England’s most rural county….
In the heart of the East Midlands is a county largely unspoilt by the modern era; a place where sleepy villages nestle amongst
rolling hills and where you can still enjoy traditional village fetes in summer complete with cake competitions, maypole dancing
and Morris Men. In Rutland, good food is a passion and Rutlanders believe in fully supporting our local producers; pick up a copy
of Eat Drink Rutland for the best places to dine and shop for local food. Rutlanders rejoiced when independence was granted from
Leicestershire in 1997; and they’ll proudly share this slice of English idyll with you on your next short break.

Whether you bring the family, come on your own, or in a group, there’s something for
everyone to enjoy. Convenient cafes and ice cream kiosks are dotted around the shore
and a good village pub is never far away!
There are four main car parks around Rutland Water and your daily car park ticket is
valid for all of these. This is what you can find at each:
Sykes Lane is the place for family fun. Home to the Rutland Visitor Centre and gift
shop which has interactive displays on the history of the water and the friendly staff
can advise you on how to get the most out of this magnificent place, plus you can enjoy
a round of mini golf. Also on site is a children’s play area and specific dog walking area.
Whitwell is the place for activities. There are numerous things to have a go at, try your
hand at numerous watersports, rock climbing or get harnessed up for the high ropes
adventure course. If you haven’t got a head for heights, you can hire bicycles here and
also climb aboard the Rutland Belle for a relaxing cruise.
Normanton is the place to see Rutland’s best known landmark. Normanton Church
sits half submerged on the edge of Rutland Water and is now licensed to hold civil
weddings. Normanton also has cycle hire available and is the home to the Fishing
Lodge where you can hire a boat or ask about tuition.
Barnsdale is the place to relax. Here you can sit back and enjoy the rolling landscape.
Plus, to the West of Rutland Water you will find one of the finest nature reserves in
the UK, on the South there is 13 acres of water for sailing and right in the middle is
Hambleton Peninsular which enjoys lovely views of the water.

Walking
Rutland is a wonderful place for walking all year round and each season brings its own
palette of colours to the rolling countryside.
Village walks
There are a range of enjoyable circular walks through some of the county’s
prettiest villages, most of which start and finish at a great village pub.
Each leaflet has two circular walks to choose from in the villages of Exton,
Braunston, Empingham, Ryhall and Wing.
The Oakham Heritage Trail leaflet is also available to highlight the many buildings
of historical interest in Rutland’s county town.
Five village walking leaflets are available to view and order for free

Challenging walks
If you’re feeling fit, try the longest walk available – the recently updated Rutland
Round is a well known 65 mile circular walking route. It can be broken down into
smaller sections and is available to purchase from the Visitor Centre at Sykes Lane.
A number of national footpaths also cross through the county, such as The Hereward
Way and The Jurassic Way. Oakham is the finishing point for The Viking Way, a 147
mile footpath which starts near the Humber Bridge in North Lincolnshire, plus The
Macmillan Way meanders through Rutland on its way to Dorset.
Don’t Miss Rutland Walking & Cycling Festival:
Sunday 18th May to Saturday 21st May 2014
Join in the variety of led walks and cycle rides around England’s
most rural county.
Cycling
One of the most exhilarating ways to explore Rutland is by bike, and there are routes
to suit everyone, whether you cycle seriously or purely for pleasure.
Around the county
The winding country lanes found throughout Rutland wrap themselves around
quiet, unspoilt villages; and there is invariably a cosy pub or quaint tea shop in
which to stop off en-route for refreshments.
Around Rutland Water
Rutland Water is a haven for cyclists of all ages and abilities. The cycle friendly tracks
around the shoreline are generally level and easy to negotiate and the views of
the reservoir and beyond are amazing. The kiosks and cafes dotted around are the
perfect place to stop off for ice creams and snacks on the way round.
Cycle Hire
Rutland Cycling is the primary cycle hire provider in Rutland and has two convenient
cycle hire depots at Rutland Water, both open 7 days a week.
There will also be more cycle hubs appearing around Rutland in 2014, plus there is a
cycle friendly bus to take you to different sections.

horses; Rutland County Museum was
once the home of the Rutland Fencible

it comes to the type of course to play.
Luffenham Heath is widely known as one of the finest and most challenging heathland
courses in the Midlands and will host the Regional Qualifying for the 2013 - 2017
Open Championships. In addition to the fine golf on offer, nature flourishes here, with
the whole golf course being declared a site of special scientific interest.
Greetham Valley offers 3 challenging courses to choose from, in addition to a
floodlit driving range, accommodation and many other facilities onsite. The two
18 hole courses (Lakes and Valley’s) provide a stern test, whilst the 9 hole Par 3 is
perfect for honing your short game.
The Stapleford Park Championship golf course is not only challenging but it is also
amongst the finest luxury golf courses in the Midlands and has hosted the PGA
European Seniors Tour and the ISPS Handa Senior Masters.

