By the way…did you know that people who eat a healthy
breakfast have a 35-40% lower risk of developing metabolic

From managing your time to… your energy?

« The number of hours in a day is fixed,
but the quantity and quality of energy

Reverse lens: «What would the other person say in this conflict?»
Long lens: «How will I view this situation in 6 months?»
Wide lens: «Regardless of the outcome, how can I grow & learn from this?»

We tend to be unproductive 2 hours a day!

Schedule important activities for the right time of the day – when
you work best and are most productive…your prime time.

Optimize your time and energy by identifying your “prime time”.
Minimize interruptions and distractions during this time to boost
  your productivity.

First thing in the morning – minds are fresh and we can
       get work done more effectively.

Some of us prefer diving into priority work mid-day when
our momentum is at its highest.

End of the day - ideas and concepts have become clear
       and we’re ready to go!

                                                                       12
Top contributors to productivity

Can you guess the top three productivity
   boosters at work….?

Appreciation and recognition demonstrated by colleagues

               Praise from management

                           Effective time management

                    Question for the audience:
How do you feel when a colleague says “thank you”, or
when your manager praises you during a meeting?

                                                               13
Target your productivity
Eat smartly – start the day with a healthy breakfast and feed your brain
  at lunch and dinner!

Prioritize – use what works (lists, etc.). Work backwards from goals, to
milestones, to tasks so that work is broken down into smaller pieces.

Stop multi-tasking - it drains your energy and is counter-productive.

Get regular exercise – you’ll have more energy, feel a sense of well-
being and be better able to cope with stress.

Manage your time, avoid distractions - turn off your
phone, email, close your door, work in a quiet area. Check emails 2 or 3
  times daily.

Work in 60-90 minute intervals - take a break…get up, go for a
walk, have a snack, do something different to recharge.

Live your core values - in your daily behavior.

Get a good night’s sleep – as of the age of 18 we should ideally sleep
between 7½ and 9 hours per night. (1) Source: http://www.helpguide.org/life/sleeping.htm

Networking…
   it’s all about building relationships
Networking use increases day by day. Currently the estimated number of social
network users worldwide is over 1.2 billion. (1)

Nearly 20% of overall time spent online is spent on social networking sites. (2)

  Networking platforms
Networking doesn’t only happen at business events. Think about how many times
have you’ve waited in line somewhere or you attended a social occasion, alumni
service/event, career fair, connected to a discussion board…. start networking!

  Networking DOs…
Be prepared Be targeted Be professional Listen, listen, listen!
Be dedicated Be active Specify next step

      Networking DON’Ts…
Arrive late Bring your CV Be negative
Forget etiquette Get too personal Neglect follow-up

  • 12. We tend to be unproductive 2 hours a day! Schedule important activities for the right time of the day – when you work best and are most productive…your prime time. Optimize your time and energy by identifying your “prime time”. Minimize interruptions and distractions during this time to boost your productivity. First thing in the morning – minds are fresh and we can get work done more effectively. Some of us prefer diving into priority work mid-day when our momentum is at its highest. End of the day - ideas and concepts have become clear and we’re ready to go! 12
  • 13. Top contributors to productivity Can you guess the top three productivity boosters at work….? Appreciation and recognition demonstrated by colleagues Praise from management Effective time management Question for the audience: How do you feel when a colleague says “thank you”, or when your manager praises you during a meeting? 13
  • 14. Target your productivity Eat smartly – start the day with a healthy breakfast and feed your brain at lunch and dinner! Prioritize – use what works (lists, etc.). Work backwards from goals, to milestones, to tasks so that work is broken down into smaller pieces. Stop multi-tasking - it drains your energy and is counter-productive. Get regular exercise – you’ll have more energy, feel a sense of well- being and be better able to cope with stress. Manage your time, avoid distractions - turn off your phone, email, close your door, work in a quiet area. Check emails 2 or 3 times daily. Work in 60-90 minute intervals - take a break…get up, go for a walk, have a snack, do something different to recharge. Live your core values - in your daily behavior. Get a good night’s sleep – as of the age of 18 we should ideally sleep between 7½ and 9 hours per night. (1) Source: http://www.helpguide.org/life/sleeping.htm (1) 14

