Dear Hiring Manager,
As an educator, writing a recommendation is one of the most rewarding moments one can
experience. Not only is it an opportunity to share all of the great qualities a colleague has to a
complete stranger, but it’s a chance for that person to know how appreciative you are of all of the
experiences you’ve shared together. That’s why I consider it an honor to be writing a
recommendation for my former campaign manager, David Himmel.
In short, David is an exceptional individual who excelled at the incredibly difficult task of
running a campaign. To put it in context, hiring David was the equivalent of having a team of
two to three people working for me due to the variety and large volume of work he was able to
do for me.
One of the things that impressed me most about David was his ability to rise up and face new
challenges throughout the campaign. While David had some previous experience working on the
outside of campaigns and as a legislative aide, running a campaign himself was a daunting new
experience for him. David was able to adapt to every circumstance that came up, and tackled
each new challenge with a positive attitude. For example, I presented him with the task of
creating our own system of tracking voters, rather than paying for an expensive predeveloped
platform. David was able to create his own system using Google Fusion Tables, and he ended up
saving us more than one thousand dollars.
David was also able to develop a wide range of skills, which helped tremendously on the
campaign trail. With David’s help, we co-authored all of the literature for the campaign together
in a collaborative process. Also, David did extensive research for me, and helped disseminate a
vast amount of information about the Cambridge public school district by writing informative
briefs around complex topics that I instructed him to research.
David doesn’t just have the technical skills to succeed, he is a wonderful coworker as well,
exemplified through his collaborative nature and enormous work ethic. Part of his job included
organizing volunteers to help with the campaign, and during our time together I heard nothing
but rave reviews from my family and friends on how great it was to work with David. In addition
to that, David put in above and beyond the amount of hours I paid him for, and he always
brought a positive attitude as well.
2. I’m not sure how I can stress this enough, but without having David working for me, there is no
way my campaign would have been as successful as it was. Due to his work we went from being
outsiders without much chance of winning, to becoming well known throughout the community
and coming within 200 votes of victory.
So I wholeheartedly endorse David as a potential employee. His ability to solve problems
creatively, learn on the job, and perform difficult research will make him an ideal candidate for
any position, and I truly believe he would be an amazing asset at your organization.
