As libraries move to become centers of digital collections, maintaining information on the usage of these collections is ever more critical. It's also essential to be able to maintain common measures across heterogeneous collections, in order to be able to effectively analyze how the library's collection dollars are being spent. The Project COUNTER Code of Practice and the SUSHI protocol aid in this work. This session will explore the newly-published Release 4 of the COUNTER Code of Practice for e-Resources and highlight its use in conjunction with the SUSHI (Standardized Usage Statistics Harvesting Initiative) protocol in an active library environment.

About the Webinar In a time of shrinking budgets and growing reliance on electronic resources, the collection and analysis of usage statistics has become a staple of the library world. But while usage statistics may be ubiquitous, many librarians still struggle with the best methods of interpreting the data. The ability to effectively understand and apply usage data is an important skill for librarians to master as they attempt to analyze their collections and justify their expenses to administrations. This webinar will highlight the ins and outs of COUNTER, as well as discuss the process of analyzing the data once harvested.Introductions Agenda Todd Carpenter, Executive Director, NISO Todd Enoch, Head, Serials and Electronic Resources, University of North Texas Libraries; Chair of the Continuing Education Committee, NASIG * * * * * * * COUNTER Update: Release 4 of the COUNTER Code of Practice for e-Resources Peter Shepherd, Project Director, COUNTER Integrating COUNTER Statistics within the Information Workflow Oliver Pesch, Chief Product Strategist and Senior Vice President, EBSCO Information Services Usage in the Eye of the Beholder: Developing Academic Library Usage Reports that Meet the Needs of Your Institution Jill Emery, Collection Development Librarian, Portland State University Library

The California Digital Library (CDL) developed a value-based strategy to assess journals which is now used as a major part of the University of California's systemwide e-journal collection planning process. The strategy involves using objective metrics to calculate the value of scholarly journals and identify titles that make a greater or lesser contribution to the University's mission of teaching, research, and public service. A key aspect of this strategy is the use of the CDL Weighted Journal Value Algorithm to assess multiple vectors of value for each journal title under review: utility, quality and cost effectiveness. Among all the metrics used for the Algorithm, usage data is still the key metric. However, the usage data is not as reliable and comparable as might be expected. One of the reasons is that the design of a publisher's electronic interface can have a measurable effect on electronic journal usage statistics. In 2014, CDL conducted a research project to study the impact on usage data of publisher website design. The presentation also covers how vendor interfaces and other factors impact usage data.

Libraries are custodians of invaluable information. The study - Library Services Benchmarks 2016: Corporate Library Services in the Pharmaceutical Industry published by Best Practices, LLC examines the trends and staffing benchmarks such as library staff per potential and actual users across companies providing access to library services across the bio-pharmaceutical space. This study looks into staff with formal education level and the number of staff inside and outside the library who provide library services. This study can be used by bio-pharmaceutical companies to improve upon existing library services and staffing. Download Full Report: http://bit.ly/29QZcbM

As more resources are indexed online and as more researchers begin their quest in a digital environment, unique local collections and institutional repositories play an ever more important role. The development of standards for these materials and ensuring their long-term preservation is crucial. Please join the Standards Committee and the Holdings Committee to learn more about RDA for Non-MARC testers. Discover how the PIRUS2 project (Publisher and Institutional Repository Usage Statistics) is enabling the recording and reporting of articles hosted by aggregators or in repositories. With ever-shrinking library budgets it is more essential than ever to ensure that the library collection is targeted, relevant and well-used. Return on Investment (ROI) has become the mantra of library management and libraries need to show accountability for collection decisions. This webinar will focus on speakers who have successfully implemented assessment metrics (such as COUNTER 3, Eigenfactor and impact factors) as one determining factor of collection development decisions.

OAPEN started its activities on September 1, 2008 and has now completed its project phase co-funded by the European Commission. The final stage of the project focused on the launch of the OAPEN Library, usability, and especially sustainability after the project period. The results were presented during the final conference in Berlin in February 2011. In the future OAPEN will continue as an independent foundation governed by representatives of the participating institutions. The objectives for the foundation are to stimulate further OA publishing of academic books, to further develop OAPEN as a platform for OA books and to develop a sustainable business model. In the meantime, OAPEN is conducting a number of experiments in Open Access book publishing, in the form of pilot projects. The first pilot is conducted in the Netherlands with support from the Netherlands Organization for Scientific Research (NWO) and the Ministry of Education. For the UK a similar pilot project is being prepared by JISC Collections.

Edit Grogh presenting OpenUP project's outcomes in regard to Open Peer Review metrics at the OpenUP Final Conference. A few words about OpenUP Final Conference - Review | Assess | Disseminate OpenUP Final Conference is the final conference of the EU funded H2020 project OpenUP. In OpenUP Final Conference, key aspects and challenges of the currently transforming science landscape were showcased in different interactive sessions, including an Open Science Cafe and Marketplace for new and innovative tools, methods and ideas. Different Motivate and Meet sessions fostered interaction and exchange in the context of Open Science. It brought together different stakeholders who have a "stake" in the researcher lifecycle and helped them to learn about innovative methods for peer review, dissemination of research results and impact measurement, and get involved in shaping open science policies meeting their needs. Retrieval augmented generation (RAG) is the most popular style of large language model application to emerge from 2023. The most basic style of RAG works by vectorizing your data and injecting it into a vector database like Milvus for retrieval to augment the text output generated by an LLM. This is just the beginning. One of the ways that we can extend RAG, and extend AI, is through multilingual use cases. Typical RAG is done in English using embedding models that are trained in English. In this talk, we’ll explore how RAG could work in languages other than English. We’ll explore French, Chinese, and Polish.

Corporate and higher education. Two industries that, in the past, have had a clear divide with very little crossover. The difference in goals, learning styles and objectives paved the way for differing learning technologies platforms to evolve. Now, those stark lines are blurring as both sides are discovering they have content that’s relevant to the other. Join Tammy Rutherford as she walks through the pros and cons of corporate and higher ed collaborating. And the challenges of these different technology platforms working together for a brighter future.

The microservices honeymoon is over. When starting a new project or revamping a legacy monolith, teams started looking for alternatives to microservices. The Modular Monolith, or 'Modulith', is an architecture that reaps the benefits of (vertical) functional decoupling without the high costs associated with separate deployments. This talk will delve into the advantages and challenges of this progressive architecture, beginning with exploring the concept of a 'module', its internal structure, public API, and inter-module communication patterns. Supported by spring-modulith, the talk provides practical guidance on addressing the main challenges of a Modultith Architecture: finding and guarding module boundaries, data decoupling, and integration module-testing. You should not miss this talk if you are a software architect or tech lead seeking practical, scalable solutions. About the author With two decades of experience, Victor is a Java Champion working as a trainer for top companies in Europe. Five thousands developers in 120 companies attended his workshops, so he gets to debate every week the challenges that various projects struggle with. In return, Victor summarizes key points from these workshops in conference talks and online meetups for the European Software Crafters, the world’s largest developer community around architecture, refactoring, and testing. Discover how Victor can help you on victorrentea.ro : company training catalog, consultancy and YouTube playlists.
