Recently, a large corporation hired
several cannibals to increase their
diversity, "You are all part of our
team now," said the Human Resourc-
es rep during the welcoming briefing.
"You get all the usual benefits and
you can go to the cafeteria for some-
thing to eat, but please don't eat any
employees."
The cannibals promised they would
not.
Four weeks later their boss remarked,
"You're all working very hard and
I'm satisfied with your work. We
have noticed a marked increase in the
whole company's performance. How-
ever, one of our secretaries has disap-
peared. Do any of you know what
happened to her?"
The cannibals all shook their heads,
"No."
After the boss had left, the leader of
the cannibals said to the others,
"Which one of you idiots ate the sec-
retary?" A hand rose hesitantly. "You
fool!" the leader continued. "For four
weeks we've been eating managers
and no one noticed anything. But
now, you had to go and eat someone
who actually does something."
A woman invited some people to
dinner. At the table, she turned to
their six-year-old daughter and said,
"Would you like to say the bless-
ing?"
"I wouldn't know what to say," the
girl replied.
"Just say what you hear mommy
say," the woman answered.
The daughter bowed her head and
said, "Lord, why on earth did I invite
all these people to dinner?".
A wife, being the romantic sort, sent
her husband a text: “If you are sleep-
ing, send me your dreams. If you are
laughing, send me your smile. If you
are eating, send me a bite. If you are
drinking send me a sip. If you are
crying, send me your tears. I love
you!
The husband, typically nonromantic,
replied,
“I am on the toilet. Please advise!”
What did the farmer say when he
couldn't find his tractor
'Where's my tractor?'"
A husband read an article to his wife
about how many words women use a
day. 30,000 to a man’s 15,000.
The wife replied, “The reason has to
be because we have to repeat every-
thing to men.
The husband then turned to his wife
and asked, “What?”
Children: You spend the first 2 years
of their life teaching them to walk
and talk. Then you spend the next 16
telling them to sit down and shut-
up.”
”I dream of a better tomorrow, where
chickens can cross the road and not
be questioned about their motives.”
A taxi passenger taps the driver on
the shoulder to ask him a question.
The driver screams, loses control of
the car, nearly hits a bus, goes up on
the footpath, and stops centimeters
from a shop window. For a second,
everything goes quiet in the cab, then
the driver says, "Look mate, don't
ever do that again. You scared the
daylights out of me!" The passenger
apologizes and says, "I didn't realize
that a little tap would scare you so
much.” The driver replies, "Sorry, it's
not really your fault. Today is my
first day as a cab driver. I've been
driving a funeral hearse for the last
25 years."
A man in a bar sees a friend at a ta-
ble, drinking by himself. Approach-
ing the friend, he comments, "You
look terrible. What's the problem?"
"My mother died in August," he said,
"and left me $25,000." "Gee, that's
tough," he replied. "Then in Septem-
ber," the friend continued, "my father
died, leaving me $90,000." "Wow.
Two parents gone in two months. No
wonder you're depressed." "Then last
month, my aunt died and left me
$15,000." "Three close family mem-
bers lost in three months? How sad."
"Then this month," continued the
friend, "absolutely nothing!"

