2. What is it?
• The Descenso Internacional del Sella is a canoeing competition
that takes place on the first Sunday of August, in a section of
the river Sella, between the towns of Arriondas, where the exit is
located, and Ribadesella where the finish line is placed.
• The competition is organized by the spanish federation of
canoeing.
3. History
• In 1929, Dionisio de la Huerta,
Benigno Morán and Manés
Fernández went on an excursion.
They started at Piloña´s river and
finished the adventure in Infiesto.
The three friends made that
excursion in 2h 30min. That was
the origin of the Descenso
Internacional del Sella.
• The competition started in 1932
with the finish line in Ribadesella.

• Cadet
• Junior
These are the categories in which
the competition is divides. Men
and women can be mixed.
• Senior
• Veteran
• Centerian
In this category the age of the crew,
when added, should be at least 100 years.
7. What does it means?
• Many sportsmen and women have taken part in this
event year after year. What has brought them here?
The juicy money of the prizes, the publicity on the
media…
8. No, you won’t find these things here. The force that
moves them are the values of effort, solidarity and
fair play, the spirit of fraternity and brotherhood that
has inspired generation after generation of human
beings to practice and love sport.
9. • Local people have traditionally joined in the event,
cheering up the participants along the river and
offering them the best of the local food, traditions
and folklore, celebrating this way the importance of
the spirit that keeps this competition alive.
