The Age of Sail returns
to Owen Sound
Owen Sound is the place to be this
August to experience majestic ships from
a bygone era. It’s one of the select ports on
The Tall Ships® 1812 Tour, presented by
Redpath Sugar.
Four tall ships sail into our city’s historic and
picturesque harbour for a three-day stay.
Board the Pride of Baltimore II (sponsored
by Investment Planning Council, Owen
Sound), Fair Jeanne (sponsored by The
Sydenham at Owen Sound), and Playfair for
unique tours. You can also sail away on
Liana’s Ransom (sponsored by Parrish &
Heimbecker Ltd.) for an unforgettable
excursion on Georgian Bay. Plus, historical
re-enactors will also take you back in time
adjacent to the ships.
Just north of the tall ships in the West
Harbour area, there are several free activities
including live music, children’s activities, a
Harbour Market, interpretative displays and
more. On the final day, take in the spectacular
Parade of Sail.
Inside read about the ships, what’s
happening harbourside and also find out
about all the other amazing things to do in
Owen Sound, once known as “the Chicago
of the North.” Enjoy yourself in the Scenic
City... where you want to play.

Owen Sound: The Community View
with Photographs from 1866 to 1957
The extraordinary photographs in this book have been
gathered from the basements and attics of Owen Sounders.
In most cases, they are informal snapshots taken by gen-
erations of amateur photographers to document people,
parades, houses and events of personal importance. A
remarkable glimpse into the lives of the people who lived
here during Owen Sound’s first century. $35.00
Owen Sound on the Georgian Bay:
Stories and Photographs from 1912 & 2012
100 years ago, a book was published to promote the bene-
fits of this town touted as “the first City upon the Georgian
Bay and one of the beauty spots of Canada.” Now we take
another look, comparing what was then to what we have
now with photographs, stories and statistics to show where
we were and what we have become. $24.95
Going North: The Story of Geraldine’s
Great Great Grandfather
and
Threads: Piecing Together the
Underground Railroad
These two children’s books written and illustrated in full
colour by local artist Bonita Johnson de Matteis describe
the stories of her great great grandfather, a runaway slave
on the Underground Railroad, and her grandmother, a
quilter who shared the stories and clues hidden in the
needlework to lead slaves to Owen Sound, the Northern
Terminus of the Underground Railroad. $14.95 each

are a summer 2013 must see!
This event would not be possible without
the generous support of all the sponsors as
well as the hard work of the many volunteers
involved. Thank you for your dedication in
making this event a success.

City of Owen Sound
On behalf of City Council, I would like to
take this opportunity to welcome you to the
City of Owen Sound’s Tall Ships® Owen
Sound event.
I am very excited that we were chosen as
one of 15 ports along Ontario’s Great Lakes
to host the Tall Ships® 1812 Tour this
summer.
This event features the Pride of Baltimore II,
which at nearly 48m (157’) in length, is one
of the largest sailing vessels to visit the Port
of Owen Sound since the Age of Sail. It’s also
the first American tall ship to be seen here in
many years.
Along with the tall ships, the event will
feature music, children’s activities, historic
dramatizations, food, crafts and much more.
It will be a weekend of lively entertainment
and fun for everyone!
To the participants, organizers, volunteers
and sponsors, THANK YOU for your
enthusiasm and participation as we continue
to support and encourage special events in
our region.
To our visitors, may your time in Owen
Sound be memorable, and we look forward
to your return in the future!

Message from the Ontario
Minister of Tourism, Culture
and Sport
On behalf of the Government of Ontario, I
am pleased to extend greetings to everyone
welcoming the tall ships into Owen Sound
harbour in commemoration of the War of
1812 Bicentennial.
The 2013 Tall Ships Celebration provides an
opportunity to reflect on an important part
of our history and gain a better
understanding of how it has shaped the
Ontario we know and love today. I am sure
these majestic tall ships from a bygone era
and planned local events will educate,
enlighten and entertain locals and visitors
alike as our heritage is re-discovered.
I am proud that the Government of Ontario
has provided funding to support War of 1812
bicentennial events throughout the province.
I would like to extend my thanks to the City
of Owen Sound and all of the partners,
organizers and volunteers who made this
commemorative event possible.
Please accept my best wishes for successful
and memorable bicentennial celebrations.

A reproduction of an 1812-era topsail
schooner privateer, it was commissioned in
1988 as a sailing memorial to her immediate
predecessor, the original Pride of Baltimore,
which sank in a storm. Over the years it has
visited over 200 ports in 40 countries in
North, South, and Central America, Europe,
and Asia It’s operated by two rotating
professional captains and a professional
crew of eleven.
Liana’s Ransom
Sponsored by Parrish & Heimbecker

History Comes Alive
Harbourside
Presented by the 1812 Secretariat,
Canadian Heritage
It’s 1813, a year since the Americans
declared war on the British and invaded
Canada; and the people’s mood is
changing. The Wharf, where Tall Ships come
and go, is where the lives of
travellers and town folk, friends and
enemies alike inter-connect. The men and
women of The Wharf cajole and
console each other through these tough
times, so expect the unexpected when
their personal lives and stories unfold and
intertwine with yours.
The Wharf: where folklore gets interactive
is an immersion theatre experience created
specifically “to engage, entertain and educate
visitors” about the issues and emotions that
prevailed during the War of 1812. It features
two major scenes with six character
vignettes that take place over the course of
two hours, repeated three times daily. Staged
on or next to a tall ship vessel, the drama
unfolds as historic characters interact and
improvise with visitors throughout the day.

