A bit of a different format for BathCamp in June. We’ll be cage fighting. No. Actually, it’s a sort of follow on from our previous BathCamp – a comparison of as many CMS systems as we can get people to talk about. Obviously any comparison of CMS system is heavily caveated with an “it depends…” but nonetheless we think it’ll be interesting to hear from people talking about the good, the bad and the ugly of the systems they use. The format of the talks will be “5 things I love about this CMS and 5 things I hate”, followed by time for questions and general CMS-like banter. We’ve got the following lined up: WordPress Drupal Expression Engine Plone PyroCMS Perch Umbraco Defacto

Are you managing Windows? Longtime Windows system admin? Do you enjoy long walks on the beach thinking about how it would be awesome to have Linux-style package management on Windows? Well you, sir or madam, are in luck! Chocolatey will help you get jiggy with it and get your Puppet package management in much the same way that you already enjoy with other platforms. During this talk we will go over how you can be successful hooking Chocolatey into Puppet, creating your own packages, and setting up an internal package repository. As developers we deal with an ever-changing and always growing industry, with new and exciting ways of being able to deliver awesome projects keeping up with any one single stream is always something a developer needs to keep on top of. From backend, frontend and ops, the opportunities to build cool things within each stream is endless. From Lua, Ruby and Node we can look at the similarities between some of the core languages and how you can use the knowledge of one to build into another, learning at least the fundamental behaviour within a stream language or bridging into a new stream. In this talk, I will share my experience of working on projects for some big name companies as a developer and why being polyglot was an important part of being able to deliver scalable projects on time and for being able to manage a team of developers for busy and thriving digital agencies.

This report explores the untapped e-commerce revenue opportunity for software developers, both those working on mobile apps and Internet of Things (IoT) projects. Case studies – from Amazon to Zalando – show how connected devices, frictionless discovery and payment are changing e- commerce. This leads to a prediction of the e-commerce industry future which will be structurally disrupted, as IoT extends e-commerce affiliate schemes beyond websites, mobile, and apps, onto any physical surface. PHP has been around for many years and has been used any number of ways and in projects large and small, one of its little known and seldom used functions is in that of raw audio generation and output. In a show of its extreme versatility for the awesomeness that is PHP, we are going to hear what php code can sound like helping push one of the little known and often rarely used functions to create music from elegant symphonies to some of the latest tunes. We will also hear what code from some of the more well known platforms sounds like.

Embeddable widgets have proliferated the web since JavaScript was born in the mid-nineties, and even before. Since the days of CGI counters, we have come a long way, with companies like Intercom and Stripe providing drop-in code to render components that provide rich and interactive experiences within customers’ existing sites. At Tito, we have provided an embeddable widget since early on. When it came to rewriting it, we wanted to keep the things that made it great: a simple drop-in native-like web component that was easy to customise with CSS and integrate with JavaScript hooks. Our secondary goals were higher level. We wanted an easy to use codebase, and a widget that could be the primary code that we used on our own checkout pages. We also wanted to hook in to the modern ecosystem of JavaScript package managers, bundlers and modules. This talk will explore the process of upgrading an older widget to a modern codebase and framework, some of the advantages to be gained, and some of the challenges faced.

As CTO of a rapid growth FinTech one of my biggest challenges is rebuilding the platform to scale elastically plus still allowing for the rapid development and integration of core platform functionality. Even for fast prototyping and design Openresty allows for the quick integration for mobile and web services that can integrate with almost any database or stateless program logic allowing for faster than normal deployment and event geo based load balancing. Utilising NGINX ill show some of the ways i am overcoming some of the challenges by building a developer focused api platform that will allow the quick and easy deployment of new services while still maintaining the functionality needed by modern REST API design techniques. Also we will be looking at some of the additional functionality available to the Openresty suite including Machine Learning (which can be used for API error handling), QR code handling and API tempting and authentication. http://au.apidays.io/abstracts.html#2747a1f1