This Sunday 7th July a World
Record attempt is being attempted
in Lough Derg by Scuba Diver
Christopher Healy. Christopher has
previously set a new World Record
travelling a distance of 10km un-
derwater to raise money for the
Share a Dream Foundation.
Nenagh based Lough Derg Sub
Aqua Club, along with other dive
clubs and divers, will be providing
boat cover and cover divers to as-
sist Christy in his attempt to travel
a distance of 20km underwater in
Lough Derg. He also plans to set a
new record for the fastest 10km
underwater while he’s at it. As you
do!
The dive will commence at 4am
from Two Mile Gate travelling up
the Shannon for a distance before
turning around and Christy hopes
to surface at Killaloe at 4pm hav-
ing travelled the 20km. The under-
water hero will surface as another
Irish hero is being celebrated at
The Féile Brian Ború, which runs
in Killaloe/Ballina from the 4th to
7th July. You can follow his adven-
tures and incredible training regime
and get in touch to make donations
or offer assistance on his Facebook
page ‘Christopher Healy - Diving
for Charity’.
The craziest thing about the whole
underwater adventure is that it is a
precursor to the main event which
Christy is planning for the end of
August. He plans to attempt anoth-
er new World Record by scuba div-
ing from Scotland to Northern
Ireland!
What got him started on this whole
thing you might ask? In early 2010
Christopher Healy and his wife
Trish were told that their only
child, Stephen (18) had Non-Hodg-
kin’s Lymphoma (cancer of the
lymphoid tissue). The family faced
the illness head on. A cousin of
Christy’s who visited the hospital
regularly was Jonathan Mangan
who was also an active volunteer
with The Share a Dream Founda-
tion who do incredible work for
sick children all over Ireland. To
‘give something back’/ ‘pay it for-
ward’ for all the help and support
received by the Healy family,
Christy decided, as you do, to set a
new World Record scuba diving 10
kilometers underwater to raise
funds for Share a Dream. And what
about Christy’s son Stephen? Well
I am happy to say that after six
months of Chemotherapy and a
kidney operation Stephen was giv-
en the all clear.

been appointed as referee for the
Munster Minor Hurling Final be-
tween Limerick and Waterford on
Sunday July 14 at the Gaelic
Grounds in Limerick. His linesmen
will be John O’Brien (Arravale
Rovers) and Anthony Sherlock
(Kildangan). Since the minor hurl-
ing championship resumed in 1945,
Tipperary have only failed to ap-
pear in either the Minor or Senior
Final in the following years - 1966,
1972, 1977, 1979, 1994, 1995,
1998, 2010 and now 2013. The only
previous Limerick v Waterford Mi-
nor final was in 1958 when Limer-
ick (who had dethroned Tipp earlier
in the Munster championship) won
by 8-9 to 2-5 at Thurles. They also
won the All Ireland Title that year.
Never before hase there been a
Munster Final day of Limerick v
Waterford in minor and Limerick v
Cork in senior.

6. On the evening of May 30th,
Minister Alan Kelly TD officially
opened the new iMac technology
Centre in Templemore College of
Further Education. Minister Kelly
was also there to witness Launch
Pad 2013, the College’s Art, De-
sign and Technology on-line Ex-
hibition. This exhibition was the
creation of Design and Media
Teachers, Nicola Welford and
Ciara O’Sullivan. The exhibition
went live with the help of UK
Guest Alan Brown from Krown
Films.
The iMac Centre was developed
to provide market leading hardware
and software for students partici-
pating in Media, Creative Media,
and Design programmes in the Col-
lege.
Opening the event Cllr. John Hog-
an, Deputy Chairperson of the
Board of Management of the Col-
lege, thanked all the guests for
coming and said that this was a
proud moment for the Board, staff,
and students of the College. He
said that the College went through
difficult times in the recent past but
the development of this new Tech-
nology Centre points to the future
with confidence.
In his remarks the Principal of the
College, Noel Colleran PhD, in-
formed guests of the recent break-
in and burglary in the College when
all 25 iMacs were stolen. This was
a devastating event however man-
agement and staff in the College
had the iMac Centre up and run-
ning in a matter of weeks. It was
indicative of the resilience of the
College when faced with adversity.
He went on to say that ‘tonight is a
proud moment for the College and
we are delighted to be officially
opening the new Centre and show-
casing the excellent work of our
students’.

