with refined physical virtuosity in
the thrilling NYC premiere of [purgatorio]
POPOPERA.

Rensselaerswyck Seminar: Kiliaen van
Rensselaer's Colonie: The Beginning of
European Settlement of the Upper Hudson,
Empire State Plaza, New York.
The New Netherland Institute presented
the 32nd Rensselaerswijck Seminar. It
began with a lecture by Russell Shorto and
focused on the Rensselaerswijck
patroonship and genealogical resources for
tracing one's Dutch ancestors both here
and in the Netherlands. Speakers included
Len Tantillo, Janny Venema, and Charles
Gehring.

October 2 – 4
Grand Opening of the Walkway over the
Hudson, Poughkeepsie, New York.
The Poughkeepsie-Highland Railroad Bridge
was built in the late 19th century to link
New York and New England to the coal
beds of Pennsylvania and the West. The
bridge was abandoned in the 1970s and sat
for decades, because it was too expensive
to tear down. This year's 400th anniversary
of Henry Hudson's river trip helped push
the $38 million project to repair it as a
walkway. In October the bridge was
festively opened. It is now officially the
longest pedestrian bridge in the world.

October 5 – December 31
Models of Concern: The Exhibition, Trespa
Design Centre, Soho, Manhattan (NY).
After travelling from Amsterdam (Stedelijk
Museum) to Hong Kong (HK Design
Center), this exhibition was on view in NY
from October to December 2009. It was a
collection of scale models that represented
the resume of designer Gilian Schrofer's
company ‘Concern’ and herewith over four
years of wide ranged interior design. The
architectural models in the exhibit stressed
the contemporary relationship between
architecture, design and art.

On Sunday November 1st, 400 NY400
Dutch runners (photo) joined the 40th
running of the ING New York City Marathon
in an effort to raise awareness for the
NY400 celebration. Hundreds of Dutch fans
covered in orange lined up to cheer for the
runners.

Lenape Exhibition, Ellis Island, NY.
This exhibition, devoted to the original
inhabitants of Manhattan, was opened by
Dutch Consul General Gajus Scheltema.

Donck Lezing, Breda.

Op Zoek naar Nederlands New York &
Indianenverhalen, Haarlem. Jaap Jacobs en
Kees-Jan Waterman, beide gespecialiseerd
in Nederlandse en Amerikaanse
geschiedenis, gaven lezingen over hun
recent verschenen boeken. Zo is Op zoek
naar Nederlands New York van Jaap Jacobs
een reisverhaal waarin op zoek wordt

Cities in Revolt: The Dutch-American
Atlantic, ca. 1650-1830,
Columbia University, New York.
This conference brought together European
and American historians to discuss
comparisons and connections between
Dutch and American radical politics in the
long eighteenth century. Amsterdam and
New York were two of the preeminent sites
of intellectual and political revolt in that
century, and the cities and their regions
shared deep financial, cultural, personal
and intellectual links. Those links and their
political significance have generally been
overlooked in the literature on Dutch-
American relations.

Welcome to the Woods,
Witzenhausen Gallery, New York.
The International Theatre Laboratory
Workshop presented the US premiere of
Alex van Warmerdam’s Welcome to the
Woods (Welkom in het Bos). Translated
from the original Dutch play & directed by
Erwin Maas.

Cultural Festival, New York.
‘5 Dutch Days 5 Boroughs’ has been an
annual festival of events since 2005. In
2009 it celebrated four centuries of Dutch
art and culture in NYC. The project brought
together arts and cultural organizations
from each of the five boroughs of New York
City, including museums, galleries, historic
sites, preservation groups and professional
organizations. The event featured an
exciting variety of programs, including
walking tours, exhibits and performances.

16 November
Dutch American Heritage Day
De gemeente Den Haag heeft een warme
band met de Verenigde Staten. Om deze
banden nog eens aan te halen,
organiseerden de Amerikaanse
Ambassadeur Mevr. Fay Hartog Levin en
Burgemeester Van Aartsen van Den Haag
een feestelijke bijeenkomst met
schoolkinderen. Tevens werd het stripboek
‘Strijd om New York’ aangeboden aan
Ambassadeur Levin en Minister Verhagen.

16 November
Spirit of Exploration, Space Expo,
Noordwijk.
Dit speciale evenement vond plaats in het
kader van Dutch American Heritage Day.
Bijzondere gast was de astronaut Steven
Smith. Hij deelde zijn unieke ervaring van
vier ruimtevluchten en zeven
ruimtewandelingen. De bijeenkomst werd
geopend door de Amerikaanse
Ambassadeur Mevr. Fay Hartog Levin.