  1. KBBSo, exploring the link between energy and effectiveness….If you’re willing to share with us, please raise your hand if you have breakfast every morning. And when I say every morning, I don’t mean only on Sunday mornings, but rather every morning! Raise your hand! Don’t be shy!did you know that people who eat a healthy breakfast have a 35-40% lower risk of developing metabolic syndrome, such as high cholesterol, hypertension, diabetes…?!
  2. KBBCan weoptimize how we manage our time by managingourenergy..? Do yousometimesfeelthatyou are you a victim of energy drains…?Physical, mental and emotional energy is the fuel that drives our ability to act, think and be creative. If your energy is low or you feel drained, you’re limiting these capacities. To have a sense of satisfaction and balance in your life, to increase the things that stimulate your energy, it’s vital to eliminate energy drains. We are humanbeings, not computers. However, in this world of digital communications, 24/7 news cylces, all kinds of electronic gadgets, demandingour constant attention, wecanoftenbeleftthinking…. «wheredid the time go?» or «I have no energy». It’s important to make room for winding down times - to refuel via different types of energy sources.Think about the people, circumstances or activitiesthat drain yourenergy. What are the thingsthatyouwouldlike to do or have been planning to do? Look atwhichenergy drains youcaneliminate and startdoingthis. The more youdevote time to regain control of yourenergydrainers, the more youwillbeaware of whatisreally important to you and what are the thingsthatbringyou positive effects.
  3. KBBLet’s imagine for a second thatyour body islike a car – willitwork if youdon’tfillitwithgas, electricity, etc.? So….your body is the same – itneedsenergy. Ensure a healthydietatregularintervals in the day. Didyou know thatdehydrationis an energy drainer? Weshouldideally drink 8-10 glasses of water during the day.Think DIET, EXCERCISE AND REST.It’s important to takeregular breaks during the workingday as youwouldprobablyduring a weekend day. Atyour desk, do a slow breathingexercise to bringyoucalm and relaxation. Breath in throughyournosecounting to 3 and breath out throughyourmouthcounting to 6. How about going for a briskwalkat lunch time?Try hard to draw the line whenyou stop working – refuelthen by focussing on home, sports, your hobbies, family, etc.
  4. KBBEmotional energy is as important as any other energy source! Letting certain things, people, behaviors get to you can seriously put a dent into your emotional energy and make you feel slow-to-get-going, lacking self confidence, and sometimes even sad.In conflictual interpersonal situations, instead of taking something personally or feel really tense, think of the best way to resolve the situation. Seek clarity, do your best to engage dialogue and then move on!As an example, being a good friend doesn’t mean always being there for someone even if they’re never there for you. If you feel that your energy is being sucked away by someone, take some time to evaluate what this friendship actually brings you.How many of us worry about thingswe have no control over…? Worrying drains ourenergy and takesawayour focus – set time aside to focus on a specificconcern to see if thereisanythingyoucan do about it. If there’snothingyoucan do, thentry to focus energy on thingsyouhave impact on.What makes you feel self-assured, full of hope, inspired?Refuelyouremotionalenergy by being positive and thinkingpositively. Express youremotions, plan projects, appreciate good things and people in your life and don’tforget to congratulateyourself and otherswhodeserveit!
  5. KBBBrain cells require twice the energy of other cells for proper functioning.(1) The word “breakfast” is exactly that…breaking the fast after a night’s sleep. When you eat breakfast, preferably made up of whole grains, lean protein, a banana, you’re refueling your brain. If you’re not doing this, it’s no wonder you continue to feel tired a lack of motivation during the day….until you give your brain some energy! When you make decisions, you’re burning calories and therefore, energy. Try to take decisions at the time of day when your energy level is at its highest.Don’tforget to giveyourbrain a break – like a computer, italso has its maximum storagecapacity!Save yourenergy by organizingyourself. Make a list of thingsyouneed to attend to, maintain an up-to-date agenda. This wayyou focus yourenergy on the objectives, not on trying to rememberwhat are the differentthingsyouneed to do.(1)http://www.spryliving.com/articles/whats-causing-your-bodys-energy-crisis/