TALL SHIPS Owen Sound 2013

  • 1.
  • 2. The Age of Sail returns to Owen Sound Owen Sound is the place to be this August to experience majestic ships from a bygone era. It’s one of the select ports on The Tall Ships® 1812 Tour, presented by Redpath Sugar. Four tall ships sail into our city’s historic and picturesque harbour for a three-day stay. Board the Pride of Baltimore II (sponsored by Investment Planning Council, Owen Sound), Fair Jeanne (sponsored by The Sydenham at Owen Sound), and Playfair for unique tours. You can also sail away on Liana’s Ransom (sponsored by Parrish & Heimbecker Ltd.) for an unforgettable excursion on Georgian Bay. Plus, historical re-enactors will also take you back in time adjacent to the ships. Just north of the tall ships in the West Harbour area, there are several free activities including live music, children’s activities, a Harbour Market, interpretative displays and more. On the final day, take in the spectacular Parade of Sail. Inside read about the ships, what’s happening harbourside and also find out about all the other amazing things to do in Owen Sound, once known as “the Chicago of the North.” Enjoy yourself in the Scenic City... where you want to play. • 3. Message from the Warden of Grey County On behalf of Grey County Council, I am pleased to welcome the Tall Ships® 1812 Tour to Owen Sound and the Georgian Triangle. We are proud of our rich marine heritage and are thrilled to host this unique community celebration. We invite you to “Colour It Your Way” as you explore the colourful tapestry of communities and stunning natural vistas that make Grey County the perfect setting for the Tall Ships® 1812 Tour showcase. Welcome and enjoy this magnificent event! Duncan McKinlay Message from Member of Parliament, Bruce-Grey-Owen Sound Welcome to the Owen Sound stop of the Tall Ships 1812 Tour. This festival is a time when friends and families can gather together to marvel at these amazing ships; replicas of authentic war ships that cruised the great lakes during the War of 1812. These festivities are a summer 2013 must see! This event would not be possible without the generous support of all the sponsors as well as the hard work of the many volunteers involved. Thank you for your dedication in making this event a success. Finally, I would like to congratulate the event`s organizers on a job well done. I hope that everyone in attendance enjoys the spectacles. Larry Miller Message from Member of Provincial Parliament, Bruce-Grey-Owen Sound As the Member of Provincial Parliament for Bruce-Grey-Owen Sound, I would like to take the opportunity to welcome everyone who is visiting our community. The City of Owen Sound, a proud port city is pleased to be one of 15 port stops on the tour route. Thank you to all of the sponsors, volunteers, and event organizers for all of your work and contributions to host this amazing opportunity for all of us to experience and enjoy. We hope you will find time to also visit the many other attractions, one-of-a-kind shops and excellent restaurants that our area has to offer while you are here. And of course, we welcome you back at any time. Bill Walker Greetings from the Mayor, City of Owen Sound On behalf of City Council, I would like to take this opportunity to welcome you to the City of Owen Sound’s Tall Ships® Owen Sound event. I am very excited that we were chosen as one of 15 ports along Ontario’s Great Lakes to host the Tall Ships® 1812 Tour this summer. This event features the Pride of Baltimore II, which at nearly 48m (157’) in length, is one of the largest sailing vessels to visit the Port of Owen Sound since the Age of Sail. It’s also the first American tall ship to be seen here in many years. Along with the tall ships, the event will feature music, children’s activities, historic dramatizations, food, crafts and much more. It will be a weekend of lively entertainment and fun for everyone! To the participants, organizers, volunteers and sponsors, THANK YOU for your enthusiasm and participation as we continue to support and encourage special events in our region. To our visitors, may your time in Owen Sound be memorable, and we look forward to your return in the future! Deborah Haswell Message from the Ontario Minister of Tourism, Culture and Sport On behalf of the Government of Ontario, I am pleased to extend greetings to everyone welcoming the tall ships into Owen Sound harbour in commemoration of the War of 1812 Bicentennial. The 2013 Tall Ships Celebration provides an opportunity to reflect on an important part of our history and gain a better understanding of how it has shaped the Ontario we know and love today. I am sure these majestic tall ships from a bygone era and planned local events will educate, enlighten and entertain locals and visitors alike as our heritage is re-discovered. I am proud that the Government of Ontario has provided funding to support War of 1812 bicentennial events throughout the province. I would like to extend my thanks to the City of Owen Sound and all of the partners, organizers and volunteers who made this commemorative event possible. Please accept my best wishes for successful and memorable bicentennial celebrations. Michael Chan
