A presentation about Wikimedia Israel, originally presented at the EVA/Minerva annual conference in Jerusalem 2007. Note: I updated the data on July 2008. The original presentation included animation.

5. Wikipedia – the free encyclopedia,
started in January 2001, as a free
online encyclopedia written by its
users.
As of July 2008, Wikipedia had
approximately 11 million articles in
256 languages, including Hebrew and
Arabic.
The Hebrew Wikipedia started in July
2003, and now includes about 80,000
articles.
7. The Wikimedia Foundation was established in June
2003, in Florida, USA, by Jimmy Wales, one of the
founders of Wikipedia. The Wikimedia Foundation is
responsible for managing the various Wikimedia
projects in all different languages.
While the Wikimedia Foundation
promotes the projects and caters
for their infrastructure, each
project has its own community of
users, which maintains the
project and takes decisions about
FOUNDATION
policy.

9. Today, the Wikimedia projects include
several knowledge resources in
different languages, and a repository
of images and media files. All of them
are available for free and under free
licenses, and are the fruit of voluntary
collaborative work.
10. The Wikimedia projects are powered by the
Media-Wiki software, designed especially for
them, but also used for many other purposes.
The software, like the content of the Wikimedia
projects, is available for free under the GFDL
free license.
13. Wikimedia projects in Hebrew have brought
together many enthusiastic contributors, who
now make up a significant community of free
content adherents.
This community is
growing rapidly as
shown in the
increasing number of
participants in the
community meet-ups.
14. Wikimedia Israel was established in June 2007, as an Israeli
nonprofit organization, recognized by the Wikimedia
Foundation as one of its chapters. Other Wikimedia
chapters exist in Argentina, Australia, Austria, the Czech
Republic, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Italy, the
Netherlands, Poland, Russia, Serbia, Sweden, Switzerland,
Taiwan and the United Kingdom.
15. ישראל
Wikimedia Israel set its goal to promote knowledge
and education in Israel by gathering, creating and
distributing free content.
Since its creation, Wikimedia-Israel has been
cooperating with other Israeli organizations that share
its principles, and initiated educational free-content
projects.
16. The Israel Free Image Collection Project
A joint initiative of Wikimedia-Israel, the Israel
Internet Association and the Center for
Educational Technology. It is meant to create a
large pool of digital-format images relating to
the history of Israel, or depicting places of
distinction. The images would be as free of
copyright limitations as possible. The public will
be free to contribute new images, and browse or
copy any of the images stored within.
17. The new Israeli copyright law
Wikimedia Israel has been
closely following the
legislative procedure
aiming to create a new
Israeli copyright law, and managed to
prevent some of aggravations which
were to be introduced in the new law,
particularly the idea to retroactively
prolong the copyright period of
photographs. ישראל
18. The Computer to every Child project
Wikimedia Israel has been cooperating with
the Israeli Coputer to every Child project,
discussing an idea to add an off-line version
of recommended articles from the Hebrew
Wikipedia to the content supplied on the
hard disks of the 6000 computers
distributed annually.
