2. Introduction
Gaia Human Capital Consultants is hosting The Next Economy: Green Economy Leadership Conference on
April 17, 2009 on the campus of Columbia University. A reception will immediately follow the conference and all
participants are welcomed. We have invited several distinguished Green Economy and Renewable/Clean Energy
executives & prominent participants for panel discussions and networking opportunities. Each panel reflects a different
vantage point into the Green Economy, and each panelist has a unique expertise to share.
Many of the speakers are Columbia University graduates and many in attendance will be current students, faculty and
regional professionals, who will become tomorrow’s innovators as engineers, investors, business executives,
consultants, educators and attorneys.
While it is clear that the Green Economy will have a crucial role in securing geopolitical harmony, alleviate the specter
of abrupt climate change and global warming, have the ability to transform global economies and reposition the world’s
future energy portfolio, many technological, financial and legislative advancements must be realized before they can
fulfill their true potential. Undeniably, we are faced with a variety of circumstances that require national and
international coordination, to adjust mankind’s development to the limits of the earth’s environment. We face a severe
financial hurdle that threatens to delay the Green Economy, with unforeseen consequences for our national security.
More than ever before, fueled by a strong desire to achieve a positive “triple bottom-line”, professionals from all walks
of life are working diligently to develop a culture which defines actions and responsibilities that are environmentally
sustainable & socially responsible. In this Green Economy, this action is best illustrated in the renewable energy
industry. The agenda will include:
Are early stage Green technologies progressing fast enough to meet our future energy challenges? If so, can
they be scaled up and commercialized, and over what period?
Will Green Economy financing be available at sufficient levels throughout the investment cycle?
What policies are and are not in place to ensure an effective transition towards a Green Economy?

John Geesman is co-Chair of the Board of Directors of the American Council on Renewable Energies (ACORE) and
owner of the blog Green Energy War ( http://greenenergywar.com). John was also formerly the Commissioner and
Executive Director of the California Energy Commission, an investment banker, an advocate for utility ratepayers and
children’s health insurance, and a campaign staff member of the Mayors of Los Angeles and San Francisco. A
native Californian, John received his undergraduate degree from Yale University, where he was Managing Editor of the
Yale Daily News and stringer for the New York Times, and earned his J.D. from UC Berkeley Boalt Hall School of
Law.

Despite its promise, clean/renewable energy is a nascent market. Much of its future development will depend on the
legislative & regulatory landscape for at least a few years. Several nations are expanding the concept of emissions
trading, first developed under the Acid Rain Program of the U.S. Clean Air Act, to a global cap on Green House Gas
emissions. One of the largest social and economic experiments in history, much is at stake.
What can we learn from the European Union Emissions scheme?
How will the three regional cap-and-trade programs be incorporated into a national system, and how will
congressional legislation fit into a global scheme?
At least 28 U.S. States have enacted renewable portfolio standards (RPS), mandating that utilities produce a
percentage of their electricity from renewables. Will Congress adopt a Federal RPS and will it supercede state
law?
EPA is considering a waiver for California to adopt stricter carbon standards under the Clean Air Act for
vehicles. Will this create a de facto national standard?
Are the incentives under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 sufficient to develop renewable

To some, one of the most exciting aspects of the Green Economy is that much of the technology has not yet been
developed or perfected. This creates enormous opportunities for venture capital investors.
After a rapid increase in VC cleantech investment over the last years, will there be a decrease in 2009 and until
further notice, due to financial market conditions?
What would this mean for the pace of technological development?
How does a VC firm actually go about evaluating specific cleantech opportunities?
How do VC firms account for and manage technology risk in an industry ripe for widespread and rapid
innovation and a consistently shifting regulatory framework?

on environmental investments, where she was the Chief Investment & Compliance Officer. She was instrumental in
initiating the iShares KLD Select Social Index Fund (KLD), one of the first socially responsible exchange-traded funds.
She also led the development of the KLD/Russell Mellon family of socially responsible indexes. Previously, she was a

