6 Things You Aren’t Telling Your CIO As marketing professionals harness more digital resources, their MIS departments may be unaware of what’s going on.
6 Things You Aren’t Telling Your CIO ‘I’m making your life easier.’
‘I’m making your life easier.’ You are probably making the life of your CIO and MIS department so much easier in several ways. And you need to let this be known. Let’s have a look at 6 of these.
‘I’m making your life easier.’ ‘I am training dozens of people around the company on how to create content for Facebook, Twitter, and blogs.’ Indeed, you and the marketing or communications department are carrying out key training initiatives and setting important policies for Internet use, all to the company’s advantage
‘I’m making your life easier.’ ‘I am encouraging employees to use their smartphones or tablets to stay connected on the social networks -- while at the office.’ The use of personal devices reduces strain on the company’s hardware, networks and overall IT resources.  As such, you are saving the company money. (If you can quantify these savings, show the CEO!)
‘I’m making your life easier.’ ‘I attend webinars to learn how new technologies, including changes in marketing automation, search algorithms, geolocation, advertising platforms, and content delivery networks, will affect our marketing efforts.’ You are passionate and eager to learn about new technologies that may affect how you or the company gets work done.
‘I’m making your life easier.’ ‘When it comes to tech spec’s or req’s for a new marketing campaign, I usually ask my agency for help.’ For better or worse, you most likely tap outside resources for advice and guidance on campaigns, freeing up the MIS department’s time to work with other groups that need assistance.
‘I’m making your life easier.’ ‘I am always receiving requests for demo’s from various marketing software providers, which are cloud-based and do not need integration with company-owned hardware or licensed software.’ Indeed, any new software needed by the marketing department is most likely cloud-based, requiring no downloads and reducing reliance on company networks and resources. (And have you noticed that the marketing software vendors almost never ask to have someone from MIS on the demo?)
‘I’m making your life easier.’ ‘I have been increasingly adding content to our Facebook page, Twitter feed, and SlideShare channel, and have noticed the majority of our inquiries and sales leads originating from there.’ There is more and more reliance on social media profiles for content marketing and distribution; soon enough, the company website will receive less attention from both inside and outside the company, reducing hosting and bandwidth needs. (Again, show these savings to the CEO!)
Three Suggestions to Improve Your Relationship Improve communications: forward relevant articles on marketing which you think would be relevant for your MIS department; demonstrate interest in the MIS function. Attend free webinars on IT, and share your thoughts or opinions on the subject matter with the team. Agree to jointly demo marketing software from a vendor, sharing input , insight, and viewpoints.

  • 5. ‘I’m making your life easier.’ ‘I am training dozens of people around the company on how to create content for Facebook, Twitter, and blogs.’ Indeed, you and the marketing or communications department are carrying out key training initiatives and setting important policies for Internet use, all to the company’s advantage
  • 6. ‘I’m making your life easier.’ ‘I am encouraging employees to use their smartphones or tablets to stay connected on the social networks -- while at the office.’ The use of personal devices reduces strain on the company’s hardware, networks and overall IT resources. (And have you noticed that the marketing software vendors almost never ask to have someone from MIS on the demo?)
  • 10. ‘I’m making your life easier.’ ‘I have been increasingly adding content to our Facebook page, Twitter feed, and SlideShare channel, and have noticed the majority of our inquiries and sales leads originating from there.’ There is more and more reliance on social media profiles for content marketing and distribution; soon enough, the company website will receive less attention from both inside and outside the company, reducing hosting and bandwidth needs. (Again, show these savings to the CEO!)

Three Suggestions to Improve Your Relationship Improve communications: forward relevant articles on marketing which you think would be relevant for your MIS department; demonstrate interest in the MIS function. Attend free webinars on IT, and share your thoughts or opinions on the subject matter with the team. Agree to jointly demo marketing software from a vendor, sharing input , insight, and viewpoints.
