to host the Tall Ships® 1812 Tour this

which at nearly 48m (157’) in length, is one
of the largest sailing vessels to visit the Port
of Owen Sound since the Age of Sail. It’s also
the first American tall ship to be seen here in
many years.
Along with the tall ships, the event will
feature music, children’s activities, historic
dramatizations, food, crafts and much more.
It will be a weekend of lively entertainment
and fun for everyone!

The ship, a 110 ft traditionally-rigged
brigantine of composite construction, is
based in Eastern Ontario. The keel was laid
in 1978 and the ship was launched in 1980.
It’s dedicated “to fostering leadership,
confidence, and self-reliance in young people
through sail-training.” The ship is operated
by the non-profit foundation Bytown
Brigantine.
Playfair
Commissioned in 1973 by Queen Elizabeth II
(the only Canadian ship to have that
honour), the two-masted square-rigged
brigantine was designed specifically for
youth sail training. Youth between the ages
of 13 and 18 become the working crew.
Playfair is owned and operated by Toronto
Brigantine Inc., a registered charity.

A reproduction of an 1812-era topsail
schooner privateer, it was commissioned in
1988 as a sailing memorial to her immediate
predecessor, the original Pride of Baltimore,
which sank in a storm. Over the years it has
visited over 200 ports in 40 countries in
North, South, and Central America, Europe,
and Asia It’s operated by two rotating
professional captains and a professional
crew of eleven.

Sailing out of Tortola, British Virgin Island,
the 85-foot, steel-hulled schooner built in
Houston, Texas was launched in 2002.
Originally designed as a Staysail schooner,
the ship (with capacity for 70 passengers)
was converted to a gaff rigged, square topsail
schooner. The ship’s design was influenced
by the schooners typical of the Gulf of
Mexico (shallow draft and broad beam).

History Comes Alive

Presented by the 1812 Secretariat,
Canadian Heritage
It’s 1813, a year since the Americans
declared war on the British and invaded
Canada; and the people’s mood is
changing. The Wharf, where Tall Ships come
and go, is where the lives of
travellers and town folk, friends and
enemies alike inter-connect. The men and
women of The Wharf cajole and
console each other through these tough
times, so expect the unexpected when
their personal lives and stories unfold and
intertwine with yours.
The Wharf: where folklore gets interactive
is an immersion theatre experience created
specifically “to engage, entertain and educate
visitors” about the issues and emotions that
prevailed during the War of 1812. It features
two major scenes with six character
vignettes that take place over the course of
two hours, repeated three times daily. Staged
on or next to a tall ship vessel, the drama
unfolds as historic characters interact and
improvise with visitors throughout the day.

A spectacular showcase of sails

Don’t miss this amazing event in Owen
Sound Harbour as the tall ships depart the
city together as part of a Parade of Sail. Along

procession into Georgian Bay. It’s a once in a
