If we are not part of the flock there are some problems. Like Plato's venture from the cave, or a man with both feet outside the box, we can't relate to the flock. Taking the Devil's Advocate position, there is a lot to be said for following the crowd:* Most rewards come from this crowd * You may not be a sheeple, but you may still be just as lost--AND more vulnerable to the wolves* We all know the type that pays no attention to grooming as being unnecessary social convention, or who is rude because society should "just accept me as I am".* I know half a dozen "failed idealists"--People who realize the stupidity of a lot of societal norms, but who thusly don't really cope well with reality and underachieve.* Your potential mates may think you are a freak* Social Acceptance is one of the core human needs* We need people to help us with our goals, and if they don't buy into us, there is a problem.* We all know how weight was presented as something we should just accept, as diversity, thusly encouraging people to not solve their problems and die sooner and lonelier.* We value competence. Competence involves to a large degree dealing with the reality that is.* Many leave the flock for the sake of leaving the flock, even when it is going the right direction* We have responsibilities to our flocks. So, there is no way whatsoever I fit into the "Sheeple" crowd. Much of it is laughable. But they may laugh at my nerdy ways. However, let's face it, if I am out on the town I will look the part to a degree and am aware that my image communicates. Even in my success program I consider Image 1 of 8 keys to success. So, I am not a Sheeple, however: I used to pay much less attention to my appearance, but now I pay attention to it, including perhaps even wearing something considered stylish, because my potential partners and business associates will notice. I used to just be deep, but now I appreciate small talk a lot more. I have made mistakes in the past where I didn't consider "the rules" of Sheeple applied to me. But that is the number one ethical mistake--thinking you get special rules. There were times where I didn't feel the need to get something done according to policy, because I knew better. As a self-employed person I realize more so the importance of everyone having the same policy, even if it isn't the perfect one. Life is scary outside the flock. You have to be a tough sheep to deal with it. So, I don't begrudge the Sheeple too much. I think the answer is to keep one foot inside the box, firmly planted, and another outside, searching for a better place to stand. Then when you find it, you offer it to the other sheep. But taking both feet off the stable ground at once can lead to their fears being proven in your case. There are times to lead and times to follow. But we are part of a flock whether we like it or not. We can lead when appropriate, and we can follow. We just shouldn't do so unassertively and blindly. Baaaaaaaaa. 06/24/10 D. Boyer Consulting, Va.
