“The Level 2 course was fantastic for our
volunteers. It improved their confidence and
skill level …they are now on the coaching
pathway to enable them to get some paid
work. My volunteers felt comfortable on the
course and spoke highly of the course tutor.
The tutor was highly engaging and
motivating.”

What Our Learners Say…
“Just wanted to say a huge thank
you for this week, I have “Learnt a lot, coached a lot, had
thoroughly enjoyed myself and great fun.”
learnt so much! It showed at the
session tonight that we have all Josh - University of Wales,
benefitted from this week and are Newport
all an awful lot more confident
when coaching.”

Natalie – University of Cumbria

“I have learnt about different coaching techniques, learning styles
and a variety of sports…I thought the course was going to be scary
and a lot of pressure. My biggest challenge was the assessment as I
had to coach young people from the community who were a bit
older than me. Now I have done it my confidence has grown so
much and I want say thanks to StreetGames.”

Thomas – Duffryn Community Project
What the industry says…

“The approach the StreetGames team
“The insight and quality of training that the Doorstep took with the delivery of Doorstep Sports
Sport Coaching Programme has provided to our regional and Multi-skills Level 2 was excellent.
development team has helped us rethink the way in Tutor support, pastoral care and specialist
which we train young people ourselves as well as in the delivery enabled a real course delivered in
design of our Street Golf workshop that is currently a real situation with young people.”
being piloted in 20 Doorstep projects.”
Rus Smith
Brendon Pyle Community and Sports Development
Development Manager, Golf Foundation Manager, George Salter Academy

“I have been to visit and provide feedback on the quality of the tutor delivery and assessment and
have been able to report that they are an example of good practice in coach education. The tutors
are all well-attuned to the needs of the learners that are attending the course. Their ability to deal
with a diverse range of learner needs is extremely impressive. In particular, they have a natural
empathy for encouraging and supporting learners that had previous negative experiences of
mainstream compulsory education and in some cases had dropped out before the age of 16.

