The International Society of Breast Pathology, commonly
known as the ISBP, arose from an invitation printed in The
Breast Journal in the spring of 1997. Extended to
professionals in the field of breast pathology and
supplemented with individually selected personal
invitations, the announcement intended to gauge interest
in a pathology-focused breast medicine society.

3. Widespread support led to the society's first meeting in
September of the same year.
The success of this first gathering led to an organizational
meeting held the following spring at The United States and
Canadian Academy of Pathology. Again a success, this
gathering welcomed the ISBP as an official organization.
The meeting also served to determine the organization's
common areas of focus. These included the role of the
pathologist in medicine and the process of second
opinions and confirmations, as well as issues surrounding
diagnosis, biomarker identification, and other pathology
processes.

4. Today, the organization continues to
advocate for professional standards in breast
pathology and the advancement of
knowledge about breast disease