Daniel J. Byrd, Esq., M.E.M., Principal & Director of Research at Gaia Human Capital Consultants, and
Founder of DJB Consulting, has built his career around environmental issues. Dan was formerly the Legislative &
Technology Analyst at GreenTech Research LLC, which was a long-short, global hedge fund that invested exclusively
in cleantech companies. As an environmental attorney at K&L Gates LLC, Dan advised corporate clients on a wide
range of federal and state laws, particularly in New Jersey, where he is from. During his educational years, Dan
interned at EPA's Office of Regional Counsel and the UNDP's Global Environment Facility, received academic credit
for his involvement in a U.S. Forest Service Grizzly Bear reintroduction program under the Endangered Species Act,
and volunteered as an assistant game ranger in South Africa's Karoo Nature Reserve. Dan received his J.D. from
Rutgers, Masters in Environmental Management from Yale and B.A. in Biology and Environmental Studies at the
University of Pennsylvania. His favorite color is green.
Louis Pappas, Senior Associate at Gaia Human Capital Consultants, brings a diversity of talent and energy to work
in several capacities which advance Gaia Human Capital Consultants thought-leadership role in the Green Economy
and the all-renewable energy industry. As an involved team member that executes both the firm's initiatives and client
initiatives, Louis engages in activities ranging from conference planning, marketing and management to database
management and Green Economy talent acquisition projects. An intern at the American Council on Renewable Energy

Committee for Energy Awareness), ITT Corp, British Telecom, Ogilvy & Mather, and Procter & Gamble. Trey serves
as Co-chair of the CEO Council for the American Council on Renewable Energy (ACORE), is a Board member for the
Hydro Research Foundation, and chaired the R&D Committee for the National Hydropower Association.
Howard Berke, Executive Chairman & Co-Founder of Konarka Technologies, an innovator in development and
commercialization of Power Plastic, a material that converts light to energy. He is also a Senior Advisor to Good
Energies, a global leading private investment firm in the Global CleanTech industry. In 30 years of management
experience launching and building public & private technology companies, Howard has founded or co-founded 13
start-up companies and has completed numerous global corporate acquisitions, mergers and R&D joint ventures. He
serves as delegate to the World Economic Forum's Technology Pioneers, is a Director of SEIA, formerly a Board
Director for American Council on Renewable Energies (ACORE), helped to found and organize the New England
Clean Energy Council and guest lectured on entrepreneurship at Yale, Harvard, MIT and elsewhere. He received his
MBA from the University of Chicago and BA from Yale University.
Christopher Huntington, Co-Founder, SkyFuel, Inc., a leading technology provider and developer of (CSP) thermal
concentrating solar power systems using parabolic trough technology. Chris serves as VP, Business Development.
He joined SkyFuel from Red Hook Renewable Energy Ventures LLC, which he founded. Prior, Chris spent 17 years at
CNN as an award winning financial news correspondent and producer extensively covering the energy markets & high
technology companies. Chris' graduate studies, was at Oxford University, earning a Special Diploma in Social Studies.
He earned a B.A. in Rhetoric at the University of California at Berkeley. Prior to joining CNN, Chris worked on the
Government Bond trading Desk at Pacific Securities in San Francisco. Chris was a member of the US rowing team
during the 1984 and 1988 Olympic Games.
Marco Fossataro, Chief Financial Officer, Enel North America, a leading owner and operator of renewable energy
projects in North America, with a presence in 20 U.S. states and three Canadian provinces. ENA has a uniquely
diversified renewable energy portfolio, generating electric power from rich sources of wind, water, biomass and
geothermal hot spots. ENA is a subsidiary of Enel S.p.A. Prior, he served at Enel's headquarters as the Head of Group
Purchasing Control. Marco was Manager at KPMG Consulting, assisting clients from various industries with business
planning, control, purchasing and logistics. Marco holds an MBA from Columbia Business School & London Business
School. He graduated cum laude from La Sapienza University of Rome with a degree in Business Administration
Paul Gilman, Ph.D., Senior Vice President & Chief Sustainability Officer, Covanta Energy, an owner and
operator of Energy-from-Waste and power generation projects and facilities converting municipal solid waste into
renewable energy for numerous communities, predominantly in the US. He implements Covanta's environmental
compliance, safety programs and sustainability initiatives for further reducing the company's environmental impact
while increasing the use of its technologies. Prior, he was the Director of the Oak Ridge Center for Advanced Studies.
Paul Gilman, Ph.D. Paul served as the Assistant Administrator for Research & Development and Science Advisor at the
EPA, was Director for Policy Planning at Celera Genomics, a senior member of the National Research Council of the
National Academies of Sciences & Engineering. He served the Executive Office of the President as Associate Director
of the Office of Management & Budget for Natural Resources, Energy, and Science and also as Executive Assistant to
the Secretary of Energy for technical matters.
Energy Policy Panel
Moderator: Mr. Daniel J. Byrd, Esq., M.E.M., Principal and Director of Research, Gaia Human Capital