Andy Grant – Coach Education Adviser – Sports Coach UK

My biggest challenge was the assessment as I had to coach young people from the community who were a bit older than me. Now I have done it my confidence has grown so much and I want say thanks to StreetGames.” Thomas – Duffryn Community Project
• 9. What the industry says… “The approach the StreetGames team “The insight and quality of training that the Doorstep took with the delivery of Doorstep Sports Sport Coaching Programme has provided to our regional and Multi-skills Level 2 was excellent. development team has helped us rethink the way in Tutor support, pastoral care and specialist which we train young people ourselves as well as in the delivery enabled a real course delivered in design of our Street Golf workshop that is currently a real situation with young people.” being piloted in 20 Doorstep projects.” Rus Smith Brendon Pyle Community and Sports Development Development Manager, Golf Foundation Manager, George Salter Academy “I have been to visit and provide feedback on the quality of the tutor delivery and assessment and have been able to report that they are an example of good practice in coach education. The tutors are all well-attuned to the needs of the learners that are attending the course. Their ability to deal with a diverse range of learner needs is extremely impressive. In particular, they have a natural empathy for encouraging and supporting learners that had previous negative experiences of mainstream compulsory education and in some cases had dropped out before the age of 16. 1. Morning everyone, I am Justyn Price and I look after the StreetGames Training Academy. The StreetGames Training Academy provides useful workshops and courses for doorstep sport leaders and participants. It will also provides opportunities for mainstream sport’s agencies to learn about working with our target market. The Training Academy offer to Doorstep Sport participants is all about making it easy to learn. Our suite of learning opportunities supports young people and community leaders to recognise their existing strengths and find engaging approaches to gain new skills. The commitment of the Training Academy to fit training to communities, not communities into training, is underpinned by a vision to assist young person to change their lives and maximise their potential. The StreetGames Training Academy: Researches, Innovates & Empowers.
2. We Lead & We FollowWe follow: the courses offered by the Training Academy are determined by our annual Training Needs Analysis and other forms of consultation, such our fieldwork team’s face to face support to Doorstep Sport Clubs. We lead: new learning materials are developed as a result of our research function, for which the Training Academy is an essential platform and mouthpiece. A good example of this would be are new Engaging Women & Girls Workshops, which shares the latest insight from our Us Girls programme. The workshop explains the sporting needs of young women and girls, and defines the techniques for delivering successful sports programmes for young women. The workshop covers what works to both engage and retain female participants and includes case studies from projects that are successfully engaging females.
3. The Training Academy courses are subsidised by Coke, Sport England, Sport Wales, Communities 1st and the football pools. The Co-operative also provide investment to deliver volunteer specific training.Doorstep Sport WorkshopsSelection of three hour workshops designed to provide those working in community sport with the skills specific to delivering doorstep sport in disadvantaged communities.Sport-specific WorkshopsStreetGames has collaborated NGBs to produce a range of Activator workshops. These workshops provide existing community sports and youth workers with the skills to introduce new activities to the groups they work with. This workshops take a game based approach to informal coach education. The onset of Doorstep Sport Clubs provided the challenge for coaches to gain a number recognised technical coaching qualifications in a time and cost efficient manner. In partnership with Sports Coach UK, StreetGames identified the best response to these challenges would take the form a Level 2 Doorstep Sport Coaching Certificate. The certificate comprises the Level 2 Principles & Preparation for Coaching Sport & Level 2 Award in Multi-Skill Development; both of these qualifications are tutored and assessed in the context of the doorstep sport. On successful completion learning can progress to abbreviated level 1 & 2 sport specific courses.
4. StreetGames has assembled a high quality tutor base that has completed the industry standard Level 3 Certificate in Preparing to Teach Lifelong Learning Sector (PTLLS). Our tutors are always prepared with alternative approaches to teaching and assessment based on the needs of learners. The recurring feedback regarding our tutors is their breadth of experience at delivering within disadvantaged communities and the practical advice and examples which they are able to provide. We are also recognised as leading the coaching industry in our pastoral support for learners during our Level 2 programme.
5. The reason StreetGames decided to teach Multi-skill Development alongside Coaching Principles is because we recognise that many young people for various reasons miss out on the building blocks of moving well during their early years, this then limits their ability to fulfil their sporting potential, and can impact on their commitment to stay with sport and participate throughout their life. Through doorstep sport activity skilled coaches can provide fun, game related activities in the right place, at the right time and most importantly in the right style support young people to develop physical literacy, movement skills, sports skills and game understanding.
6. Although StreetGames has entered the world of formal coach education, we have not lost sight of the fact that all theory requires application on a freezing night in December. The Training Academy helps to support play, youth, community and sports workers to harness their passion to help young people fulfil their potential and give practical tips which provide development outcomes in the most relaxed of sessions. Here are a couple of examples of sessions I have worked with Doorsteps Coaches to deliver across a range of sports. The next couple of minutes are based on the how the Training Academy approach can support projects who are planning linked multi-sport sessions in their community.
7. As you will all know the relationship between frontline staff and participants is priceless. The Training Academy curriculum looks to provide useful tools for workers to hang a series of sessions on. An example of this is the 5Cs.This framework provides flexibility in Doorstep Sport sessions which really important to participants. However, coaches can also track sporting and/or personal development outcomes for young people. For example: a group of sessions in a Multi-sport programme could be grouped around the theme of creativity. The weekly sessions could involve some solo and group activities with a final challenge for young people to create a 20 second freestyle routine which is recorded on their phone. This approach could be consistent across Tennis in week 1, Basketball in week 2 or Rugby in week 3 and so on. As well as providing an opportunity to explore the sport free from judgement of others, the young people achieve lots of balls contacts which will ultimately benefit them when playing in a more game scenarios.Having adopted this approach to exploring sport the coach is in a better position to consult with the young people to identify skills and challenges they would like further support to explore over the weeks ahead, and how they would like to divide their time across the sport they have sampled.
8. The feedback from our learners is regularly reviewed and influences are methods of teaching and assessment. In fact the Level 2 pilot we delivered here in Newport in May has had an enormous influence on who we gather portfolio evidence of level 2 candidates and we are in the process of sharing this learning with some NGBS!
9. The StreetGames Training Academy has been recognised by industry experts for their ability to reach into disadvantaged communities and was a finalist for Coaching Intervention of the Year at the 2012 Sports Coach UK Awards. The Training Academy has pioneered innovative techniques for collecting portfolio evidence. Some of the learners in disadvantaged communities struggle with reading and writing and are not comfortable with traditional assessment methods, capturing evidence and learner’s knowledge on flip charts or through discussions and video clips provides liberation for their learning. The Training Academy has also challenged traditional coach education norms by introducing pastoral support staff for learners. Additional tutorials are offered each day of our six-day courses for any learners who wanted to come in early or stay late.
10. Please do come an grab me or Paul Roberts over coffee if you would like further information or visit the training section of the website which has information on all our training offers. Thank you for your time!