  6. KBBIt’s important to take the time to reflect on what we want out of our life. What’s important for us – what are our values and how do we actually live them…? Are we surrounding ourselves with people who we appreciate and cherish? Are we open to asking for advice, support, guidance? If one tries to do everything alone it’s like a juggler who’s hoping he/she can keep it up relentlessly and won’t let the “ball” drop. Plug into people around you who can be a source of energy and inspiration and return the favor.Often leading such busy lives, we tend to neglect what makes us feel joyful and what things makes us feel stressed, anxious, angry, etc.Why not keep a sort of daily journal in which you note things that made you feel stressed and what you did about it. Then, as important, note things that made you feel happy or satisfied, and why. This is a good way of monitoring your energy drainers and boosters.Devote some time to establish your personal boundaries and core life values and stick to them. It’syour life, sowhy not put into place a plan to live it in the wayyouwouldideallylike to live it.
  7. ALOIn conclusion to refuel our personal energy we need to:recognize the repercussions (cost and impact) of energy-depleting behaviours;take responsibility for changing them; andBuild our energy sources by establishing some of the rituals presented before.
  8. ALONow let’s have a look at the research findings on energy and productivity of our partner in the UK Chiumento. Here is how lifestyle impacts on productivity:Those who …- eat a breakfast;- exercise regularly;- and have a good night’s sleep.are the most productive! As you can see the simplest things are the most efficient.
  9. KBBHow many of youfeel more or less productive, depending on the time of day?As individuals, wefunctiondifferently and thismeanswe are potentially more productive atdifferent times of the day.Take a minute to think about whenyou are mostlikely to be full of energy, productive, ready to go….If youcan manage yourday in a waythatpermitsyou to handle important or complexthings to do duringyour prime time, you’llprobably notice an improvement in yourproductivity, maybe in yourdecisions and choices as well, but especiallyyoumayexperience a sense of personalsatisfacation in what and how you do things.
  10. KBBLet’s now look at what can contribute to our productivity.Let me ask you the question…how do you feel when a colleague says “thank you”, or when your manager praises you during a meeting?......
  11. KBBWhat are some specific things that could help in targeting our productivity?Let’s take a look at some pointers that, if taken into consideration, can really help to achieve our productivity objectives.
  12. ALOOur statistics confirm that networking remains the privileged way to find a job.But it is interesting to notice that the percentage of search companies is growing and in my view it will continue to grow as more and more recruiters screen LinkedIn to identify profiles.Ads and job boards come in 3rd position and that means it is still worth looking at them, but without focusing too much time.
  13. KBBLet’s talk about networking. It is a skillthatyoucandevelopwith practice – and no, youdon’t have to be an extrovert to network effectively! Many of us network naturallywithoutnecessarilyrealizingit. Networking means meeting people to broaden the scope of people you know and isespecially a good way to exchange ideas and obtainvaluable information. As youcansee on thisslide, there are some Dos and Dont’s…Do’s…Prepared: introduceyourself and yourcore goals, what information do youneed, hand out your business cards to personswithwhomyoufeeltherecouldbe a possibility to connect or collaborate.Targeted: make a list of all your contacts and attend events.Professional: askyour prospects for advice, not a job. Presentyourselfpositively, and professionally, dress for the occasion.Dedicated: networking shouldbeongoing, trackyour meetings, sendthank-you’s, follow-up.Active: seek out eventswhereyoucanshare in commoninterests and buildfromthere.Listen! thisis a time to learn more about a company, industry, obtainreferrals, sospendhalf of your time listening.Don’ts…Arrive late: add 25% of the time youthinkyou’llneed to be on time. It’sbetter to arrive early and relaxed, thanlate and stressed.Sell: leaveyour CV at home, it’s not an interview!Negative: don’tspeakdisrespectfully or badly about previousemployers or colleaguesEtiquette: dress and actprofessionally.Gettoopersonal: you’re not there to tell your life story or to know about theirs!Neglect: sending a prompt thank-you message and follow-up.