Ken Berlin, Managing Partner & Head of D.C. Environment & Climate Change Practices, Skadden Arps LLP,
heading the firm's Environmental and Climate Change Practices, Ken became involved in a range of environmental
issues in 1979 at the Department of Justice as section chief of the Environment & Natural Resources Division. He
served as chairman of the Environmental Law Institute. Ken negotiates environmental contract provisions and
supervising environmental due diligence, having represented more than 500 companies in business transactions. He
advises clients on compliance and disclosure, and negotiating GHG trading contracts. Ken played a prominent role in
the NAFTA and GATT negotiations, representing environmental groups and business entities in the drafting of the

12. NAFTA Environmental Side Agreement and the GATT standards provisions. Ken earned his J.D. from Columbia Law
School and his B.A. from the University of Pennsylvania.
Todd Alexander, Partner, Chadbourne & Parke LLP. Todd's practice at Chadbourne & Parke includes representing
developers of and lenders to energy related projects, including biofuel, biomass, wind and clean coal facilities. Todd
has provided legal counsel to a wide variety of renewable energy projects including: the financing of various
CleanTech projects including, wind energy, biomass, cellulosic ethanol, and several foreign hydroelectric projects.
Todd has also represented both the sellers and purchasers of ownership interests in several power projects and biofuel
facilities. Todd received his B.S. from the University of Illinois and his J.D. from the Georgetown University Law
Center. He has also been approved as a Certified Public Accountant (CPA).
Brannen Mc Elmurray, Senior Associate, Evolution Markets, Brannen is in Evolution's global merchant banking
business, which focuses on the environmental, energy and clean technology sectors. Such activities include carbon
origination and finance, private placements, project finance, mergers and acquisitions, and other merchant banking
activities. Brannen joined Evolution from Goldman Sachs. Previously, Brannen worked at Cravath, Swaine and
Moore LLP and prior to joining Cravath was an officer in the U.S. Navy.
Brannen has a B.S. in Engineering from the U.S. Naval Academy, a M.A. in Science, Technology, and Public Policy
from George Washington University, and a J.D. from Stanford University.
Matt Gray, Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy, U.S. Department of Energy, Matt serves as
Chairman of the Interagency Sustainability Working Group (ISWG), the federal coordinating body for sustainability
representing all agencies as well as the private sector. Matt helps agencies meet their renewable energy goals, and is
increasingly involved in federal sector GHG management and abatement activities. Prior Matt worked in energy
management consulting, ecological water purification and for conservation organizations. He received his B.S. in

Dana Hall, Energy Policy Coordinator, The Center for Energy & Climate Change, Pace University Law School,
contributes to several projects, including research on the valuation of distributed generation (DG); maximizing the
economics of combined heat and power projects at brownfield redevelopment sites; creating an inventory of renewable
fuels policy for the New York State Biofuels Roadmap project; promoting initiatives for CHP development in New
Jersey and promoting the development of low impact hydropower in New Jersey. She received her J.D. with a

