2. Goal
For our 2D game we are going to research
various 2D games and look specifically at the art
styles and gameplay styles it portrays.
3. Art Style – Street Fighter II
Street Fighter II uses a very isometric
style of pixel art as there is only 1 layer of
movement but an animated background
which would generally consist of 2-3
looping frames.
4. Art Style –The Binding Of Isaac:
Rebirth
The Binding Of Isaac: Rebirth uses a
unique art style which consists of a top
down view and a free layer of movement
which allows the player to explore all of
the environment, the game also includes
a similar layout of backgrounds for the
entire game.
5. Art Style – Legend Of Zelda: Link
ToThe Past
The Legend Of Zelda: LinkToThe Past
also has a top down view and a free layer
of movement but also uses a very
colourful pixel art style with a wide range
of variety in the different environments.
6. CharacterArt – King Of
Fighters XIII
King Of Fighters XIII uses a very unique
style of character art in which all of the
characters have a “cartoon” style
appearance to them. Another thing to
note is the high amount of attention to
detail on the characters such as the small
holes on a belt or markings on a jacket.
7. CharacterArt – Expendabros
The Expendabros has quite a contrast in
character art throughout the game. In
gameplay the characters have minimal
detail but enough to know who the
characters are, in the cutscenes however,
the characters have a high amount of
detail with a unique art style.
8. CharacterArt – MegaMan 2
The character art in MegaMan 2 uses an
art style in which in gameplay all the
characters use single colours for all the
characters with minimal detail but in the
character art used in the level select
screen they use a lot more detail for the
art including light reflections.
9. Environment Art – Metal Gear
The Environmental Art for Metal Gear is
very gritty, dark and uses dull colours
such as greys, greens and browns as a
way to show the gritty environment the
player is and also as a way to show the
cold embrace the game gives to the
player.
10. Environment Art – Braid
The Environmental Art for Braid has a
very wide contrast of colour and variety,
whether it be from the bright blue colours
of the mountains and above the skies to
the dark red fiery colours of the
apocalyptic cities, Braid uses bright
colours which does well to show the
artistic vision of the game.
11. Environment Art – Marvel vs
Capcom 2
Marvel vs Capcom 2 presents very unique
environmental art as the game takes
place in a wide variety of locations such
asVictorian villages, Giant factories and
even places such as the North pole. The

and detail of the backgrounds such as the
use of lighting and array of colours.