  14. KBB When you find yourself in a networking context it’s important to listen constructively – once the person across from you has finished speaking, ask a good follow-up question based on the information you just heard. This shows you’re concentrated and interested. Here are a few examples of questions that you may find useful in this context…Don’t overwhelm the person you’re speaking with. Ask questions that you feel comfortable with – and that you know you could ask with sincere interest.Life is a 2-way street so don’t forget to give as well. For example, if the person is new in town, ask them how their integration is going, suggest places to go, discuss your sports activities and inquire about theirs; make a connection.
  15. ALOWe have just seen the importance of the hidden job market and of networking in particular. But the point is that you have to define your own self-marketing strategy, combining the different routes in the most effective way according to your objectives. If your prefer to meet people F2F instead of using social networks, fair enough! However, it is really important to not limit your strategy to only one route! So combine the routes and the tools the most appropriate to your needs and to your personality and split your time efficiently. Don’t spend too much time in the visible job market: use alerts or RSS feeds to “push” the job ads on your desktop or your mobile to gain time. And manage your energy to be more powerful in the hidden job market.Keep in mind that you are the CEO of your own company and you must think, act, and plan like a business leader. And your first job is to be head marketer for the brand called YOU. Your brand is all about who you are and what you want to be known for. It is the foundation of your self-marketing strategy and it will allow you to best take advantage of the routes you have identified for your strategy. To start with, key principles: - Be yourself and be sincere.- Rethink the way you see your career: don’t think of yourself as un employee but as an asset to that you own. What do I do that brings value?- Make yourself visible: manage your reputation both online and in real life- Build and manage your network: don’t accept systematically all the invitations you receive on LinkedIn for instance…- Be consistent: balance substance with style. Don't forget that the way you do things is often as important as what you do. Be always professional.
  16. ALOThe first step for building your personal brand is developing your DNA. Find the key words that best describe your personality and expertise. - What is your emotional appeal : the words that others use to describe you- Then elaborate your description : key words that describe your industry, your work and your target audience- in the end determine your function, your USP : the service you offer, what makes you stand out from the crowd Put it all together. Your brand should clearly communicate who you are, should be simple and easy to remember, it should feel inspiring to you.I will illustrate this with the example of Disney: Disney is fun family entertainmentOur digital marketing expert who energizes people is an “idea generator”.
  17. ALONext step. Create your personal branding toolkit. You don’t need to have all the material listed here! Choose the most appropriate ones adapted to your needs and habits.Your toolkit is nurtured by:- your track record- your major achievements – think in terms of STARs (the situation, your task, your action, the result)- your competency profile (that includes your transferable skills and core competencies; evaluate what you do well and what you enjoy doing!- your personal and work valuesWe don’t have the time to review all the material unfortunately but I would like to give you some hints quickly:The business card is your key to networking. It is your micro-CV: it must be focused on your expertise while not limiting your career optionsThe Elevator pitch is also called 2’ commercial. It’s about how to present yourself and highlight your assets in 2’. It will be most helpful to answer the famous question: Tell me about yourself…Choose carefully your e-mail address. What about using un aggregator like flavors.me, tiki’me , about.me to create your personalized home page with your online profiles and CV? On on ehand it looks very professional and on the other hand it i very helpfué o keep contril..your web presence and keep control. With a tool like netvibes you could even add your video CV and RSS feeds!.Regarding Facebook always think twice before publishing anything…
  18. ALOBy the way what does your online brand say about you?Who wants to be Googled???Let’s try to see what comes up….
  19. KBBHere we see a highlight of Suisse Romande’s work place realities…It is competitiveas most employment markets, it is split into 2: visible and hiddenit is mainly dedicated to industrythe neighboring Geneva canton tends to be more service focused and has one of the highest unemployment rates