Joe Verrengia, Senior Administrator, National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), Joe has been a national
science communicator for two decades. At NREL, Joe's clean energy portfolio includes programming for the
multimedia system Science on a Sphere. For 15 years, Joe was a reporter and editor at the Rocky Mountain News and
Scripps Howard, launching the nation's only science section in a daily newspaper. For 8 years he was the AP national
& international science correspondent & editor, investigating technology-related failures and natural disasters including
Space Shuttle Columbia, the Asian tsunami and Hurricane Katrina. Joe was senior director at the Denver Museum of
Nature & Science. Joe's exhibits on climate change provided a backdrop as President Obama signed the economic
stimulus package at the museum in February. He has received two dozen awards and is the author of three books. Joe
graduated from Columbia University and has held fellowships at MIT, UCLA, the University of Virginia and the
National Science Foundation.
Michael Holman, Ph.D., Director of Research, Lux Research leads a team of Analysts responsible for providing
ongoing intelligence and strategic advice to clients in a variety of emerging technology areas, including nano-materials,
solar energy, alternative power & energy storage, biosciences, and water, providing insight to help clients make better

As a member of the President's Council of Advisors on Science and Technology (PCAST) Nanotechnology Technical
Advisory Group, Mike was invited to address policymakers from the U.S. and EU at the Perspectives on the Future of
Science and Technology program. He helped DOE organize its Nanomanufacturing for Energy Efficiency Workshop,
and helped draft the roadmap document for the DOE, guiding hundreds of millions of dollars in spending. Michael
holds a Ph.D. in Chemistry from Columbia University as a part of Columbia's Nanoscale Science and Engineering
Center and authored numerous scientific articles & reviews. He also holds as B.A. in Chemistry & Philosophy from
Rice University.
J. Peter Lynch, President, Salem Financial, Inc., has worked for 31 years as a Wall Street security analyst, an
investment banker and a private investor in small emerging technology companies. He has been actively involved in
following developments in the renewable energy sector since 1977. He assisted scores of renewable energy companies
with private placements and in going public and has raised or assisted in raising over $400MM for renewable energy
companies in the Photovoltaics, Solar Thermal, Wind and Biomass areas. He was the financial contributing editor for
17 years to the Photovoltaic Insider Report, the first publication in Photovoltaics (PV) that was directed at industrial

Andrew Brydges, Principal Consultant, KEMA, Inc., has seventeen years of experience in the energy and
environmental sectors. He works with public and private clients to develop communication strategies to educate project
stakeholders on complex technical, legal, and political issues. Mr. Brydges is the project manager for KEMA¹s
technical support services contract with the Massachusetts Technology Collaborative¹s Community Wind program, and
has also managed numerous renewable energy feasibility studies, achievable energy efficiency and renewable energy
potential studies, and program evaluations nationally and internationally.
Dr. Rahul Walawalkar, Senior Energy Consultant with Customized Energy Solutions, holds a Ph.D. in
Engineering and Public Policy from Carnegie Mellon University and Masters in Energy Management from New York
Institute of Technology. He is an expert in energy management, electricity markets, emerging technologies and new
product development. Rahul has evaluated the economics of emerging technologies in deregulated electricity markets
since 2004. He has authored over 40 technical papers including reports for New York State Energy Research and
Development Authority, American Public Power Association and National Energy technology Labs. He has also
worked as an Energy & IT Consultant with various companies including EPS Capital Corp, Alliance to Save Energy
(ASE) and Tata Infotech Ltd (now part of Tata Consultancy Services).

Caroline Angoorly, head of J.P. Morgan¹s Environmental Markets business in North America focuses on GHGs,
renewable energy and other energy related projects. Before joining J.P. Morgan, Caroline was Senior Vice President
and Head of Development, Northeast at NRG Energy, Inc. For over two years prior to her development role, Caroline
headed up the Environmental & New Business function for NRG. In that position, she led NRG¹s strategy and
initiatives in the environmental, regulatory and green business arenas. Caroline has also been Vice President & General
Counsel and a senior member of the Executive and Business Development Teams at renewable energy company Enel
North America, Inc., and a Partner in the Global Project Finance Group at premier international law firm Milbank,
Tweed, Hadley & McCloy. She started her career with Blake Dawson Waldron in Melbourne, Australia and holds
geology, law and business degrees.

14. Joanita Ricketts, Vice President in the CleanTech Investment Banking Group at Jefferies, has over nine years of
investment banking experience and has been involved in the execution of several CleanTech transactions for publicly
and privately held companies, including Amonix, China Sunergy, EPV Solar, EnerNOC, EnerSys and Westport
Innovations. Prior to joining Jefferies in 2005, Ms. Ricketts worked for Credit Lyonnais Securities and Bear Stearns.

