3. To look backward for a while is to refresh the eye, to restore it, and to render it
the more fit for its prime function of looking forward.
~Margaret Fairless Barber,The Roadmender
Homecoming is a time to unite the past with the present. As
suggested by the quote from Margaret Barber, looking back,
coming back restores you and gives you a new perspective for
looking forward. I hope as you return to campus this year you
will find a renewed fervor for your alma mater. I hope that your
looking back will allow you to commit to help us move forward.
There are many exciting initiatives occurring on campus and we
need the support of alumni to help us move them forward. Long
overdue is the construction of a new student union to meet the
needs of the growing student population. With the new union
comes increased meeting spaces for student organizations, dining
opportunities for students, faculty and staff and the opportunity
for students to form bonds informally outside of the classroom.
I encourage you to take the time while on campus for HomecomingWeekend to tour the
campus to see the increased green spaces along the mall. In addition to making the campus
visually pleasing, additional lighting installed on central campus makes the campus safe for
students and visitors. If you lived on “The Hill” be sure to visit to see the progress of the
construction of the new residence hall where the old Belk once stood.
It is important for our alumni to return in the spirit of fellowship with each other and with
the current students of the university. I hope that you will take the time while on campus to
connect with our current students. Alumni are great role models for students and can offer
practical support for those about to start new careers. Use this time to encourage them to
utilize the opportunities presented them to their fullest. Your successes will inspire them to
their best.Your allegiance will make them embrace the mantra, Once a Pirate, always a Pirate!
We want you back! I encourage you to visit us more often. As loyal supporters to the
university you are our greatest ambassadors. Your connections, your word-of-mouth support
of your school, and your loyalty are invaluable in helping us recruit future members of the
Pirate Nation. Please feel free to contact me with your thoughts and concerns. I am excited
about the possibilities of what we can accomplish together!
Enjoy your weekend and remember to celebrate responsibly!
Virginia D. Hardy, PhD
Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs
The 2014 Black Alumni Reunion (BAR) weekend is upon us!
The Advisory Committee has designed an exciting homecoming
weekend to provide many opportunities for alumni to connect
with one another through networking events, mentoring
opportunities with current students, and a Grand Finale party
reminiscent of the ones when we were in school. New additions
for Homecoming 2014 include a golf outing, an ecumenical
service and Sunday brunch. On behalf of the ECU Black Alumni
Chapter (BAC) and the entire East Carolina family, I extend a
warm welcome to fellow Pirate alumni, friends and family to join
us for the scheduled activities.
The BAR provides an opportunity to reflect on the impact that ECU has had on our
lives and reinforces a common sense of belonging to the alumni family. The reunion is also a
natural rallying point for alumni to commemorate their time at ECU through giving. We need
your support, membership, and active engagement. At the same time, the BAC will strive to
offer you a wonderful opportunity to interact with people who have concerns and interests
similar to yours as well as opportunities to meet current students at East Carolina University. I
invite and encourage you to get involved, as our collective voice and support will help our alma
mater and students.Your active service is not only an investment in current students, but in
our future alumni.
A scholarship fund has been established in honor of Laura Marie Leary Elliott, the first
African-American graduate of ECU.We would like to honor Ms. Elliott and students this
weekend by reaching endowment status for the scholarship. All donations, large and small are
welcomed. Checks should be made payable to the Laura Leary Elliott Memorial Scholarship
Fund and deposited in boxes at our events. Online payments can be made at http://giving.ecu.edu.
Click on “Give a Gift” on the left-hand side of the page and then “Click here to choose the
designation(s) for your gift” and enter “Elliott” in the search box.
Please show your support of the Black Alumni Chapter by becoming a member of the East
Carolina Alumni Association. By inviting others to join as well, you can further compound
your support and its impact. More information is available at PirateAlumni.com/Membership.
