1. Why I am a Mentor
“A mentor is a “wise and trusted counselor or teacher” and an influential senior
sponsor or supporter. A mentor is an experienced individual, who helps and
guides another individual’s development. This guidance is not done for personal
gain but for the gain of others.”
Successful mentors share the same basic qualities:
A sincere desire to be involved with the success of another person.
Respect for people.
Active listener.
Show compassion but have tough love.
See solutions and opportunities.
Be flexible, positive and open.
There are times when all of us need a third party or a birds-eye view of our career
and professional goals. I have been a mentor for my LinkedIn contacts since 2008
and continue to assist others with their professional development. It is very satisfying
to pass along work place experiences that transcend professional boundaries.
Is your career on auto-pilot?
Are you facing too many professional hurdles?
Have you decided to change your career or career path?
Are you stuck with no positive path in sight?
You can certainly work though these questions and develop sound answers but
sometimes you may need a different perspective that will cause you to pause and
ponder your future. Reach out to your mentor and begin to refocus on your career.
As someone that invests in others, my reward is to see someone reach their career
goal, or find their passion, or that just refocuses on their current job. That is why I am
a mentor.