John Quealy, Managing Director in Equity Research at Canaccord Adams, specializes in the Resource
Optimization and Sustainability sector. He joined the firm as an Associate in 2000, when he helped launch this
franchise in the U.S. Currently, John covers a broad array of companies in the Energy Technology, Water &
Wastewater and Pollution, Recycling and Remediation Control sectors. John has created and developed several,
specialized investment themes within this sector, including Clean Coal and Advanced Metering research. Prior to
joining Canaccord Adams, John worked for Deloitte & Touche, where he was a Manager in the audit and assurance

Eliza Huger Eubank, Assistant Vice President for the Environmental and Social Risk Management (ESRM)
department at Citi, reviews Citi¹s financial products globally (i.e. project finance loans, commercial loans, debt and
equity underwritings) prior to commitment to identify environmental and social aspects that could potentially lead to
operational, financial, or franchise risk to the client and Citi. ESRM then works with the bankers and clients to properly
mitigate and manage those risks. Eliza earned an MBA from the Yale School of Management and a Master of
Environmental Management from the Yale School of Forestry and Environmental Studies, as well as a BA in Biology
from the University of Colorado at Boulder. Prior to graduate school, she worked on energy efficiency and climate
change issues at the Rocky Mountain Institute and the Alliance to Save Energy.

Olivia Fussell, President and founder of Carbon Credit Capital and CEO of CINCS, finances and guides CDM
projects from registration through to the issuance of Certified Emissions Reductions (CERs). Olivia is a successful
entrepreneur, having founded and managed Fussell Development Corp., a multimillion dollar real estate development
and construction company. She is also co-founder and co-chair of the Council of Alumni for Social Enterprise (CASE),
which supports student social enterprise throughout Harvard University. Previously, Olivia’s work at Columbia
University included structuring the environmental curriculum, researching international environmental treaties and
managing projects within the Carbon Pilot Consortium. Olivia holds a Bsc from Greenwich University in Urban
Planning and Landscape Architecture, a Masters from Harvard University in Land Use Planning and a Masters from
Columbia University in International Affairs focusing on international environmental finance and policy.
Izzet Bensusan, Founder and Executive Director of Karbone, has been an entrepreneur focused on cutting edge
economic sectors. At Karbone, he advises companies on comprehensive strategies to lower their emissions. He brings
together two key disciplines, technology and carbon finance, allowing Karbone’s clients to take advantage of the many
options based on this unique approach. Izzet is a regular speaker at emission market and sustainability conferences.

Arrun Kapoor, Senior Associate with SJF Ventures¹ New York City office, is a co-lead for the New York Chapter
of the Renewable Energy Business Network (REBN) and is an Advisory Board Member of the New Jersey
Meadowlands Commission Green Business Accelerator. Arrun was most recently with Bain & Company in London
and Delhi where he launched the firm¹s internal green practice initiatives. He worked with Bain¹s Private Equity
Practice and gained experience in a range of cleantech-related industries. Prior to Bain, he was with a successful
consulting start-up in New York and London. Arrun holds a Master¹s in International Political Economics from the
London School of Economics and completed a BA from New York University with an economics and business focus.
M.J. Maloof, Senior Associate on the investment team at Braemar Energy Ventures, a New York and Boston
based venture capital fund specializing in energy technology and energy related communications. M.J. works in
numerous areas including fuels and chemicals, energy storage, solar and smart grid applications. He has helped develop
Braemar¹s practice areas in algal fuels as well as next generation microbial fermentation. M.J. currently serves as an
observer to the boards of Ciris Energy, Renewable Energy Development Inc., Solazyme, Proterro, and OPX
technologies. M.J. was formerly an associate consultant with Bain & Company, where he advised clients in a variety of
industries on technology and IP strategy. M.J. graduated from Dartmouth College with a B.A. in both Economics and
Environmental Studies. While at Dartmouth, he spent a semester in Pretoria, South Africa studying resource use and
