Cerebral Palsy is a movement disorder. CP is also known as ‘static encephalopathy.’ It is caused by brain damage that occurs before, during, or just after birth. A person with CP is often also affected by other conditions caused by brain damage, such as motor skills.
In the United States, about 2-3 children per 1000 have Cerebral Palsy. As many as 1,000,000 people of all ages are affected, both male and female.
Prevention: mother having good nutrition, no smoking, alcohol or drug use, try to prevent head injury by using all safety equipment while the child is in the car or riding a bike.10% to 20% of children with CP acquire if after birth, caused by brain damage.
occurs in the cerebral cortex‘Spastic’ means ‘stiff’ and this form of cerebral palsy stiffens muscles and decreases the range of movement in joints.refers to the increased tone, or tension, in a muscle
caused by damage to the cerebellumaffects coordination of movement.affects all four limbs and the trunkcharacterized by poor or low muscle tone
Damage to the basal ganglia, located in the midbrain
10% of cerebral palsy child fall in this category.tight musle tone of spastic cerebral palsy and involuntary movements. The most common mixed are spasticity and athetoid movements. Any one combination is also possible. This is a mixture of different types of cerebral palsy. A common combination is spastic and athetoid.
severity of the brain damage suffered was only significant enough to cause slight impairment. The symptoms of mild cerebral palsy are subtler and not easily recognizable. In cases of mild cerebral palsy, symptoms are not as disruptive, and usually not apparent to the naked eye. Sometimes parents and doctors are less likely to realize that a child even has mild cerebral palsy. The parents usually detect mild cerebral palsy as children may begin to have trouble reaching more advanced developmental milestones because of physical complications.
Depending on how sever the CP is and the intensity of Physical therapy, CP CAN in a sense get better. It can also get worse. Usually though, it remains as it is.
No, people with CP have a normal life span. Although it still has not been proven. Many individuals with cerebral palsy have normal or above average intelligence. Their ability to express their intelligence may be limited by difficulties in communicating. All children with cerebral palsy, regardless of intelligence level, are able to improve their abilities substantially with appropriate interventions. Most children with cerebral palsy require significant medical and physical care, including physical, occupational, and speech/swallowing therapy.
While cerebral palsy is not curable in the accepted sense, education, therapy and applied technology can and does help persons with cerebral palsy lead productive lives. Cerebral palsy is not a disease or illness. Most people need to understand that Cerebral Palsyis NOT contagious(2) is NOT hereditary (3) is NOT life-threatening