The internet of things industry has been booming for a while now and the number of IoT devices surpassed the number of people on the planet in 2008 bringing with it a number of emerging technology opportunities. For Developer, retailers and customers other than offering a form of cheap and easy to scale hardware it allows buyer and seller to connect in ways that they could not have done so previously. One thing i have taken through a number of countries is a Arduino Yun powered IoT commerce printer which, when a order on a website is received, will automatically print a receipt out thus offering a merchant a very inexpensive way to automatically receive real world notifications when orders have been placed. In a user case example this means that the likes of a restaurant can accept payment for coffee and other items on a website and have a receipt print out and be for-filled very easily and very quickly and all for under $120 USD. Solutions like this encourage not only growth within the industry but help in the facilitation of creating new ways for customers to transact but id like to hear some more thoughts on even if IoT Commerce is something that has a place not only in Tech industry circles but within business

Music is a great way to capture the hearts minds and imagination of the young and old but what if we created new ways to interact with technology around us. Using Javascript i will create some live music using nothing but code and a Macbook air to create a musical symphony the likes of which that hasn't been seen since the onset of the technical age. Also in this session i will look at how we can take an everyday item, like a PayPal Here, to connect via some computer generated music to create a symphonic music and light show that will be the talk of the town, interacting via our API's in a whole new way.

Holographic interfaces are a great way to interact with the physical world in ways that users understand. We are often are restricted to dealing with our digital universe with flat 2 dimensional screen or VR interfaces. In this session i am going to talk about how we can create an interactive holographic display which is perfect to be used in a interactive commerce context allowing users to experience new ways to checkout and interact with the digital space. Using braintree we can also create a payment vault in the Holographic space to allow a much faster and seamless checkout experience for the user.

The presentation explores the development and application of artificial intelligence (AI) from its inception to its current status in the modern world. The term "artificial intelligence" was first coined by John McCarthy in 1956 to describe efforts to develop computer programs capable of performing tasks that typically require human intelligence. This concept was first introduced at a conference held at Dartmouth College, where programs demonstrated capabilities such as playing chess, proving theorems, and interpreting texts. In the early stages, Alan Turing contributed to the field by defining intelligence as the ability of a being to respond to certain questions intelligently, proposing what is now known as the Turing Test to evaluate the presence of intelligent behavior in machines. As the decades progressed, AI evolved significantly. The 1980s focused on machine learning, teaching computers to learn from data, leading to the development of models that could improve their performance based on their experiences. The 1990s and 2000s saw further advances in algorithms and computational power, which allowed for more sophisticated data analysis techniques, including data mining. By the 2010s, the proliferation of big data and the refinement of deep learning techniques enabled AI to become mainstream. Notable milestones included the success of Google's AlphaGo and advancements in autonomous vehicles by companies like Tesla and Waymo. A major theme of the presentation is the application of generative AI, which has been used for tasks such as natural language text generation, translation, and question answering. Generative AI uses large datasets to train models that can then produce new, coherent pieces of text or other media. The presentation also discusses the ethical implications and the need for regulation in AI, highlighting issues such as privacy, bias, and the potential for misuse. These concerns have prompted calls for comprehensive regulations to ensure the safe and equitable use of AI technologies. Artificial intelligence has also played a significant role in healthcare, particularly highlighted during the COVID-19 pandemic, where it was used in drug discovery, vaccine development, and analyzing the spread of the virus. The capabilities of AI in healthcare are vast, ranging from medical diagnostics to personalized medicine, demonstrating the technology's potential to revolutionize fields beyond just technical or consumer applications. In conclusion, AI continues to be a rapidly evolving field with significant implications for various aspects of society. The development from theoretical concepts to real-world applications illustrates both the potential benefits and the challenges that come with integrating advanced technologies into everyday life. The ongoing discussion about AI ethics and regulation underscores the importance of managing these technologies responsibly to maximize their their benefits while minimizing potential harms.

Created by Mozilla Research in 2012 and now part of Linux Foundation Europe, the Servo project is an experimental rendering engine written in Rust. It combines memory safety and concurrency to create an independent, modular, and embeddable rendering engine that adheres to web standards. Stewardship of Servo moved from Mozilla Research to the Linux Foundation in 2020, where its mission remains unchanged. After some slow years, in 2023 there has been renewed activity on the project, with a roadmap now focused on improving the engine’s CSS 2 conformance, exploring Android support, and making Servo a practical embeddable rendering engine. In this presentation, Rakhi Sharma reviews the status of the project, our recent developments in 2023, our collaboration with Tauri to make Servo an easy-to-use embeddable rendering engine, and our plans for the future to make Servo an alternative web rendering engine for the embedded devices industry.