The P!oneers Sessions brought together a
group of 40 selected Pioneers - today's

Peter Stuyvesant Ball, Pier Sixty on the
Hudson, New York.
The Peter Stuyvesant Ball is an annual
black tie event, which raises funds for the
NAF (Netherland-America Foundation), and
is the primary source of funds for the NAF's
U.S. Fulbright Fellowship Program. This
year, the Ball was themed on the NY400
celebration: The 28th Peter Stuyvesant Ball
– Commemorating the Henry Hudson
Quadricentennial, Celebrating A Journey of
Inspiration. HRH Princess Margriet and
Prof. mr. Pieter van Vollenhoven attended
the Ball, along with the rest of their family.

Stadsarchief, Amsterdam.
De Quadricentennial-viering in Nederland
werd afgesloten met een historisch
overzicht van de 400-jarige geschiedenis
van de Amsterdamse effectenbeurs, met
onder andere een tentoonstelling van de
eerste aandeelbewijzen en andere originele
stukken van de VOC (Henry Hudson’s
opdrachtgever).

The Holland Society of New York –
Portretten door Geert Snoeijer,
Stadhuis, Amsterdam.
In deze tentoonstelling waren portretten te
zien van nazaten van Nederlanders die
tussen 1623 en 1675 Nederland verlieten
en naar Nieuw Amsterdam vertrokken. De
foto’s werden gemaakt door Geert
Snoeijer.

December 14
Auction NY400 Batavus Bikes, New York.
The NY400 Batavus Bicycles were
generously donated to Recycle-A-Bicycle
(RAB) by the Government of the
Netherlands. Twelve of the 200 orange
bicycles were auctioned at the RAB benefit
event. Recycle-A-Bicycle is a community-
based bike shop and non-profit
organization that provides educational/job
training programs and encourages
environmental stewardship and everyday
bicycle use.

18 – 20 December
Amsterdam - New York Festival, De Balie,
Amsterdam. De Amsterdamse Stichting
Literaire Activiteiten Amsterdam (SLAA)
organiseerde een Amsterdam - New York
Festival. Aan bod kwam o.a. wat de
aantrekkingskracht van beide steden is;
waarom schrijvers en kunstenaars over de
hele wereld deze steden hebben bezongen;
en of New York nog steeds een beetje
Nieuw Amsterdam is, of alle Nederlandse
invloed wellicht al is verdwenen. Een groot
aantal inspirerende gasten uit New York en
Amsterdam liet hun licht schijnen over
deze en gerelateerde zaken.

Chicago, Amsterdam.
Wij Nederlanders en zij ‘buitenlanders’.
Deze tweedeling overheerst de
maatschappelijke discussie in Nederland.
Amerika is groot geworden als
immigratieland. Immigranten horen er snel
bij en worden bovendien aangemoedigd
hun oorspronkelijke identiteit hoog te
houden. Hoe komt dat en wat kan
Nederland daarvan leren? Deze vragen
stonden centraal tijdens Hyphen-Nation:
American Perspectives on Diversity. Het
evenement in BOOM Chicago werd speciaal
voor jongeren georganiseerd.

Observations of a celebration NL & NY
2009, 1K Project Space, Amsterdam.
Een boek met meer dan 250 foto’s en ook
interviews. Eva Pel bezocht New York in het
kader van NY400 en maakte een unieke
fotorapportage op eigen initiatief die het
menselijke verhaal van de viering vertelt.
De foto’s uit het boek werden in
Amsterdam tentoongesteld.

Er is naar gestreefd een zo volledig mogelijk overzicht te geven van de activiteiten die in Nederland en de VS
hebben plaatsgevonden in het kader van NY400. Mogelijk zijn echter een aantal activiteiten aan onze aandacht
ontsnapt, waarvoor onze excuses.

Hudson, Amsterdam en New York
Russell Shorto en Geert Mak
Dit boek werd geschreven door de bekende
historici Geert Mak en Russell Shorto.
1609 vertelt het verhaal van Henry Hudson
en zijn legendarische reis, die hem per
ongeluk naar het huidige Manhattan
bracht.

Het boek is in april 2009 speciaal door de
Volkskrant uitgegeven en is niet in de
winkel te koop. Wel is het boek gratis te

boek van taalkundige Nicoline van der Sijs