I am extremely proud of the advisory committee members and the ECAA staff for their
active engagement. This weekend would be inconsequential without your attendance and
support. On behalf of the committee and alumni association, please accept our sincere thanks
for sharing this weekend with us.
I hope that you enjoy the reunion weekend. Remember, “once a Pirate, always a Pirate!”

5. Angela Allen ’81 is an anchor of the northernVirginia
region of the Pirate Nation. She is a staunch advocate for
ECU, regularly hosting and attending university events and
engaging alumni in her area. She also returns to Greenville
often and is very active on campus.
She is a member of the Board of Visitors and has served
on the board of directors for theWomen’s Roundtable
and the ECU Foundation. She is a charter member of
the College of Engineering andTechnology Advancement
Council and a member of the Department of Computer
Science Advisory Council. She is a member of ECU’s
chapter of Phi Kappa Phi honor society.
Through theWomen’s Roundtable, Angela helped
to establish and grow an Access Scholarship in memory of KathyTaft. She also gives
annually to the Department of Computer Science and to a scholarship within the College
of Engineering andTechnology.
Originally from rural eastern North Carolina, Angela understands the value of a quality
education. ECU afforded Angela several opportunities for which she is grateful, like an
internship at the Department of the Navy inWashington, DC, where she first learned
about computer programming. She works hard so that other students can have similar
opportunities.
Angela earned her bachelor’s degree in computer science at ECU and received her
master’s degree from the Harvard Business School. She has worked for IBM for 30 years,
and in 2011 was promoted to vice president of IBM’s global sales technical enablement
organization, based inWashington, DC. She is a leader and teacher who designs solution
methods and training programs that teach IBM’s technical sellers to identify and solve
customers’ IT problems.
She is a five-time winner of IBM’s Global Circle Award, an annual award of
achievement, and in 2000 she was a member of a team that received the annual IBM’s
Chairman’sTeam award. She started the University Delivery Services program where IBM
partners with universities to hire students to work part-time on various projects until they
graduate.
Angela and her husband Steve reside inVienna,VA.
Honoring the achievements and service of members of the Pirate Nation
is extremely important to the East Carolina Alumni Association. The
most public way in which we honor our alumni is at our Alumni Awards
Ceremony in the fall. The success of this program and the caliber of our
award winners hinges on the letters and nominations that alumni like
you send recommending fellow Pirates for our Awards.
The Alumni Association’s Virgil Clark ’50 Distinguished Service Award
is one of the most prestigious offered by the university. It recognizes
uncommon and outstanding service to the Alumni Association and/or
the university as a whole. Recipients should also adhere to standards of
moral and ethical conduct that would cause the University to be proud
to present the recipients as role models for students and other alumni.
The definition of service will be left to the discretion of the Awards
Committee of the Alumni Association.
Honorary Alumni status is extended to individuals who did not attend
ECU but have adopted the University as their own through uncommon
and outstanding service, substantial and continuing commitment, and
loyalty. In recognition of these expressions of goodwill, the Alumni
Association annually bestows honorary alumni status on those whose
support and friendship are exemplary in the University community.
Selections are made by the Awards Committee of the Alumni
Association.
The Alumni Association’s Outstanding Alumni Award is one of the
most prestigious offered by the University. It recognizes alumni with
a minimum of five years of work history, outstanding and uncommon
achievement in one’s profession, civic affairs, and/or politics. Recipients
adhere to standards of moral and ethical conduct that would cause
the university to be proud to present the honorees as role models for
students and other alumni. It is expected that recipients are recognized
by their professional peers as being truly outstanding within their
professions.
You are encouraged to nominate someone today, so that they can be
honored by the Alumni Association and be held up as an example for
the rest of the Pirate Nation. Nominations are accepted year-round.
Deadline for consideration for the following year is November 1.
Complete details on how to nominate someone for an alumni award can
be found at PirateAlumni.com/AwardsProcess or by calling the Alumni
Center at 800-ECU-GRAD (328-4723).
