The Aluminum Transportation Group (ATG) communicates the benefits of aluminum in transportation applications to vehicle manufacturers, policymakers, and the public. It conducts research on how aluminum improves vehicle safety, performance, and environmental friendliness. The ATG also promotes the use of aluminum in commercial vehicles by highlighting how it can increase payload, lower costs, boost fuel efficiency, and reduce emissions. The group consists of six member companies that produce aluminum for the automotive and transportation industries.
1. About the ATG
The Aluminum Association’s Aluminum Transportation Group (ATG) communicates the
benefits of aluminum in transportation applications to help accelerate its penetration
through research programs and related outreach activities. Our mission is to serve
member companies and act as a central resource for vehicle manufacturers, policy-
makers, the news media and the public on transportation aluminum issues.
The Aluminum Advantage
As the issues of vehicle safety and fuel economy become more important to the au-
tomotive industry and their customers, auto aluminum will continue to play a vital role
in the design and engineering of cars and light trucks. The ATG continues to promote
research and programs that will highlight the positive automotive safety, enhanced ve-
hicle performance, environmentally-friendly benefits and increasing growth of automo-
tive aluminum.
Stakeholders in the commercial vehicle industry also are facing several challenges
today from rising energy costs, a weak economy and the growing concern over
greenhouse gas emissions. As federal mandates continue to add weight to heavy-duty
vehicles, there has never been a better time for manufacturers, fleet and owner-op-
erators, shippers and legislators to begin exploring the options that alternative mate-
rial choices offer. The ATG has expanded its mission to include commercial vehicles
to help communicate the benefits lightweighting with aluminum offers the industry,
including the ability to increase payload capacity; lower maintenance costs; reduce
fuel consumption; reduce greenhouse gas emissions; improve durability and corrosion
resistance; and produce a higher resale value.
