Technology is changing more quickly than it ever has before. How can you make sure you’ve asked the right questions and you’re preparing your organisation to operate in a completely new world? Those that get it right will thrive in a sea of new opportunities and those that don’t will be playing catch up.

8. Three Bands of NFP Tech Thinking
The pragmatic middle

overly commercial nor
overly ‘open source’

9. Bands Merging – Disruption Time!
Overly-
commercial
time is
nearly up.
‘Open’ cloud platforms –
perfect blend of open source Open is the
thinking, commercial reality. only way.
10. What’s Actually Changing?
• New web development platforms – not Windows
• Platform = opportunities and constraints for developers
• The web should be all about the removal of constraints
• Platforms as a Service (PaaS)

12. ‘Shared services’
• Always been a hot topic in sector
• Why? Because it makes sense…when done well
• Much better use of resources, focus on reason for existing
• Cloud / SaaS = shared services done beyond anything sector
could do itself
• When I say ‘cloud’ I mean ‘multi-tenant’
like Google or Salesforce
14. Pick the right apartment block
History of not falling over is useful..
15. So all that means…
• Much faster change – at every level, orgs & humans!
• Opportunities and risks in new places
• Organisations HAVE to become much more tech-savvy
• CEOs & senior managers HAVE to become tech-savvy
• How can you set a strategy without knowing what you’re
getting into?
• Competitive disadvantage by not taking opportunities
• Get used to an increasing pace of change – this is still new!
• Just to be clear – I’m not talking about social media
16. ‘Cloud’ + CRM = The Big Opportunity
• End of departmental silos – services, fundraising, marketing..
• One record per person – see the full picture, say right things
• Automated processes, workflows, approvals etc.

17. Key players in CRM space
• Key platforms include Salesforce (the one we use),
Microsoft Dynamics, Oracle, NetSuite
• Specialist not-for-profit offerings on Salesforce
(supporter360) and Dynamics (CRM4nfp) from Infoxchange
(developed in Australia)
• Pre-packaged offerings = lowest cost, lowest risk way to
benefit from CRM (Warning: own-book-talking!)
19. What about the future?
• Software market is changing rapidly, open cloud-based
platforms will dominate
• The same dynamics are at work just like mobile market –
small number of BIG platforms
• Think carefully before you sign up to a traditional client-
server system – will it be relevant some time very soon?
