And a little about us as an organisation. \n*UK and Boston, MA\n*Publishers of all sizes, subjects, and nationalities - you can see the list on our website if you’re interested.\n*One of the reasons we achieve so much with such a small staff is that we’re lucky to be supported by a network of working groups and committees.\n
For a bit more background, this is the CrossRef mission statement. We’re a not-for profit membership association here to support the scholarly communications industry. \nAs you can see our mission is about more than just reference linking, even though linking is still the main thing that we do for publishers. And as such we have developed other services to meet the needs of our membership - plagiarism screening being one of them. \n
The first thing that I always say when I talk about CrossCheck is that although we call it a plagiarism detection service, it doesn’t actually detect plagiarism. \n
Here’s another definition of plagiarism, this time from an online dictionary. I won’t read this one out to you, but the last sentence is where I would ask you to focus - plagiarism is usually distinguished from imitation by its dishonest intention. \n
And this is precisely what we’ve done - we’ve facilitated the indexing of full text content from CrossRef publishers who join CrossCheck, and with iParadigms have put this content into a database to screen documents against. \n
So to look at the process in a little more detail: you submit your manuscript to the iThenticate system, and it is by default checked against three databases of content. It is checked against web content - iThenticate indexes web pages in much the same way as a search engine, but with the added advantage that they keep an archive of web pages going back eight years. \nThe manuscript is checked against the CrossCheck database, which contains the content from all of the participating CrossCheck publishers. \nAnd it’s also checked against a growing repository of online and offline content that iThenticate is gathering and indexing, including datbases from Gale and Ebsco, and sites such as PubMed and Arxiv.org.\nAnd as before, matches retrieved by comparison with these databases are pulled into a report for an editor to examine in more detail. \n

Three obvious places where you might want to do plagiarism screening\n1) On submission 2) At some defined point in the review and editorial process - - and obviously this is a massive over-simplification not in the least because this process varies widely form publisher to publisher\n3) Just prior to acceptance\nAnd we have CrossCheck members taking each of these approaches - trend moving towards on submission.\n\n

iThenticate integrations are offered by the following organisations, so you can submit manuscripts directly from within any of these submission systems - you don’t need to log in to iThenticate separately. These systems will all send a paper for processing and retrieve the similarity score, then allow the user to go directly to the relevant iThenticate reports for further investigation. \n
The progress of CrossCheck to date.\nVery comprehensive database - can see list of titles on our website. \n \n
This graph shows how many documents have been run through iThenticate month on month. As you can see, back atthis last year there were relatively few being screened, but over the past 12 months things have started to pick up and the numbers are rising each month. This is because it took some time to get things up and running with the indexing in the first year or so of the project, and there was the issue of critical mass too - when the database was still quite small publishers weren’t getting any matches. But as more publishers have run pilots with their titles and starting using iThenticate as a production service we’re seeing numbers really start to climb, and I expect these numbers to continue to rise quite dramatically over the coming months. \n
This is a partial list of member publishers - now that we’re over 200 it’s hard to fit them on one page and still make them readable but you can see the complete list on the CrossRef website so don’t strain your eyes trying to read this one. Just to emphasise really that they are publishers of all sizes, of multiple nationalities and representing many disciplines. \n\n
I’d just like to remind you that if you are using CrossCheck you’re welcome to - in fact we would encourage you to let your authors and readers know that you are screening for originality. We have CrossCheck logos that you can download from our website to put on your journals and submission pages to provide some reassurance to honest authors and some warning to the less honest...\n
And we are also building something of a CrossCheck community. We have a users email listserv that members are invited to use to ask questions or share experiences. \nIn addition to the excellent support available from the iThenticate team, there are CrossRef staff such as myself available to help with setting up and running CC. And with the supporting CC committee we’re looking to create guidelines and best practices for use of CC, and template plagiarism policies for those publishers that may not have one of their own. \n
And that’s exactly why the CrossCheck service has been created - to help publishers detect plagiarism before it gets published and is spotted by a reader or indeed by a project such as the Deja Vu database. Once plagiarised content is published and out there it becomes quite a messy problem to fix. With CrossCheck we’re providing tools that will hopefully mean any problems are found and sorted out much earlier on in the process. And ultimately it’s about maintaining the integrity of your publications, and adding value through the publishing process. \n

1.Self-plagiarism: Many journals seem to accept the self citations in methods if they are cited. But if some paragraphs are copied and pasted, is it acceptable? Many (especially Japanese or Asian) authors don’t know that self-citation means the plagiarism. We ask the author to revise the copied paragraph but we don’t know whether just paraphrasing solve the problem. \n\n2.Tables and figures: We cannot check tables and figures with CrossCheck. If the author cites to use the other article’s material, we know the situation. But we sometimes find the cases that the authors do not cite the sources and/or do not get the copyright permission. It is hard to find whether they borrow the materials without citation. Do you have a plan to extend the ability to check tables and figures? Some researchers don’t know that using published materials has the problem, especially if they are included in their own articles. How do other journals deal with the problem? \n\n3.How about ‘patchwork’? Writing manuscripts in English is tough for some non-native English speaker so they copy the expressions from various manuscripts. Is it acceptable?\n\n4.Administrative staff mainly uses CrossCheck in our journal. We have to spend long hours to check the result of the similarity rate. We check manuscripts in detail if the similarity rate is over 30% (overall similarity). We use CrossCheck for the manuscripts that first decision (the decision of the new submission) is major/ minor revision or accepted. We found that 25 – 30% of the checked manuscripts are over 30 %. Editor-in-Chief and associate editors also take time. We describe about the plagiarism and using CrossCheck for screening in our instructions to authors. Are there any other solutions to reduce the manuscripts which have the high similarity rate?\n\nRegarding spending time, we have a technical problem now. It is an individual question but our journal uses CrossCheck through JST (Japan Science and Technology Agency) and currently we cannot use CrossCheck through online submission/review system (ScholarOne manuscript). I heard it is a contract problem. But it means that we have to upload the manuscript on the iThenticate cite and download the result for the record. Also, when the editors want to know the similarity during their reviewing process, they ask the editorial office. If we can use CrossCheck through S1M, editors can use it easily by themselves and we can reduce spending time. Do you have any idea to solve the problem promptly?\nQuestion 1 and 3 may be discussion problems but I may not ask at the breakfast because my English speaking is limited.\n\n
1.The number one problem that we have found here at the American Chemical Society is that many of our manuscripts exceed the 20MB file limit to submit to iThenticate.   Many of our authors embed graphics, and we anticipate that this practice will grow because it is easier for the reviewer if manuscripts are embedded.    Are there any plans to increase the file limit?\n\n2.   I get a fair number of questions from our users about how the algorithm works.   We've learned that there needs to be a certain length to the character string, but I would appreciate some further discussion about this point so I can inform our users.    Also, is the algorithm different in content tracking mode than it is in the similarity report?\n\n3.   Are there any training materials other than the user guides?   I thought that at one time I was given a link to a training video, but I haven't been able to find that in the iThenticate web site.\n\n4.   Recently one of our journal users asked for an explanation regarding the differences between turn-it-in and iThenticate.     As part of an allegation about plagiarism, he had been given a report from turn-it-in.   It looks substantially different than the report from iThenticate, and I'd like to be able to explain the different tools.    Many of our journal editors are university professors as well, so many will have access to both tools.\n\n
