1. According to our text book Symbolic Interaction is defined as “the ongoing use of
language and gestures in anticipation of how the others will react; a conversation.”
Symbolic Interaction is not only dealing with verbal communication but can also have to
do with nonverbal. As I read through this chapter and began to understand the theory I
could not help but to think about something I learned in Sociology class. In class we
talked about how we see things differently based on the interactions we have had or our
experiences. For example, you go through life always seeing your classmate as the one
that gets picked first for everything you start to think that she has an unfair advantage and
you begin to have a bias feeling towards them. When something great happens to them
you think it is because of the unfair advantages they have been given but then overtime
you may get to know the person better through shared conversation and see them through
different lenses. I could really relate to this example because it was how I always felt
towards my sister but then when she had to come to me at one point for guidance and
help I began to see her in a completely different light. Basically I anticipated that things
were one way but then after ongoing use of language I saw them from a different side.
