Why Happy Employees Are 12% More Productive

Conventional wisdom holds that if only we pay workers enough, they'll be productive. There may be more to it,
though. Recent research hints there's a link between employees' happiness and their productivity at work. Some
companies are taking note—and already seeing the payoff.
A recent study by economists at the University of Warwick found that happiness led to a 12% spike in
productivity, while unhappy workers proved 10% less productive. As the research team put it, "We find that
human happiness has large and positive causal effects on productivity. Positive emotions appear to invigorate
human beings.“
Shawn Anchor, author of The Happiness Advantage, has found the brain works much better when a person is feeling
positive. At those times, individuals tend to be more creative and better at solving problems. And additional
research has shown that when workers are happy they're more effective collaborators working toward common
goals. As Anchor sees it, the incentive for organizations is clear-cut—"happiness leads to greater levels of profits"
for companies that take the right steps.

1. In the moment – as much as possible, be timely. Catch people doing exemplary work and acknowledge their efforts. Be
specific, descriptive and measured.
2. In context – recognition is most effective when it’s given in the context of a larger goal or business-results-focused
activity. An employee who lands a big contract by putting in the extra effort needs to know you noticed, and
understand the employee’s effort to ensure business success.
3. Appropriate in volume/scale – recognition should match effort and results, or it loses meaning.
4. Authentic, not automatic – a human touch makes recognition meaningful and impactful.
5. Tied to the employee’s perception of value – people know when they’re valued, and they should have a good idea of
their value to the organization. Treat employees as valued team members, not as numbers.

1. Who are you trying to impress? - Think about the audience for the dashboard. The most effective dashboards target a single type of
person or team and just display data specific to offer actionable insight.
2. Select the right type of dashboard - Common types include Operational (monitors nerve centers, typically require real-time data)
Strategic/Executive (provide the KPIs that executives track on a periodic, daily, weekly or monthly basis) and Analytical (Mix of
operational and strategic data)
3. Group data locally, use space wisely - Group by department or functional area (i.e. Product Inventory & Development,
Sales/Marketing, Finance Actuals & Forecast, People)
4. Make the data relevant to the audience - Ensure that you understand exactly who the intended audience is and the scope of their
requirements.
5. Don’t clutter your dashboard, present the most important metrics only - Cluttered displays deflect the focus from the important
messages.
6. How often does the data need to be refreshed? - Ensuring that your dashboard data is being refreshed at the right intervals saves
time during development. Real-time, daily, weekly, and monthly are the most common intervals.

Gamification & Motivation
According to Gamification by Design co-author Gabe Zichermann, “gamification is 75 percent psychology and 25 percent
technology.”
According to Professor B.J. Fogg, an experimental psychologist at Stanford University, there are three elements that must
converge in order for a change in behavior to occur: motivation, ability, and trigger. What’s most important is that all three
things have to happen at the same time.
Successful gamification tools work because they:
1. Give users the motivation to do something (the chance to win, receive rewards or gain recognition)
2. Give users the ability to carry out a task – by facilitating it, or breaking each task into bite-size chunks, increasing the
perceived capability for the user
3. Give the user a trigger or cue to complete the action
If all these conditions are met, gamification can change behavior, create motivation and keep employees engaged.

  • 3. Why Happy Employees Are 12% More Productive Fast Company I The Future of Work I July 22, 2015 Conventional wisdom holds that if only we pay workers enough, they'll be productive. There may be more to it, though. Recent research hints there's a link between employees' happiness and their productivity at work. Some companies are taking note—and already seeing the payoff. A recent study by economists at the University of Warwick found that happiness led to a 12% spike in productivity, while unhappy workers proved 10% less productive. As the research team put it, "We find that human happiness has large and positive causal effects on productivity. Positive emotions appear to invigorate human beings.“ Shawn Anchor, author of The Happiness Advantage, has found the brain works much better when a person is feeling positive. At those times, individuals tend to be more creative and better at solving problems. And additional research has shown that when workers are happy they're more effective collaborators working toward common goals. As Anchor sees it, the incentive for organizations is clear-cut—"happiness leads to greater levels of profits" for companies that take the right steps.

  • 10. Gamification & Motivation According to Gamification by Design co-author Gabe Zichermann, “gamification is 75 percent psychology and 25 percent technology.” According to Professor B.J. Fogg, an experimental psychologist at Stanford University, there are three elements that must converge in order for a change in behavior to occur: motivation, ability, and trigger. What’s most important is that all three things have to happen at the same time. Successful gamification tools work because they: 1. Give users the motivation to do something (the chance to win, receive rewards or gain recognition) 2. Give users the ability to carry out a task – by facilitating it, or breaking each task into bite-size chunks, increasing the perceived capability for the user 3.