DISCOVER
The arts are thriving in Rutland; whenever you come to visit there will be something going on
– whether you prefer fine art, live music, Shakespeare or comedy, you’ll find it all here…
Art Galleries
There are many art galleries to
enjoy in the towns of Oakham
and Uppingham - some pieces are
worth many thousands of pounds.
There’s an active arts community
in Rutland who regularly hold a
rolling programme of exhibitions
in various locations around the
county, such as the Victoria Hall
in Oakham, so look out for these
during your stay.
Theatres
Rutland offers a choice of indoor and outdoor theatres! The widely renowned
Tolethorpe Hall, home of the much loved Stamford Shakespeare Company, offers
magical performances of Shakespearean classics and family favourites in an open-air
setting, with all the comfort of an indoor theatre. The magic of Tolethorpe begins
when you enter the grounds, whether you enjoy a picnic on the lawn or meal in one
of the elegant restaurants, it is worth arriving in good time to soak in the atmosphere,
before being seated beneath an all-weather canopy to enjoy an enchanting
performance on a woodland stage. The three plays for 2014 are As You Like It, The
Taming of the Shrew and Alice in Wonderland & Through the looking
Glass. Or if you prefer a more traditional theatre experience head to
Uppingham Theatre, which has built an enviable reputation for the quality
of its live entertainment. From West End shows to top class symphony orchestras
and amazing jazz performances, its events diary is packed all year round.
Did you know: The chancel  of St Andrews Church in  Lyddington, was built with
acoustic pots placed in recesses near the tops of the walls in the early 14th century.
This amplifies the sound providing splendid acoustics, making it the perfect home
for Music in Lyddington, who provide fine music in a regular series of high quality
concerts for all to enjoy.
Historic Houses
There are many interesting
buildings in and around Rutland;
making it a great base for
exploring.
Belton House, Belvoir Castle,
Burghley House, Rockingham
Castle and Grimsthorpe Castle
are all within a short drive.
Peterborough Cathedral is just
30 minutes away. And why not
discover some of the beautiful
historic buildings in Rutland itself -

the pinnacle of culinary expertise.
Hambleton Hall has held its Michelin

Britain’s finest country house hotels,
with a spectacular lakeside setting it is a
haven for gourmets and wine lovers.
The 2014 Good Pub Guide praises The

summer enjoy a seasonal drink or two
outside and in winter take your place in

There’s an active arts community in Rutland who regularly hold a rolling programme of exhibitions in various locations around the county, such as the Victoria Hall in Oakham, so look out for these during your stay. Theatres Rutland offers a choice of indoor and outdoor theatres! The widely renowned Tolethorpe Hall, home of the much loved Stamford Shakespeare Company, offers magical performances of Shakespearean classics and family favourites in an open-air setting, with all the comfort of an indoor theatre. The magic of Tolethorpe begins when you enter the grounds, whether you enjoy a picnic on the lawn or meal in one of the elegant restaurants, it is worth arriving in good time to soak in the atmosphere, before being seated beneath an all-weather canopy to enjoy an enchanting performance on a woodland stage. The three plays for 2014 are As You Like It, The Taming of the Shrew and Alice in Wonderland & Through the looking Glass. Or if you prefer a more traditional theatre experience head to Uppingham Theatre, which has built an enviable reputation for the quality of its live entertainment. From West End shows to top class symphony orchestras and amazing jazz performances, its events diary is packed all year round. Did you know: The chancel  of St Andrews Church in  Lyddington, was built with acoustic pots placed in recesses near the tops of the walls in the early 14th century. This amplifies the sound providing splendid acoustics, making it the perfect home for Music in Lyddington, who provide fine music in a regular series of high quality concerts for all to enjoy. Historic Houses There are many interesting buildings in and around Rutland; making it a great base for exploring. Belton House, Belvoir Castle, Burghley House, Rockingham Castle and Grimsthorpe Castle are all within a short drive. Peterborough Cathedral is just 30 minutes away.