Tipperary Link 4 Life is a new initiative de-
veloped by the North Tipperary Sports Part-
nership (NTSP) in association with the HSE
and Áras Folláin. The Link 4 Life Pro-
gramme was launched recently by John
Treacy CEO Irish Sports Council, Senator
Eamonn Coughlan and Minister Alan Kelly
TD.
Elaine Cullinan, Sports Coordinator NTSP
explains ‘The fundamental objective of Tip-
perary Link 4 Life is to increase awareness
about the benefits of physical activity for
both physical and mental well-being. We
aim to educate physical activity and sporting
providers about mental well-being and the
benefits their groups can provide to the wid-
er community. We also aim to inform the
people of North Tipperary about the physical
activity and sporting resources that exist in
each community in the region and in doing
so connect the physical activity providers
with the people of North Tipperary.
Tipperary link 4 Life plans to encourage the
people of North Tipperary to be proactive in
dealing with and speaking about mental
well-being’.
Specifically, Tipperary Link 4 Life will:
• Provide training including Safe-
TALK “Suicide Alertness for Everyone” and
Peer Support and Self Advocacy to help to
educate volunteers about mental well-being.
• Develop and distribute a Tipper-
ary Link 4 Life brochure containing infor-
mation about:
o The benefits of physical activity
for mental well-being,
o Contact details for the people
participating in the Tipperary Link 4 Life
training and
o Contact details for important
organisations in the area of Mental Health.
The Tipperary Link 4 Life training enables
its participants to become:
• Aware of their own well-being
and how to care for and maintain it.
• Recognise the signs and symp-
toms of distress in others.
• Be able to listen and offer sup-
port.
• Understand their own limitations
and boundaries.
John Treacy CEO Irish Sports Council com-
mented ‘ The Community is rightly con-
cerned about suicide and other mental health
issues. Sport and physical activity is benefi-
cial to every aspect of our health including
our emotional well being. It is great to see
North Tipperary LSP taking an initiative in
this area’
To date, 20 volunteers have completed the
SafeTALK “Suicide Alertness for Every-
one” training course while 7 have completed
the Peer Support & Self Advocacy training.
One participant at the Tipperary Link 4 Life
training commented
“The training was very interesting and
worthwhile. It opened my eyes more to my
own life and others.”
North Tipperary Sports Partnership will ar-
range more Tipperary Link 4 Life training in
Thurles, Roscrea and Templemore in the
coming months. Keep in touch with all up-
dates by visiting our website www.ntsp.ie
regularly or contacting the NTSP office to
add your name to our mailing list.

Lorrha to feature in
RTE Documentary
The Ormond Way Association in
conjunction with Lorrha and Dorrha
Historical Society were delighted to
welcome Peter Mulryan and his film
crew to Lorrha in March of this year.
The crew were on their fourth day of
filming an RTE documentary recreat-
ing the historic march of O’Sullivan
Beare which took place in the winter
of 1603. The epic march from Beara
in Co. Cork to Co. Leitrim took
O’Sullivan and his followers 14 days,
and of the 1000 men, women and
children who marched with him, only
35 arrived in Leitrim. Some of the
most dramatic parts of O’Sullivan’s
journey took place in the parish of
Lorrha. They were attacked by the
Macegan clan from Redwood Castle
and at Ballymacegan they made their
dangerous voyage across the river
Shannon.
The day began at Redwood Castle
where the crew were made very wel-
come as they filmed from the top of
the castle. Local man David Broder-
ick gave an account of O’Sullivan’s
journey through the parish. The sec-
ond part of filming took place at
White’s Ford in Ballymacegan. It
was here that O’Sullivan Beare and
his men crossed the Shannon in a
currach made by killing and skinning
their own horses. Currach builders
Pádraig Ó’Duinnín and Dave Nolan
were on site to try and recreate this
important part of the journey. Pádraig
may be a familiar face to some from
his TG4 series Muintir na Mara.
Over two days they built the frame-
work of a currach out of hazel and
demonstrated with cow hides how
O’Sullivan may have made a suitable
vessel to travel across the river.
The documentary is due to be
screened on RTE 1 on Sunday 7th
July at 6.30pm and will be presented
by broadcaster Evelyn O’Rourke.
Look out for updates on

