2. WHAT IS RAIN
WATERHARVESTING
 Rainwater Harvesting is a technology utilized for collecting
and storing rainwater from rooftops, land surfaces or road
surfaces using simple techniques such as barrels, tanks and
cistern method.
 Harvested rainwater is a renewable source of clean water that
is ideal for domestic and agricultural uses as a supplementary
source.

Aims and Objectives
 To develop a small scale project that provides the
outstanding practice for energy efficiency
measures and rain water harvesting.
 To measure the water savings from the rain water
harvesting.
 Develop the control system that assess the quality
and monitoring the volume of harvested water.
 Optimizing the model for a detailed financial
analysis (low cost) with emphasis on domestic
installation.

RAINWATER HARVESTING
 Estimated cost benefit for rainwater harvesting

 In the domestic scenario, rainwater harvesting has
a vital role to play in reducing mains demand.
 Rainwater can, depending upon demand for toilet
use, substitute between 37-100% of mains water
for toilet flushing facilities. This in turn leads to an
overall saving of between 19-33% curtailment in
demand for mains water.

10. CONCLUSIONS
 Rainwater harvesting is a viable water conservation
measure that has the potential to accord to the
sustainability of raw water sources and to the viability of
water treatment plants.
 Harvested rainwater has potential to provide augmented
source to treated mains water for non-potable uses.
 There is need to be ample aid in the forms of grants or
other schemes from the government to promote the
installation of rainwater harvesting systems in Ireland.
 The potential benefits of rainwater harvesting are not
widely apprehended and this should be addressed
through educational awareness programmes.

11. BENEFITS OF RWH SYSTEM
 Notably reduces water charges and water utility
expenditures.
 Following installation of rainwater harvesting
system it is completely free to use and requires
little or no maintenance.
 Rainwater systems can easily be installed into
premises normally within 48 hours at site.
 Rainwater is an inevitable and pure form of water.
 Curtail demand on municipal water supply.