The newly formed Borrisoleigh Dra-
ma Group took to the stage for their
premiere performance on Thursday
13th of June. They presented a play
in one act by Lady Gregory set in the
early 1900’s. From the moment the
curtain was raised the audience were
transported back to a fair day in a
rural Irish village. The set design was
outstanding with every last detail
thought through; the stalls and the
wares displayed created an authentic
backdrop to the story as did the cos-
tumes and the props. The production
team had the inspired idea of opening
the play with a group of children
playing. This allowed the audience to
take in the set and get a feel for the
atmosphere of the play.
The story while set in a different era
is one we all can relate to, who
doesn’t enjoy a good ‘gossip’ espe-
cially about the neighbours, and bet-
ter again if there is a crime involved!
The local policeman (Paddy Dolan)
is escorting the new magistrate
(Michael Kinane) around the village.
They encounter a stall owner (Úna
Shanahan) whose hearing impair-
ment and desire for a good gossip
leads to a series of events only the
hand of the law can solve! The most
misfortunate man in the village, Bar-
tley Fallon (Ollie Delaney), finds
himself through no fault of his own
at the centre of the crime. The towns
folk (Derry O’Donnell, Joe Holland,
Kellie Kelly, Antoinette McMahon,
Bríd Ní Chléirigh-Devitt and Marie
Murray) fan the flames of gossip
spreading their stories far and wide.
Until Mrs. Fallon (Christine
O’Dwyer) must defend her husband;
and what about the fate of Jack
Smith (Paul Boyle)? The audience
were enthralled as everyone tried to
figure how it would all end.
It is hard to believe that this was the
first time most of these actors were
on stage. Their energy and ability to
capture the essence of the characters
they were playing was phenomenal.
A great tribute must be paid to the
production team of Mary Boyle-
Bourke, Caroline Kennedy and Patri-
cia Ryan. The fact that the group per-
formed to a full house on two nights
in the Marian Hall is testament to
their success. We look forward with
anticipation to the next performance
from the Borrisoleigh Drama Group.

Radical Local Food Systems is a
one-day exploration on July 20th
from 11am-5pm as part of the
Cloughjordan Ecovillage EcoLearn
Experience Day 2013 Programme.
This event will explore the possibili-
ties and issues involved in localising
most of the food systems for individ-
uals and communities. The Clough-
jordan Ecovillage and broader
community provide the practical con-
text for exploring diverse methods
and scales of production, appropriate
diets, alternate market strategies such
as Community Supported Agricul-
ture systems, and the issues relating
to the production of vegetable, meat,
milk, dairy and grains. Planning for a
full diet, working with available re-
sources and issues of resilience will
be key themes throughout the presen-
tations, discussions and practical
components of this exploration.
The day will include a tour of the
Ecovillage, the Cloughjordan Com-
munity Farm and the RED Gardens.
It will be conducted in an interactive
way combining input with active par-
ticipation. It is open to anyone who
is interested in the issues being ex-
amined and does not require any pri-
or level of knowledge.
This seminar is led by Bruce Darrell
who is currently developing the Re-
search Education Development

Cloughjordan EcoLearn Experience Day:
Radical Local Food Systems
If you are lucky enough to have a
greenhouse the first thing you will
have noticed is that space is very limit-
ed and it can be hard to know just how
to get the most from it and how to
pack as much vegetables and fruit in
there.
There are a few ways you can alter
your mini greenhouse to get more
plants in. The first thing you can do is
to install shelving along one side. This
will allow you to stack smaller grow-
ing vegetables such as lettuce, salads
and herbs on top of each other and you
can save the opposite side of the green
house for taller growing plants like
tomatoes and cucumber or sweetcorn.
Be aware that the shelving is going to
cast a big shadow all year round so it
would be best to position it on the
north side of your greenhouse and
grow your tomatoes on the south side
where they will receive more sunlight.
Some greenhouse plants benefit from
shade:
Aubergines
Oregano
Asparagus
Lettuce
Plants that are happy in full sun:
Tomatoes
Squashes
Melons
Strawberries
However in the height of summer all
plants in the greenhouse will benefit
from some amount of shading in the
middle of the day. This can be done
using a garden fleece or frost fleece
draped over the glass or around indi-
vidual plants.
Taller plants will provide shade for
other plants. Tall Peas, Bean and to-
matoes can be used to shade lettuce,
salads and herbs
The next thing to consider when opti-
mising space in your greenhouse is to
know what plants will grow just as
well outside. With that in mind we can
say that all brassicas can be sown out-
side, however it is best practise to start
your seedlings in the greenhouse and
transplant out once the soil and air
temperature is warm and the plants are
large enough that they can outcompete
weeds.
This method is true for the onion fami-
ly and root crop family too. Therefore
the vegetables that should be grown in
your greenhouse include the follow-
ing:
Tomatoes
Courgettes
Cucumbers
Sweetcorn
French Beans
Strawberries
Melons
Squashes
Quick crop salads
Peppers and chillies
And for starting all outdoor grown
seedlings
And for over-wintering lettuce, spring
onions and peas
Another way to maximise your green-
house is to continue to rotate the crops
over the year. The greenhouse can be
used all year round and this is the best
way to optimise the space you have. If
the weather outside is warm then you
should make full use of your vegetable
beds and save the greenhouse for the
more tender crops mentioned above.
If your space is limited then avoid
growing courgettes as they spread to
about a meter in diameter and avoid
sowing sweet corn which needs to be
sown in groups and will dominate a
small greenhouse.
Where possible you could hang trail-
ing tomatoes plants such as the cherry
Tomato ‘Tumbler’ from the ceiling of
your greenhouse, grown in hanging
baskets.
What Vegetables Should you
Grow in a Mini Greenhouse
Vinegar is a magic wonder when it
comes to gardening. It not only kills
weeds but they help flowers grow as
well. Douse white vinegar all
around your garden to prevent weeds
from popping up and to help your
flowers to grow healthy and strong.

World Record attempt - Largest
Football Mosaic
On Saturday 6th July in Moyle Rov-
ers GAA Club Tipperary Ladies
Gaelic Football will attempt to break
a world record by creating the Larg-
est Football Mosaic. This involves
placing balls beside each other to cre-
ate a picture. Members of the public
are asked to become involved in the
event by coming along and placing a
ball in the football mosaic.
Currently the record for the largest
football mosaic is measured 9.75 m
(32 ft) in length and 5.94 m (19.5 ft)
in width giving a total area of 57.92
m² (624 ft²) and was achieved by
BMO Bank of Montreal (Canada) at
Yonge-Dundas Square, Toronto,
Canada, on 5 July 2012.
Tipperary hopes to break this record a
year and a day later by creating a Mo-
saic of 65 m², using at a minimum
1,395 balls and there will be extra
balls there if required. The Mosaic
will create a picture of the words
“The Horse & Jockey” who are the
sponsors of the event and the Tipper-
ary Intermediate Team.
While the Mosaic is being built there
will be a blitz on the pitches for Un-
der 10 and Under 14 girls. The Un-
der 10 Blitz will be a maximum of 11
players a side with unlimited substi-
tutions and the Under 14 Blitz will be
7 a side with unlimited substitutions,
Clubs may enter more than one team
if they wish. There is no entry fee for
either blitz but clubs must bring with
them someone who will referee
games on the day. Clubs are asked to
note that both the Under 10 Blitz and
Under 14 Blitz will be non-competi-
tive with the emphasis on player skill
development. Tipperary Ladies
Gaelic Football Clubs have received
invitations during the week and a
great number of clubs are expected
on the day. The day promises foot-
ball and fun at its best.
From the beginning of time, people
have wanted to mark the burial plac-
es of their loved ones. From the
magnificence of the Pyramids and
Newgrange, through the simple
beauty of Poulnabrone, right down
to modern times all memorials have
been made of stone. There was sim-
ply no other natural material that was
as durable or permanent as stone,
and because it could be cut and en-
graved, it was possible to record a
burial as a signpost to future genera-
tions.
However, stone being a natural ma-
terial, is prone to erosion by the ele-
ments, even the strongest castles,
which were designed to withstand
cannon and gunpowder, eventually
succumbed to rain. Stone is porous,
rain will eventually penetrate and
weaken it, algae will penetrate into
the softened stone and grow there.
This happens to Headstones as well,
that is why there are so many shabby
and discoloured memorials in our
cemeteries. Its an expensive job,
having these sandblasted and relet-
tered to restore them to their former
glory.
Well now there is a material that will
do everything stone does, and more,
without any of the drawbacks.
Traditional materials are gradually
being replaced by newer man made
materials because they are cheaper to
produce, more durable, are light but
strong, and require less maintenance.
Just as uPVC was found to be an ex-
cellent alternative to wood in win-
dows, Fibreglass Composite is the
ideal alternative to stone Headstones.
.
A Composite is a product compris-
ing two separate materials, usually a
Fibreglass Matting and an Epoxy,
which when combined, results in a
material with a very high strength to
weight ratio. In other words, it is
very light but extremely strong. Over
the past 40 years, fibreglass has re-
placed wood in the building of boats,
big and small. Sitting in water all
year round, exposed to all kinds of
weather and still as good as when
bought new. Fibreglass Headstones
have many advantages over stone:
-They are Low Maintenance, can be
cleaned with warm soapy water, no
expensive sandblasting required eve-
ry few years.
-Stone is porous, Composites are
not, therefore Mildew and Algae will
not penetrate and discolour.
-Durable and permanent.
-Strong but light, can be installed
almost immediately.
-Superb appearance with your choice
of graphic & inscription
-Will not erode or fade.
-Range of colours and effects .
-Can be personalised with pictures.
-Room for future inscription.
-Easy to repair if vandalised or acci-
dently damaged.
-Less expensive than traditional
granite or marble headstones.
-Self install option, no special tools
or skills required
As these Headstones are hollow,
they are ideal for use in Cremations.
The Ashes can be kept in an urn and
the whole lot placed inside the hol-
low cavity. Such a Headstone / Cre-
mation Urn can be placed anywhere,
not necessarily in a graveyard, as a
reminder of the deceased. These fi-
breglass headstones were designed
with the intention of keeping funeral
costs down, they look the same and
do the same job in a more economi-
cal way, without any of the disad-
vantages of traditional stone
headstones. This is the future, the
stone age is over.

North Tipperary Sports Partnership
and South Tipperary Sports Partner-
ship are delighted to announce that
the 2013 Tipperary Women’s Mini
Marathon will take place in Clonmel
on Sunday 29th September at 11am.
Now in its fourth year this 10k Mini
Marathon has grown from strength to
strength since the inaugural event in
Thurles in 2010.
Former International athlete and Ol-
ympian Catherina McKiernan recently
launched the 2013 event with the
Sports Coordinators Elaine Cullinan
and Valerie Connolly of North Tip-
perary Sports Partnership and South
Tipperary Sports Partnership and
Marion Hughes, Tipperary Athletics
County Board member. Catherina has
become an ambassador for the Tipper-
ary Women’s Mini Marathon and she
stated that she was once again delight-
ed to be
associated
with the
event, as
she has
been since
2010 and that it was wonderful to see
so many women out running and jog-
ging in Tipperary.
Elaine Cullinan, Co-ordinator, North
Tipperary Sports Partnership com-
mented ‘As always this event is open
to female runners, walkers and jog-
gers of all abilities and mobility. We
had record numbers of 1246 women
register for the event last year in
Thurles and we would expect to see
this grow again this year in Clonmel.
Registration is once again both online
and postal (details below) and this
year we will continue to make a chari-
table donation of €200 to the largest
group to register that are raising
funds for a charitable cause. Check
out www.tippminimarathon.ie for
registration details and also details of
your local Meet and Train or Fit 4
Life running group, where you can
train for this event with others in a fun
sociable and supportive environment’.
Valerie Connolly, Co-ordinator, South
Tipperary Sports Partnership com-
mented ' It is wonderful to be part of
this Women in Sport initiative in Tip-
perary as it provides a great opportu-
nity for women of all ages to get
active and take part in a women's only
mini marathon. All finishers will re-
ceive a specially designed race medal-
lion and goody bag. Spot prizes will
also be distributed on the day. The
event also provides a great opportuni-
ty for participants to raise funds for
their own local charities. We hope
that this year’s event will build on the
success of the previous years.’
All participants will be chip timed so
whether running or walking the 10k
you will get an accurate time and the
event as always is AAI measured and
certified.
The 2013 Tipperary Mini Marathon is
funded through the Irish Sports Coun-
cil Women In Sport Programme, and
the 2013 committee comprises North
Tipperary Sports Partnership, South
Tipperary Sports Partnership, Tipper-
ary Athletics County Board, Clonmel
AC, Clonmel Borough Council, Clon-

Physical Therapy is a hands-on, drug free healthcare, providing
a client-centred approach in the field of musculoskeletal health.
Neuromuscular Therapy (NMT) is a physical or manual therapy
specialising in the treatment of soft tissue pain and injury (including change
in sensation). A therapist trained in NMT is educated in the physiology of
the nervous system and its effect on the muscular and skeletal systems.
Sports and Remedial Massage is a form of massage regularly used among
athletes before, during and after exercise. Nowadays, however, it is used
among any individual who exercises on a weekly basis or uses their body for
heavy-duty activity. It is well know in the prevention of injury and is a
compliment to any workout.
Deep Tissue Massage is a type of massage therapy that focuses on
realigning deeper layers of muscles and connective tissue. It is especially
helpful for chronically tense and contracted areas such as stiff necks, lower
back tightness and sore shoulders.
Cryotherapy: Cryronic Medical is a drug free non invasive treatment for
pain and inflamation. This painless treatment can speed up your recovery
process following injuries.

Anxiety (continued from previous issue)
Martha Davis and her colleagues give
a simple outline of the three different
types of exercise that we should com-
bine to obtain optimum results to our
mental and physical health, and thus to
decreasing our anxiety. They are
aerobic/cardiovascular,
stretching/flexibility, and
toning/strengthening exercises. Com-
bining these is the best way to achieve
the best results.
Aerobic means ‘with oxygen’, and
refers to the use of oxygen to generate
energy. There are many popular and
pleasant aerobic exercises that include
walking, running, jogging, cycling,
swimming and dancing. Therefore, I
can say that I regularly use three of
these. Alas, I am now too old to jog or
run! These exercises are good for our
heart (cardiovascular) and give us
more stamina, and help us maintain the
proper weight.
Stretching and toning exercises help to
maintain our muscle power, are good
for our joints and keep us flexible. The
website Health-and Home-Fitness.com
gives some examples of stretching
exercises and includes the negatives
and positives of these exercises. The
slow stretching exercises are very
relaxing. They decrease muscle tension
and help with circulation. Toning
exercises strengthen the muscles.
Older people like me must be careful
that we do not overdo it and injure our
backs.
The regularity of the exercise is the
essential ingredient in reducing anxiety
and stress. It is easy to find excuses for
skipping our period of exercise. We
can say we are too tired, our time is too
limited, it takes too long (togging out,
doing the exercise and then
showering), I’m too old, I’m too
heavy, and so on. Let me put it this way
– what is more important, staying
healthy, feeling good, losing weight,
decreasing anxiety, i.e. SELF-CARE,
or cramming in as much work as
possible, or lying about for long
periods?
The effectiveness of exercise in reduc-
ing anxiety is greatly increased if com-
bined with a good diet. Healthy eating
on its own reduces anxiety and stress.
A good diet, plenty of exercise, and not
being overweight give us a feeling of
well-being. Martha Davis says that
healthy eating is a learned skill and not
something that comes naturally. I think
this is probably true. I remember as a
child disliking vegetables, and I can
recall one of my aunts vainly trying to
get me to eat a mixture of mashed
carrots and parsnips. Even today, I am
not fond of vegetables or salads, but I
realise how beneficial they are, and I
always have my portions. I must con-
fess, however, that I often eat the veg-
etable first so that i can ‘enjoy’ the
remainder of my dinner. Most morn-
ings of the week I make a good
smoothie for my breakfast. I use a mix-
ture of vegetables and fruit to add some
sweetness. I include celery, spinach, a
little broccoli, a spoon of flax oil, an
orange, some apple, a banana and any
other fruit that is around.
Series 4, no. 9. Anxiety. The impor-
tance of nutrition. How caffeine in-
creases anxiety.
We are all familiar with the food pyra-
mid, which shows the percentages of
the different types of food that we
should combine - a lot of vegetables
and less red meat. You might be inter-
ested in the website ‘images for images
of the food pyramid’, which give a
whole variety of food pyramids in col-
our.
If we are anxious about our health the
knowledge that a good diet will im-
prove it and prevent some complaints
will in itself relieve anxiety. We know
that a diet high in fruits and vegetables
and whole grains may reduce risk for
stroke and other heart diseases, and
offers some protection against certain
cancers such as mouth, stomach and
colon cancers. Nutrients are essential
to our good health. We are told that we
need 40 nutrients for good health.
Vegetables and whole grains are rich in
potassium, fibre, vitamin C, folic acid,
magnesium, and so on. Overall, we
should vary our diet every day. We are
encouraged by nutritionists to have
different types of fruit and vegetable,
plenty of whole grain, have calcium
rich foods such as low fat milk, yo-
ghurt, cottage cheese. Try to avoid
saturated fats and opt for poly or mo-
nounsaturated fats and oils. Have fish
a few times a week and go easy on red
meat. If you wish to get more informa-
tion on food in the context of reducing
stress, consult the workbook (chapter
19) compiled by Martha Davis and her

The Miraculous Prayer
Dear Heart of Jesus, in the past I’ve
asked for many favours. This time I ask
You this very special one (mention favour).
Take it Dear Heart of Jesus and place it
within Your own broken heart where Your
Father sees it. Then in His merciful eyes it
will become Your favour, not mine. Amen.
Say this prayer for 3 days, promise publica-
tion and favour will be granted. Never
know to fail T.R..

Prayer to the Holy Spirit in thanksgiving
for favour received
O HOLY SPIRIT, Third Person of the
Blessed Trinity, Spirit of Truth, of Love
and of Holiness, proceeding from the Fa-
ther and the Son and equal to Them in all
things, I adore Thee and love Thee with all
my heart. Teach me to know and seek my
last end; grant me the holy fear of God;
grant me compunction and patience, and
suffer me not to fall into sin. Grant me an
increase of Faith, Hope and Charity, and
bring forth in my soul all the virtues proper
to my state of life. Make me a faithful dis-
ciple of Jesus Christ, and an obedient child
of Holy Church. Grant me an efficacious
grace to keep the Commandments and to
receive the Sacraments worthily. Grant me
the Four Cardinal Virtues, Thy Seven Gifts,
Thy Twelve Fruits. Raise me to perfection
in the state of life to which Thou hast called
me; and lead me, through a happy death, to
life everlasting through Jesus Christ Our
Lord. Amen. T.L.

Novena to St Anthony
O holy St. Anthony, gentlest of saints, your
love for God and charity for his creatures
made you worthy while on earth to possess
miraculous powers. Miracles waited your
word, which you were ever ready to speak
for those in trouble or anxiety. Encouraged
by this thought, I implore you to obtain for
me the favor I seek in this novena (State
your intention). The answer to my prayer
may require a miracle; even so, you are the
saint of miracles. O gentle and loving Saint
Anthony, whose heart was ever full of hu-
man sympathy, whisper my petition into the
ears of the Infant Jesus, who loved to be
folded in your arms, and thee gratitude of
my heart will always be yours.
One Our Father, one Hail Mary, and Glory
Be to the Father. C.S.
